Burger King's return to Paris could not have been better timing after a recent study revealed that sales of fast food had overtaken those of traditional sit-down restaurant dishes for the first time.

Ha ha! Soon the French will not longer be able to point and laugh at fat Americans, at least without wheezing a little bit. Get out the vinegar and mayonnaise for your Freedom Fries!

First the Japanese complaining about loan words, now the French will do their annual "America is killing our culture" rant. Somehow Snowden will get Russia on the ground in Syria and the Italians will send special forces to grab Amanda Knox. This business will get out if control.

The McDonald's in France is way better than the McDonald's in the United States. McDonald's realized that they needed to conform to French society a decade ago and they're reaping the benefits of that investment along with a stronger euro.

If Burger King has not studied trends in French eating at fast food places, they will close their stores in France within five years from opening. Burger King attempted once to expand into France in 1980 and left 17 years later. Eating fast food in France is different from the rest of Europe due in part to their culture and heritage. Their main competitors in France are McDonald's and Quick.

Tasted exactly the same to me. Except they serve espresso and not coffee (and beer).

I call BS. Until there is a corporate press release or an actual resto, I don't believe it. There are always rumors of a BK opening in France.

Man, isn't that sad?  Isn't a big part of (a tourist's perspective of) visiting a place such as France the appeal of sitting at a streetside cafe and taking in the atmosphere?
In the very least, I hope their Burger King goes back to using the microphone again.  I enjoy hearing my order repeated back to the fry-o-laters on a loud speaker.

I went there and I was like "WTF?? This is Burger King's logo. How can they legally steal it???"

Then I got home and did some research.....

When Burger King moved to expand its operations into Australia, it found that its business name was already trademarked by a takeaway food shop in Adelaide. As a result, Burger King provided the Australian franchisee, Jack Cowin, with a list of possible alternative names derived from pre-existing trademarks already registered by Burger King and its then corporate parent Pillsbury that could be used to name the Australian restaurants. Cowin selected the "Hungry Jack" brand name, one of Pillsbury's US pancake mixture products, and slightly changed the name to a possessive form by adding an apostrophe 's' forming the new name Hungry Jack's.

Yeah, I'm sure him choosing that name had nothing to do with his name being Jack.

Although the description does sell it a little bit...

A croque monsieur all round, while simplicity: two slices of melted Swiss cheese, a slice of ham than in a back and toasted bread. It does not take him more to be good.

and...

Her tight crumb, its thin crust and uniform color is obtained thanks to the use of quality flour. It is obtained by milling wheats harvested particularly in Beauce, Gatinaise, Ile de France, but also in the Rhône-Alpes, Auvergne, Burgundy and Midi-Pyrenees (for the 2010 harvest).

Ok; I'd try one for a dollar.

I was a little saddened to learn that fast food culture is replacing cafe culture in Paris but then I remembered last time I was over there I think 60 percent of what I ate was crepes sold by street vendors and cheap rotgut vino that still managed to be delicious.  So I guess I was part of the delicious problem myself.  Never did eat at an American fast food franchise over there but a McDonalds was the first thing I saw as I exited the Gare du Nord train station.  Could have knocked me over with a feather.

Let's keep it in perspective.  It was an immature response by some people, yes.  And while an all out war on all counts was excessive and unnecessary, the Iraq War was as much about France's (and Russia's) violation of the Oil for Food program as it was about ousting Saddam Hussein.  Bush was pissed about that and made sure everyone knew it.
So going back to the perspective thing, saying Freedom Fries is petty, violating an international agreement and illegally gaining millions in discounted oil while supporting a terrible dictator was worse, and all out war was terrible and unfortunate.
