I'm sorry to say I'm a resident of this state.

Once a slave state, always a slave state.

In six months: Crime has reached an all time high in North Carolina as tens of thousands of out of work North Carolinians take to robbing those with jobs.

In eight months: Tax paying North Carolinians demand more police protection from the hordes of thieving criminals.

In ten months: Hundreds of local politicians are tossed after raising taxes to pay for increased police forces and crime prevention.

Ship they to NYC or California.

They'd better increase security at the Governer's mansion, because things are gonna go all World War Z when the poor revolt.

That state has lost its freaking mind.

Unfortunately, it has a lot of company with other Republican led states such as Wisconsin, Kansas, etc, etc.

Them not they.

So people can't make their mortgage payments and get forclosed.  Which makes the economy worse.  Which causes more unemployment.  I'm not sure the NC legislature followed the domino trail far enough.

The first domino is "hurt poor people." They're Republicans, they don't care about the rest of the domino trail.

Lots of poor, unemployed and/or underemployed rednecks/teabaggers in this state... and they voted in these politicians.

So what's the deal, they are running too big of a debt to qualify for the federal payments?

Insaniteus: They'd better increase security at the Governer's mansion, because things are gonna go all World War Z when the poor revolt.

Some of those unemployed will use guns to commit suicide; others may turn to political assassination. It seems unlikely the GOP will dare to endorse adding "currently employed" to the criteria for a background check for buying a gun, regardless.
Academically, I'm curious what the empirical effects of this social laboratory experiment will be.

2013-06-28 10:16:11 AM
So let me get this straight. The Feds hand over free money for unemployment if you meet a modicum of benefits as a state. Kinda like matching funds?

And NC decided to give up this free money why? So it can pay back debt to the Feds from the Great Depression? If they've gone this long it doesn't strike me as that urgent.

Don't worry, it will still be the liberals fault.  The party of personal responsibility always like to point out how nothing bad is ever their fault.

That's it man!  I am moving to NC!

What is the thought process here?

a. If you dont have a job. go be poor someplace else?
or
b. You will do whatever we say and take whatever we feel like paying you?

The only people that will ever work in your state will be driving across the state line...

^^This

When I moved up here from Charleston, SC in 2008, I was sad to leave the place where I was born and raised, but I thought that there would be at least one upside in that I was moving to a state that was a bit more liberal.

How's that workin out for ya me?

The real problem is that unemployment insurance portion to pay the debt was set to go up form $42 dollars an employee to $63 per employee.  So they would now be paying $62 per employee per year.  If you have 1000 employees, that is an increase of $21,000 per year.   Now you see the problem i'm sure.   That there is a good pocket money for a weekend in Vegas.

I bet you two hate capitalism.

That is probably the unspoken intention, same as in Kansas. Make it so difficult for the poor to survive, that they move to another (likely blue) state.

Step 3 is always Profit

I would love to hear the phone conversation between an angry, unemployed NC "small gubmint" Republican and the government worker who has to explain to him why his unemployment check didn't come.

It's well known that the poor have an easy time with mobility, and don't just get stuck where they're at.

Our derptard legislators believe that unemployment benefits cause unemployment; there's a quote in TFA to that effect.

In other news, we should cut disaster relief because it just encourages tornado victims to have more tornadoes.

No, they enacted a new law that violated federal requirements for aid.

This bill was supposedly drafted by the NC Chamber of Commerce (aka ALEC). This may just be the "test case" for other states to follow. I hope I'm wrong about this, but the recent political climate makes me think I am not.

Bastards.

I cant wait for the dawning realization the redneck trash of the state that voted for those cretins will experience as they realize that all this 'welfare' they have been trying to get rid of because it goes to 'teh nigras' and 'messicans' actually include money THEY were getting too.

2013-06-28 10:59:05 AM
Fast forward a few months, and the likely questions coming from NC will be "Why is our state economy not doing better" and "Why has crime risen?"

Do they really, REALLY think that people are sitting on those extended UI benefits instead of looking for work?

2013-06-28 10:59:20 AM
I can't wait until NC finds out that a portion of the people on unemployment are white tea party patriots.

Republicans can go suck a big fat hairy donkey cock.

Also, this law was basically written by the NC Chamber of Commerce collective and pushed through the lobby to get voted on.

"The legislation was based on a plan released last year by the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce, and Chamber lobbyists and employer representatives worked with Republican lawmakers, who have controlling majorities in the legislature, to write the bill.  It was put on a fast track at the opening of the 2013 legislative session - without public hearings or comment, and with no input from advocates for unemployed workers, employees or labor groups. "

At what point do we rebuild the government of the people, by the people, for the people.

Yeah here is a link explaining how the NC CoC did just that...

Rixel: Quite a race to the bottom you all are having down south!  It's exciting!

Sad thing is that they are dragging the rest of the country down with them.  Companies want to move their to take advantage of the low tax rates and the right to work laws thereby making northern states have to lower corporate taxes and introduce right to work legislation to compete.  Capitalism is destroying the country, make no mistake about it.

2013-06-28 11:21:37 AM
So states competing for business is 'destroying capitalism'?

2013-06-28 11:28:23 AM

Tannhauser: So states competing for business is 'destroying capitalism'?

No, states racing to the bottom and catering to the every whim of business is why capitalism is destroying the country (not destroying capitalism as you stated, though i would love to see capitalism destroyed).  They are also trampling over the rights of workers to form unions (please see the first amendment, freedom of association).  For instance, when the Employee Free Choice Act (you might have to do a little research for yourself, sorry) was being debated in congress republicans called it the "greatest threat to democracy."  Why? Because it made it easier to form unions.  God forbid we actually let people collectively bargain and force businesses to pay a living wage, that would just be unAmerican.

Tannhauser: So states competing for business is 'destroying capitalism'?

I figure you are a troll, but am going to respond.

How does starving people and cutting their unemployment help bring business to the state again?

Oh a starved populace looking to work for food, perhaps they should go to China instead of making China in NC.

Hell I thought the movie The Campaign was just a joke, but apparently the idea of making parts of the US in China is really their goal.

2013-06-28 11:33:35 AM
U.S. Congress: "Let's help states with unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed. But to make sure they don't take advantage, we'll set some minimal requirements. No one would be so stupid as to throw away all this federal money that would help their constituents."

North Dakota Legislature: "Challenge accepted."

In the Republican mind, it's more fun to just watch the dominos fall. It's like that asshole who watches you make an elaborate trail and "accidentally" bumps into one of them.

meat0918: Do they really, REALLY think that people are sitting on those extended UI benefits instead of looking for work?

Yes.  They do.  Everyone does.  When you really analyze and think about the conversations in Fark threads, it's clear that even Democrats / progressives / liberals believe that too, although they tend to phrase it differently.  Everybody wants to piss on people perceived as weak; it's the American way.
