Nothing in my childhood was more shocking than that episode where Big Bird cornholed Snufalufagus in that alley. His hair was all disheveled and that big trunk was just flopping around while Big Bird pounded away, slapping that furry ass and maniacally shouting, "Who are you gonna tell?" The Count in background jerking off to the whole scene is what really pushed it over the edge. "One stroke. Two strokes. Three strokes. Ahhhhhh...three strokes!"

So the New Yorker is a kids' magazine now?  Or could it possibly be that adults have a tendency to read into the subtext of children's stories in order to find or imbue extended meaning?

People who rage against the idea that Bert and Ernie can be seen as a gay couple are silly.

I used to argue a lot with the wife about this. They are fictional characters. They don't do ANYTHING when the cameras aren't rolling, so they can't have hidden lives.

Similar discussion was had for Holmes and Watson.

I beg to differ.  I worked at the CBC during a college intership.  They shot the Canadian version of Sesame street there.  When the cameras weren't rolling(and no kids were in the studio) those puppets would get up to some shenanigans.  Oh my, the language.  Sailors would blush.

So Bert. Now that your 'friend' is gone, you've come sniffing back here? Do you like Irony, Bert? It's an "I" word. Here's another "I" word: "I" turned you in. Hear that helicopter, Bert? It's coming for you. Even before you can get your little muppet hands on my neck, a SEAL team is going to be in this room. Whether you live or die is up to you. But if you chose to live, Bert, I can guarantee that in the very near future, you will wish you had died.

Here they are now, Bert. Careful fellows! Watch his hands! Get him. Get him good! Is he secure? Great. Now, I believe there was a reward mentioned? Oh thank you. Just doing my patriotic duty. Have a nice life, Bert. Life imprisonment, that it. See you guys! Go Navy! Thanks again.

(Picks up phone) Hey, BB it's me. Yep. They took him away. I got the money. Just you and me, my fine feathered friend. Oh I don't know. This place is dying for a makeover. Do you like marble? I'm thinking marble everywhere....

Oscar has some serious issues too, but seriously FFS leave innocent children's educational programming out of it.

Might as well say Animal has OCD, ADD and serious mental issues, while were applying conditions and illnesses to kid's shows, cuz that's what adults do best. Oh and bomb Emerald City, accuse the Big Bad wolf of domestic violence, murder and rape and what the hell....set the Enchanted Forest on fire and blame it on arson by some emo kid that lives in a castle. If you're going to wreck children's stories, might as wreck them all. Oh and, Dorothy? It was a setup. The "good" witch was really just a jealous whore. The "bad" witch is innocent and was the sucker in a gangland execution with Dorothy as the fall guy.

What absolute rubbish. It's disgraceful the way some people are. They have to project their own perverse fantasies onto fictional characters and do so by picking and choosing vague elements of story and character as a means to detect a subtext that only exists in their own addled brains. They are most certainly not a gay couple. That's completely absurd.

It's obvious to anyone who takes the time to look that Ernie is a paedophile and Bert molests pigeons. Completely and utterly separate from one another.

Of course he's the boss, and whatever he says is by definition true, but the idea that they can't be gay because they're young children is a bit insulting. Sexuality doesn't come out of nowhere when you hit puberty or when you start having sex.  It would be nice if all children could see people like them reflected in children's programming.
