Migaloo (an Aboriginal word that translates to "white fella")

Somehow, I feel this translation isn't exactly accurate.

Moby Dick was a sperm whale, not a humpback.

LordJiro: Moby Dick was a sperm whale, not a humpback.

He also didn't have a stupid name like Migaloo.

Does he fantail a little curious before he goes down ? And does he have a curious spout, all bushy ? And he has one, two, three, oh ! , many irons in his hide, all twistee- twix like a corckscrew ?

Death and devils men ! Y've seen him; it's Moby Dick !

/// one of my favorites as a young man.

Talk not to me of blasphemy, man; I'd strike the sun if it insulted me.

One of the all-time great movies.

One of the all-time great movies.

One of the all time great works of film or literature !

// The critics panned Gregory Peck as Ahab, saying he was too handsome to play the role. He put the fear of god in me as a little boy. I've always felt he was perfect for the role; John Huston knew what he was doing. Peck looks like he was born to be a sailor.

Yeah, both.

Peck was also criticized for "over acting" as Ahab, but if there has ever been a role that required an actor to play it over the top, it's that role.

Another thing that gets short-shrift is the cinematography.  They washed out the color on purpose, so it didn't look like most color films of the time, which tended towards bright, almost cartoon-y colors.  The colors in Moby Dick are muted, and they match the overall tone of the film.

diity: To me Richard Basehart was the weakest link in the movie. His Ishmael is mediocre at best. My mom  and dad thought Leo Genn as Queequeg was perfect, though I really liked the way he was portrayed as a Maori in the version with Patrick Stewart.

Actually, Leo Genn played Starbuck (and very well), and Friedrich von Ledebur  played Queequeg.  Both did pretty much perfect jobs, though, as did pretty much everyone else except for Basehart.

I do have to say, though, that the definitive screen version is this one:
