robsul82: Rwa2play: Killer Cars: VvonderJesus: Watching Simmons after the trade went down last night was the best part of the draft.

The complaints about him, especially as a writer (over-reliance on making inane pop culture references and analogies, etc) are totally legit....yet at the same, he is morphing into a decent commentator; at least by ESPN's incredibly low standards.

About that, I honestly don't care if he makes pop culture references and analogies so long as he gets his point across.  Frankly, his writing is a lot better than what I've read from most other columinsts (looking at you Mike Lupica~!) these days.

At least he's willing to call out Doc's shifting stories.  I just wonder where the articles and podcasts are something bad happens to his teams, he doesn't seem to do them much anymore.

IIRC there is an archives of his older podcasts.  I especially enjoy the one where he and Aaron Schatz(sp) practically give no chance to the Giants before Super Bowl XXII.   Hilarious in hindsight.

He doesnt have one up yet today?  I figured him and Jalen would have done one after the draft last night.

I am new to Simmons (my brother has been trying to get me to read him for a decade) but I will forever be on his side because of the obit he wrote for Macho Man (perfectly capturing what it is to be an adult wrestling fan), his podcast with Scal about the Celtics teams I loved, and his passion for what he does.  I never feel like he is mailing it in.

Nope, nothing yet.  Nothing about Hernandez short of a tweet a day or two ago.  The Macho Man article was really good, though.

ESPN put him in timeout for the weekend.

Hah, wouldn't be surprised if they did.

And people hate on his Top 100 Free Agent article.  I thought that it was interesting.  People dont like the NBA and Bill has started to focus most of his attention on the NBA, turning people off to his writing.  That is what Grantland is for, the rest of the topics.

Pretty much~!  If he's compelled to write something other than basketball he'll do it.  He's still a Red Sox and Pats fan; esp. during football season he dives headlong into the Pats.

Yup.  Might be cheaper to go to the games thought which will be nice.
Reggie Evans no longer part of the trade, it is Brooks and Kris Joseph now.

Cheaper would be pretty cool, that is true.

And yeah, I'd rather have Evans than Humphries but I guess Humphries only has one year left (ie expiring) so . . . well . . . I'd still rather have Evans but maybe Humphries can be a beastly rebounder like he was when he got his current deal.

Absolutely, especially offensive ones since they won't be able to hit a shot.  Hmmm. . . I expected that last year was a drop off but the numbers do pan out.  Isn't he an awful defender though?

Though I do hope Lee gets back to his averages, he should be a decent player.

What do you want to hear about Hernandez, there is no room to have a discussion on it. It is a live investigation of a murder, you can't joke about that. Bill Barnwell wrote on Grantland about how it effects the Pats. Unless you want some lame story about Tebow replacing Hernandez or how the warning signs were there before the draft.

Hernandez isn't entirely a sports story and he isn't culturally transcendent like OJ. Simmons hasn't commented because he has nothing interesting or relevant to say (take note Peter King) and the same people that bash him for his homerism criticise him for his restraint for not commenting. Where is his How About Those Red Sox article although that might be coming in a week when it is the only major sport on the go. Plus lets get Jacko on the podcast and get tore into the Yankees and the whole Aroid mess.

Simmons found out Rivers' motivations for leaving and got called on the carpet for it.  Screw Rivers; if his kid wants to talk about "loyality" how about Doc honoring the terms of the contract he signed with the Celtics two years ago?

The Bobcats and the Sixers could be historically bad this year.

2013-06-28 02:05:47 PM

ShadezofDis: Overall a great deal for the Cs, I'm not buying that they could have gotten more and I'm ok with the past two seasons (though this year was rough.)  I think the 2014 pick is likely to be a late first rounder but the 2016 (and I think they have the option of switching places with the Nets in the 2015 draft, though that might be the 2017 draft) and the 2018 might just be great picks.  KG and Pierce only have a couple mid-high level years left (seems that way anyhow) and Joe Johnson already seems like an old man.  Unless the Nets bring in some free agents for 2016/2018 then I can see those picks being pretty decent.

As for taking back Wallace, we had to give a bit and the money had to match, so it doesn't break my heart or anything.

/They're gonna be rough to watch though.
//The Nets should be good next year.

I think this deal is a steal for Brooklyn.

Hump and Pierce both have expiring contracts; Pierce's is for an extra $3 million but he's a vastly better player. Why not just let Pierce's contract run? The other big player component is basically Garnett (12 million per for 2 years) for Wallace (10 million per for 3 years). Garnett is the better player, and while his per year salary is a little higher Wallace's deal has that extra year. $5 million in short term cap relief for a team that's $34 million over the cap doesn't exactly provide the flexibility the C's are allegedly seeking. It does have the "benefit" of making their team worse and improving their chance at a high 2014 pick.

The latter two picks are a crapshoot. There is no way to know what the '18 pick will look like - the Nets don't have a single player under contract for that year - and there's no reason to think that the '16 pick will be a high lottery pick: the only ugly contract the Nets are locked into for that year is Joe Johnson.

Gunny Highway: I dont understand people down playing the first round draft picks.  I am thrilled with it.

For me it's because the '14 pick is going to be in the high 20's, the '16 pick is unlikely to be a lottery pick and the '18 pick is remote enough that it is a total gamble. I understand the Celtics' reasoning though; without the trade they'll get only the cap space when PP & KG's deal's run - the trade is basically these three picks and the chance to stumble into a high '14 pick in exchange for taking the 3rd year of Wallace's deal.

2013-06-28 02:41:05 PM

Rwa2play: Oh I agree with that, but the whole "Oh I never wanted out of Boston" speech by Doc was so transparent it was disgusting.

Eh, that's fair.  I think he was willing to stay but wasn't opposed to doing something else.  Basically I see it as an exploration of possibilities that went beyond exploration and then actually happened, to a few peoples surprise (but it was the Clips, so of course they went for it, plus the whole CP thing) the Clips were willing to part with a first rounder.

Gunny Highway: The Bobcats and the Sixers could be historically bad this year.

Well, on the plus side, if the Bobcats are trying to suck then they might just win 40 games this year.

Boston doesn't have much to attract free agents, even if they have the cap space.  The picks, while a crap shoot, are still an actual asset and might be able to be included in a trade or they may luck out and get some quality players.  Further, I don't exactly see how the '16 and '18 pick can be anything but crap shoots, we know the russian is willing to spend but with the cap and the floor there isn't a huge amount that can be done (outside of trades and the like.)

2013-06-28 04:50:44 PM

InmanRoshi: Lost Thought 00: I don't understand why the Celtics take on Wallace if they are rebuilding. That contract is an albatross

And what's going to be almost 3 sure fire non-lottery picks.

Just looks like they didn't like a long drawn out PR nightmare of shipping off two legends like KG and Pierce, so they just wanted to get it all over with at once for whatever they could get and move on.

The 2014 pick will be non-lottery, but it wouldn't surprise me if the 2016 or 2018 picks end up in the lotto. KG and Pierce will likely be retired then, and Joe Johnson's production has fallen off dramatically. They'll really be riding Deron and Lopez and whatever supporting cast they can cobble together to avoid the lotto.
