"He said: 'The utility company is obliged to remediate the road surface.

'The utility companies are required to repaint any markings they alter when they dig up the road.

'They are only obliged to redo the letter not the whole word.'"

This. Seriously. Not a blunder.

FTA:

'The utility companies are required to repaint any markings they alter when they dig up the road.
'They are only obliged to redo the letter not the whole word.'

So why does the article keep referring to it as a mistake?  It is not the utility company's job to repaint the entire word, only the part they destroy in digging up the road.

Totally read that as 'women' that repainted the road.

Works either way.

Reminds me of the manholes you sometimes see lazily replaced so that the road markings don't line up anymore.  Which of course later get painted over again incorrectly when the painting crew comes along.

Even though it wasn't their responsibility to re-paint the whole word, it would be nice to see some common sense rule every once in a while.

All this over a union work order?  The workers did exactly what they were told, because getting fired for going above and beyond doesn't look any better on the resume than getting fired for being lazy.  Seriously, how many job interviewers would believe you got fired for doing too much work and getting overtime for it?

/Yes, I can be written up and could be fired for staying 8 minutes over.
//Can also be written up for working through a lunch

Cold_Sassy: Reminds me of the old pic of the opossum with the double-yellow line...

Houston, Missouri weekly "newspaper", circa 1991 had a front page article about a recent local armadillo sighting (big news at the time). Article featured a pic of said beastie. On the centerline of the road. Dead. Striper truck had painted right over it within the last day.
