If she were unrepentant, sure, but when someone regrets what they said years ago, why continue to hold it against them?  People are going way over the top on attacking her over her use of the n-word years ago.  Even Jessie Jackson has discussed ways to make amends with her and Al Sharpton has said she should only be judged on what is going on in court now, not something she said years ago.

If this many companies are cutting ties with her all at once, it's a sign that Paula's brand was not all that profitable to begin with.

If she was making them a lot of money, at least somebody would have kept her on the payroll. Of course, at this point, her brand's so toxic that the Lady and Sons might be the next entity to disassociate themselves from her.

well, the c-word is pretty offensive. I don't mind being called a cracker, nor do I find hillbilly, redneck, biatch, or many other words. The c word is pretty much the only word that invites an ass-beating from me.

Just for emphasis:

Hey, how come nobody makes a big deal when a black person says "cracker," but I lose all my endorsement deals just for calling black people.... Hold it right there, whitey. It boggles the mind to know that this question is still so fervently discussed in internet comment sections and in the stands of Ole Miss football games, and yet is one of the single most god damn ignorant questions that could ever be formulated by a white resident of the United States of America. The reason you're looking for, cracker, is "the history of the United States of America." Look it up. You can figure it out if you really, really try. I mean, lord almighty, you'd think that this whole discussion would have been laid to rest years ago just by Chris Rock routines alone, but no. farking whiny crackers will not stop whining like little babies no matter how farking good they have it.

We also don't have a "White History Month" because THE VAST MAJORITY OF HISTORY WE'RE TAUGHT IS ALREADY WHITE HISTORY.

poot_rootbeer: Let us not ask whether she deserves a total fall from grace for her behavior.  Let us ask whether she ever deserved a state of grace to begin with.

No kidding.

I'm a lot less worried about the public piling-on of a pseudo-repentant racist butter pusher... than I am depressed that she had so many endorsements in the first place.

Anthony Bourdain had her character pegged.

That she thinks "I was robbed by a black guy" and "black guys say it" are mitigating factors in her use of a racial slur is hardly surprising. And the whole "plantation wedding" thing... ew. Even if the whole Southern fantasy/Margaret Mitchell version of reconstruction has made that type of event a regular occurrence in the South, it's no excuse.

Personally I find her offensive for encouraging people to take already unhealthy food and make it massively unhealthy, equating "working people" food with massively unhealthy food, and taking money for endorsing a company's expensive medical treatment of a condition which is caused by people consuming her massively unhealthy food.

That she's experiencing a downfall is just fine with me. That she's also a pseudo-repentant racist is just the butter on the fried snickers on the icing on the cake.

Sister Mary Farker: If you read the actual complaint filed in the lawsuit, you'll see that the problem with Paula Deen isn't about some indiscreet or off-color language she used once upon a time. It's not about someone getting their feelings hurt. Go ahead and defend her and her brother and their company after you've done the reading. The deposition was mild compared to this, and it didn't contradict anything in the lawsuit.

Wow.

Brilliant.

Everyone's talking about how she said the N-Word, when the entire lawsuit is about violent sexual harassment and abuse.

Why aren't people going on about the "Jew girl" and "almost a Jew" comments directed at the plaintiff?

Remember when Toyota had trouble with random wild accelerations that turned out to be mass hysteria and there was nothing behind the problem outside of a few overly susceptible people.

Paula Deen's a similar victim. She's a white southern housefrau over 60. Of course she's going to be a little racist at heart, even if she's not actively being racist. Everyone knew that from day one. She didn't get up on any stage and shout the words, but everyone is acting like she did. Simple mass hysteria of the "don't want to get any racism on me" variety.

Oh, and nothing that has been on QVC is worth having. Trust me on that.

Yeah, I've got to say; I find this more telling than anything else. Companies have gone to some pretty impressive lengths to hold onto people who did far worse than what she did, if they were popular enough to be deemed worth that risk. Some companies have taken longer than others to drop her, but even the ones who haven't dropped her don't seem to be putting any effort into defending her.

This is someone who crashed and burned some time ago. Companies are willing to incur some risk to hold out for a potential comeback, but they'll only take so much, and it sounds like where Deen is concerned, their patience has run out.

You answered your own question.

If she'd say "lazy welfare queen" she'd be fine.

This is about Paula Deen's businesses having systematic sexual harassment of female employees at the hands of her brother and other men employed under her.  She's the one trying to make it all about her getting abused for admitting she used a racial slur.

Eh, I mildly disagree. I think Paula was still bringing a little something to the table. The problem she has is that her value's replacable. Her name had some decent recognition, and she could provide a bit of market differentiation.

The problem she had is really simple: there's a very, very limited number of items where the name "Paula Deen" brings demonstrably more value than, say, "Ina Garten" or "Rachel Ray". For something like cookware, I'd be more likely to think Ina's stuff was a bit fancier and higher quality, simply because of the snob appeal of her persona.

Paula's made a good career out of saying "Hey, ya-awl, let's have some butter", but it's hard to market Southern comfort food as a discriminator in household goods. As long as her persona was the friendly old lady from Georgia, she was fine, because while she may not have brought that much of a unique market presence, she also didn't lose you anything. But as soon as there was a hint of a flaw in her brand, it made perfect business sense to let her go and find a new chef.

The average customer might prefer a brand with a celebrity chef endorsement, but they're most likely not going to split hairs between Paula Deen, Mario Batali, or Bobby Flay. They just want someone they've heard of to endorse their 6-quart sauce pot from Target.

Well, in my case, because I don't care enough to find out the facts so I'm just going by whatever tidbits I pick up as time goes by.

I didn't like her anyway. She seems like a viciously self-serving and utterly self-important coont who just puts on her stupid act to make herself big bucks. But what really pisses me off is that she then runs around saying stupid shiat like she doesn't understand why anybody wouldn't like her or she doesn't understand why people look down on her cooking or she doesn't understand what the problem is with going from pushing fatty garbage on TV to pushing diabetes drugs.

So I'm just enjoying watching the collapse. Or, more specifically, I'm enjoying watching all the fat rednecks that think she's a cooking goddess blow their shiat up all over twitter and facebook as she collapses.

Exactly WHY she's falling apart is sort of immaterial as far as I'm concerned.
