"They cross the ethical line that has been agreed by government around the world that we should not genetically alter human beings," he said in an emailed statement.

This is untrue both literally and in the spirit of the words, by the way.  The practice is legally permitted and even encouraged in the UK for specifically this purpose (the treatment of genetic diseases) subject to the usual medical research oversight.  The US doesn't even have any federal laws regarding germline modification at all, there's just an advisory committee on genetics attached to the NIH that consults in a non-binding fashion with the FDA, which applies the same approval standards as for everything else in medicine.

Looking it up, the countries that outright ban genetic research of this kind are:
South Africa
Switzerland (using, amusingly, explicitly racist language about purity)
Israel (a temporary provision to work out the surrounding law that expires in a couple years)
Germany (allows experimentation, but not implantation)
Canada
Australia

So... sure, those are "countries around the world", technically, but when the US, the UK, France, China, India, Japan, South Korea, etc are all actively pursuing this technology for medical purposes and have governments encouraging or even funding it, and everyone outside the above list is pretty much fine with it, don't farking pretend you've got some sort of moral consensus going.  Like 99% of the scientific powers by population are totally for this.

A three parent embryo.

In my imagination it would involve me having sex withe two beautiful, ovulating women. Then giving them both a spin through the Large Hadron Collider, with sexy space bikinis on.

In reality though, it's prob just me jerking into a cup and the women getting egg extractions. They are taking all the fun out if it. Just like Demolition Man predicted.

Even if this DOES lead to designer babies, I don't understand the problem... So rich people are able to design babies that look a certain way and have certain traits and poor people have to have regular babies? Maybe it's unfair, but seriously, the whole world is unfair. It sounds like the only people who are upset about this are people who are jealous they won't be able to afford it themselves...

Not in the good old socialist UK. This is NHS research, for NHS patients.

It's the slippery slope argument. Which in the case of most things is just a bunch of fantastical gesticulating. Which may apply in this case as well.

But something like Brave New World does give you concerns to think about.

If it's just a focus on eliminating genetic abnormalities and diseases then people would have no problem. It's the enhancement possibilities that are going to be challenging to regulate and accept.

FTFA:
Critics said the technique was ethically suspect and would eventually lead to a eugenic 'designer baby' market.

Because the ethical thing to do would be to force two people who love each other and want to have kids of their own to have kids with a 96% chance of being dead by 3 years of age, amirite?

I don't understand how this is even any business of the government. If people want to make 4-assed babies, that is their business.

I cannot ethically dissuade changing the genetics during IVF expecially for known genetic illnesses but morally I just cannot imagine going through that level of work just so you can propigate your genes when at the end of the day you really want is to raise a child as a family.  There are enough kids out there that need families... it just feels wrong to spend untold money when you can give them a home.  Too each their own.

/spent many nights arguing this with the wife when deciding the level of fertility treatments we were willing to go through.
//got lucky with having hormone treatments aid the natural process.

Her: hey, me and my friend over there were wondering if you'd be interested in a 3-way
You: no thanks. I mean, thanks for the offer, but I'm watching my health and it's really unhealthy, and I know I'd wake up and regret it in the morning. Especially when the burning sensation starts.

I will admit.  It would be a once a month visit for me.  After we ate, headed to the Reds HOF.  I was in there for no more than 10 minutes when the chili came knockin'.  Spent more time in the shiatter than I did walking around the HOF.
