One of my neighbors raises Ridgebacks and keeps tempting me with puppies and I keep saying "NO,NO,NO" and won't even look at the litters. I keep telling myself "You have one cat and one dog and that's all you can afford right now". (I am such a sucker for the cute puppy face) If they were having a problem with finding a home for a puppy I would take one but they are a pretty rare breed in my town so...

Shadow was 6 weeks old when she climbed over three puppies and over a chicken wire fence to run over and climb up my legs to sit in my lap, she was with me twelve years. I got Elsa on purpose from the Humane Society, she was with me 13 years.
grmmmie.smugmug.com
Baby walked up my driveway starved and beaten she was between 2 and 3 when she moved in, she was with me 18 years.
grmmmie.smugmug.com
Jack was a phone call from my Vet. He was 2 years old and had been abused and they were having trouble placing him. Jack and I clicked from day one and he got along with Baby, He has been with me for 10 years so far.
grmmmie.smugmug.com
And finally Gremie the only cat anyone in my family has ever owned. He was one of the office cats where I worked.
he spent most of his day in my office and would tell me about his nights when I got to work in the morning. A new owner decided to get rid of the cats.So Gremie came home with me and things worked out. 6 years so far.
grmmmie.smugmug.com

So there is a very good reason I don't even look at puppies and kittens. They keep following me home.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: Oh, noes! Moo Moo Kitty, my little stray I've been feeding and trying to befriend enough to get in the house was just attacked by one of the neighbor cats. There was this horrible screeching and it wasn't my music so I went running and my mom was banging on the window yelling "NEI!" and poor Little Moo was pinned by grey kitty! The grey kitty ran off and so did Little Moo, but she went right over the fence into the woods while he bailed over the fence toward his place. I can't find Little Moo anywhere. She left a terror pee puddle on the porch, so she's probably hiding. I am SO MAD at that grey kitty. It has a home and because I have food and fresh water out for Little Moo, it comes over here. No more "shoo kitty, go home" from me. I just got back in, retrieved a Super Soaker and have it loaded with a mix of apple cider vinegar and water. THAT should deter the jerk.
I'm worried for Little Moo, though. I even checked the cubbies the ferals like to hang out in - no sign of her. PLEASE COME BACK, LITTLE MOO!

Go use the Super Soaker on the so-called "owners" of the grey kitty, and then reload. Hey, what goes around, comes around.

RadicalEd: Ivan Catman went to vet today again. I decided since I have a job now that I'd get his heart test done. It's something I should do about every 6 months or so to check his heart levels since he has a heart murmur.
Well it was supposed to be a 10-15 min visit just to get some blood drawn. Of course, it turned into 45+ since he fought tooth and nail not to have anything done to him. They couldn't get the blood from the jugular (which is where they said they normally do a blood draw), so they tried his front legs. No go because he fought so hard. So they tried his back legs, which apparently is very sensitive. They finally managed to get blood out of one of them, but he'll be bruised for a day or two at all the different spots where they tried to get blood. Not only that, but he managed to knock over rubbing alcohol and peroxide all over his back legs while struggling. He's also missing a bit of fur from his neck from where the technicians were grabbing his scruff trying to hold him still.

I was going to respond to your post to point out that a heart murmur is not always a big deal (Dragon has one, and so did Merlin - as do I, my mother, my niece - I get a kick out of telling the vet it runs in the family) but I got distracted by your description of the attempted blood draw. While I understand that cats can be difficult, I would have serious doubts about a fully staffed veterinary hospital that would have to subject a cat (or any animal) to at least 5 attempts (from your description) to obtain a blood sample - and ripping out fur from scruffing? If that happened to me, I would run like hell to find another more competent vet. JMHO, but damn, while the white boy hates the vet with a passion, I would NEVER subject him to that.
And WTH was he anywhere near rubbing alcohol and peroxide when they must have realized he was being difficult?

/ Please do not misunderstand me, I appreciate that you are doing your best to take care of Ivan, and my comments are NOT meant as criticism, I'm just expressing my opinion. I hope his tests come back just fine and he will not have to go through that again anytime soon.

Yes, it was intentional. I generally try to ignore the a**holes, but after all that, I couldn't help myself. And it's true...I really DO like rabbit. :D

After I moved to NJ, I had a warren of rabbits who lived under a wisteria bush on my front lawn, and when it got to the point that they would actually come within a foot of me and wiggle their ears when I got home, I gave up eating rabbit. Also lost my taste for venison when the deer discovered my apple trees and would sleep on my back deck.

Cat For Adoption - Please Help - DC/VA/MD- Can Travel (Re-Post)

i.imgur.com

Hi - I hate to post this in a Caturday thread and apologies for the re-post from last week but we have a cat that we need a new home for. The cat in question is one of the best cats in the world and we are sure whoever adopts her will be thrilled to have her. She's the sweetest and lowest maintenance cat I've ever seen. She's a fluffy marshmallow cat that loves cuddles and cheap cat food.

Question: Why is one of the best cats in the world up for adoption?
Answer: We have three cats - Momma-Cat, Beast-Cat and Douche-Cat. We adopted them as a package deal in Dubai when some asshole tried to drown some kittens outside our apartment; one morning we woke up to the sound of Momma-Cat screaming over the bucket her kittens were in. A quick fishing trip later we were the proud owners of two kittens and a momma cat. They all got on great until two years ago when we took the momma cat to get her teeth cleaned - from the moment she got home she has been in a fight with one of her kittens, Beast-Cat (now grown up into a 16 pound monster twice his momma's size). We have tried everything but with no luck and have come to the conclusion we need to find her a new home as the regular ass-kickings she's getting are taking their toll on her.

Question: Why is she up for adoption now and not a year ago?
Answer: We recently had a baby, and since then are no longer able to give the cats, who are separated in different parts of the house most of the time, the attention they need. Further - a couple of times they have gotten in fights near the baby and it's a risk we can't continue to take.

Question: Why isn't Beast-Cat up for adoption instead?
Answer: Beast-Cat and Douche-Cat are best buds. They are highly energetic and extremely destructive. They have a great time wrestling with each other and get on well. Beast-Cat doesn't do well on his own and any adoption with him would require a package deal with Douche-Cat. Douche-Cat is a douche and takes a lot of getting used to, we knew him as a kitten which makes it easier.

Question: Why not put her in a Cat Shelter?
Answer: She does not do well in cages and living in one would be a strain on her that we could not inflict on her, and would also make it hard to find someone to adopt her as they would not see her at her best.

Question: Have you tried X?
Answer: Yes

Question: Is she house trained?
Answer: Yes. She is also vaccinated.

Question: In the photo she looks like she's at the Vet - is she dying?
Answer: No - She was losing patches of hair due to over-cleaning herself out of anxiety due daily ass-kicking by Beast-Cat. She is recovered now as we have completely separated them into different parts of the house, a solution that is not possible in the long term as it basically involves locking her in the bedroom in the attic, which isn't fair on her and she deserves a home where she can get the love and attention she deserves.

Question: What is the return policy?
Answer: Our goal is to find her a new home where she will be happy, not just dump her. If the adoption does not work we will be happy to take her back and try to re-home her elsewhere.

That is so adorable!

That cat knows what he's doing, though. You can run, QJ, but you can't hide! LOL.

I just came back in from my ritual sacrifice of the fatted stogie (cigar), and he was just the most attention
craving cat I've ever seen! I can hold my hand out, palm up, a foot above the porch floor, and he comes over
and stand up on his hind legs and lays his head in the palm of my hand. This cat has a turbocharged purring
motor with a nitrous boost! He's loud!

Later, he would come over and use his front legs to "climb" up to my hand sitting my my lap and nudge it
trying to get pettin' and scritches. He purrs and trills and rubs his face all over my pants leg and shoes.

I think I may have created a monster.

Invisible Oranges: Olson's Scandinavian Deli

I have never gone. Mom is Norwegian, I'm pure California, born, raised and praised. I dig on Mexican food. I think it's a requirement or they kick you out of the entire state. I do like some Nordic food, but I do it my way. I also make a pretty darn good lefse, because I leave out the sugar, like a good little Heathen.

I haven't seen a bread man in ages, but they were like the ice cream man, but with bread, eggs, milk, little grab bags for the kids - some even had beer, though I don't think they were supposed to. Like a mobile ultra mini mart. The drive through dairy is about the same thing, but you go to it. Most of the ones I saw and in areas I lived were old, converted gas stations with an open front they'd roll up at night when they closed. You'd pull in, tell them your order, pay them and they'd bring you your swag. There was one in Monrovia that got popped selling weed out of it, too. They were very casual about it. People would just roll right up and say "gallon of milk, stick of butter, loaf of Wonder Bread and an eighth of Purple Haze" or somesuch. We were sittin' out in SoCen when it hit the news and one of my stoner friends yelled "Why can't we live in the burbs!?!" like they all did it.

Seriously though, those things were life savers sometimes.

Yes, it's very weird to be completely surrounded by people and feel so alone. I have found taco trucks through walking around randomly in foreign (to me) parts of town. I have neither heard of nor experienced bread dudes or drive through dairy. In Texas we had a few drive through beer barns though! I will have to search for these.

I read your posts about Norwegians and such and was wondering if you had been to Olson's Scandinavian Deli. I've driven past the store a few times when I lived in the Mid-city West/Mid-Wilshire area, but never went in to investigate.

LA was pretty lonely in the beginning and it still doesn't quite feel like home without pets. Caturday has helped me get through (or maybe just endure) my pet withdrawals. Thank you so much for the therapy!!

Welcome!  What lovely pets!  Sorry you had to leave them behind.  :o(  They are beautiful.

Thank you! Living vicariously through you all has helped tremendously.

Hugs to all who need/want them. :)

Pardon me for interrupting caturday but I have a need to rant/scream.

This is for the idiot who decided that passing on a double yellow line on mountain roads while going at least twice the speed limit was a good idea. If you have a death wish fine, go ahead and take yourself out, do us all a favor by cleaning up the gene pool, but don't take the people you almost hit head on and the car behind them and me with you.

Oh yeah, and one more thing, get the hell out of my state

That is all, we now return you to your regularly scheduled caturday

Hello all. Just made my account last night after lurking on the Caturday threads for the past 6 months. We do not currently have furry friends living with us as we moved out of parental homes in Dallas into a no-pets-allowed apartment in Los Angeles.  We just moved into a place that does allow them, but we're of two minds about getting a cat. Very tempted to bring home a cat from a shelter, but I'd prefer us picking one together over coercion. We shall see.

Anywho, here are some photos of our beloved friends back in Texas.

Simon, the indoor/outdoor cat that ended up preferring my dad over me. He tends to run away before I can take pictures. This one is from February 2010 when we got some decent snow.

My whole crew piled up on the couch in 2011 when Callie and Grace were puppies + Dad "reading" Harry Potter. They still like to sleep like this, albeit with bigger bodies on a smaller futon. :)

Hi everybuddee!

Happee Birfday, Salem Witch!

Very happy that Little Moo was found, RWDA!  Sorry that the mean grey kitty beat him up, but glad that you blasted him with the super soaker.  That'll learn 'im!

vudutek- sorry to hear about your mom, but glad she's stabilized.  My dad has COPD as well.  {{{hugs}}}

Hugs and skritches to anyone else I may have missed.

I also wanted to thank all of you for your support during this crazy time in the Pie house.  I know that when I come here, I can laugh and hear reason and "other words" besides the same old day after day stuff in RL.

I lurves you guize!

Debby7813: What an amazing Green Man/Oak King image! Has the MooMoo Kitty come back yet? It sounds like the grey beast was trying to have his way with her. Is she spayed?

Happy Monday, everybuddy!

Yeah, she came back and seems OK. Her right ear is clipped, so it looks like she was part of a TNR program and should have been rehomed, but for some reason was not. If she was, they may have fell victim to the housing shenanigans in my area and put her right back out - which is totally unconsci.. unchosh... farked up, dude. . The housing repos have slowed down a lot, but it still happens, so we still get a lot of orphaned kittehs and I think there's a dog out there now, too. Little Moo's not feral enough to hang with the other ferals, but not socialized enough to hang with teh hoomins. I'm working on her, though. Maybe by the end of kitten season, I'll be able to find someone with room for her so she can have a good furever home. 'Tis my hope.

I also nailed the grey dude with a super soaker loaded with water and apple cider vinegar this morning when he came on our turf. Twice, because I cut through the house and managed to get him that second time by popping out a side door at him while he was still in our yard on the other side of the house. He got the morning message for sure, as he saw me walking later and dove for cover. We'll see if he comes back this afternoon and evening. I'm ready and waiting - no plans either, so I have allllll day, kitteh. All the long day. Stop on by - if you dare! *evil chortle goes here*

Good Meowning, everybuddy! Teh ebil grey kitteh that beat up Little Moo came back this morning and since I moved her food right on the other side of the glass from GoGo Beastie's food, I saw him right away. Nailed him with the super soaker. He ran to the side of the house, I ran through the house, through the garage, opened the side door and hopped out with my tiny Cali chick, descended from Viking type peoples battle cry! RAAIIIIII! Nailed him again right on his fluffy butt. I rambled up to the store after that, saw him cruising up the sidewalk and the minute he saw me, rather than just give me the stink eye as he usually does, he dove for cover in a hedge. I think he's got the message.

Oh, and Happy Birfday to Salem Witch!

Kittehs are all over the place right now and driving me insane.  On the plus side, they are eating solid food now, so all we have to do is ween them from mom and get them litter trained, then they are off to their new homes.  I also miscalculated on the baby beardies as we have one more hatching, which will make 13.  Wife and I can't remember if it was 13 or 14 eggs, so it's hard to tell if we have one more to go or not.  Also getting everything ready for my daughter and the mother to leave for a vacation down in Florida for a week.  Will be kind of nice not to have the house so crowded, and especially nice when my son leaves for boy scout camp next weekend.  That will mean the wife and I will be alone (not including all the assorted animals) for the first time since all the surgeries last year.  Not sure what we'll do with all the quiet, but would be nice to get some uninterrupted sleep for once in a while.  Have a good Caturday everyone, and if you don't hear from me next weekend, the wife and I are enjoying the silence for once.

Not at all! If I'd bothered to turn on a tape recorder, you could have had an in-depth explanation of the American Revolution to a 10-year old that lasted about half an hour, invoked baby Jesus in there somewhere (and Saint Reagan!) and ended with "and that's why you can buy a RPG on a street corner in Los Angeles from the guys with the facial tattoos. I too, hate when that happens. Or when a store purchase totals that amount.

A friend of mine and I stopped in at a 7-11 down in SoCal and the register rang up to that amount. The cashier quickly added a penny. Nuh-uh! I IZ POOR! It took me a long time back then to find enough change to buy stuffs from a 7-11. I told her to take the penny off and if it bothered her that much, take another penny off. We actually argued about it for a while before my friend dragged me out yelling "I'm not listening to you fight over a penny when I wanted to go to the taqueria anyway!"

I'm superstitious about some things, but that's not one of them. If for some odd reason I'm ever in a kitchen with you and you drop something and I yell "Watch out!", I'm warning your house Nissen so they don't get hurt and then do bad things to you like tie your cows' tails together or make your milk curdle. You gotta be mindful of those things, you know! Still, feel free to giggle at me.

I had this happen at McD a few years ago.  I was so startled I didn't say anything to the woman who took the payment.  When I got to the window I just asked to speak to the manager, yes still at the drive through.  I told him what happened and told him that I wanted my penny, which I of course I received.  It felt a little weird, but it was my penny damnit!  It was the principle of the thing. :D

Yup. Besides, I don't shun people for breaking a New Year's Resolution (though, being a Heathen, I could. Oath breaking is serious business to us), so don't expect me to fear a number from an entirely different cultural faith system that, according to even older translations, isn't even the right number (it's actually 616). It's just a horror movie/metal head thing now. Or at least should be, but I guess some people don't keep up with the academic side of things.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: konekosama: just had elbows pasta last night but would totally make mac n cheese tonight if i were less lazy

One of the most interesting and strangely tasty leftover elbow pasta uses I've seen was a friend who decided to clean out her refrigerator, diced everything that didn't smell funky, threw it in with the pasta and stirred it together with some sort of salad dressing (I think she just combined a couple types). She called it "pasta salad" and the same people who wouldn't eat the leftovers the previous few days chowed that Frankenpasta Salad down without complaint.

I do something similar except I do it with rice: stir fry rice with a little sesame oil, add a couple of eggs beaten with soy sauce, and add whatever leftovers came out of the fridge. House fried rice!

Timid Goddess: Thinking of (gulp) making homemade mac'n'cheese for my toddler. I want it reduced fat.  Start with rue of equal parts flour and butter.  For the sauce should I go evaporated milk, not sweetened condensed stuff, for a rich, creamy sauce or 1% milk?  Add a bag of 2% shredded cheese.  Equal parts cheese to milk?  Also low salt.  I don't want to add any salt to it, should I add other herbs/spices?  Also can I sneak any veggies into it?

Either would work, the evaporated milk will be a richer flavor, but you can do it cheaper by adding powdered milk to your abomination to the gods of dairy skim milk. As far as cheese to milk ratio, I make my sauce very thin as it will thicken as you add the cheese into it. My most common combo is to add two handfuls of extra sharp cheddar, a handful of swiss and repeat until I get the thickness I'm looking for. You end up using a lot of cheese, so start with a small amount of your mother sauce or you'll be running out for more cheese unless, like me, you have enough cheese on hand to feed an army of mice (or dairy lovers) for a year. I usually add a shot of tabasco, not to add heat, but just to brighten the flavors.

Also, just like quiche, you can add whatever you wish to your mac and cheese. If you don't want them to see the veggies, steam then puree, but be aware of any potential color changes depending on what type of veggie. Also, the texture will be impacted, but not exactly negatively. I often use a diced potato in cream soups before puree time, then just finish with a bit of cream (and sometimes a pat of butter, depending on what it is) to get the right mouth feel without adding too much fat. Whatever herbs you add will depend on which veggies and/or meats you add to it as well and what sorts of cheese you use. I'm fond of chipotles with all kinds of cheese myself, but rarely use it because I live with a bunch of wussies Norwegians. They seem to think it's "too spicy" if it's anything more than a tiny bit of pepper. That's definitely not genetic.

Would it be better to make fried mac'n'cheese patties by scooping, dipping in 1% milk and bread crumbs, saute-ing, freezing and reheating or making the sauce and fridging/freezing the sauce and making small batches of macaroni to add the sauce to?

If you want to serve it fried from the freezer, then do the work now while you have time, of course. While I've never made fried mac and cheese myself, I did use a similar method with some leftover risotto and made little arangini (sp?) - fried rice balls, 'cept I didn't need the milk as the crumbs stick just fine to chilled risotto, so they should with mac n cheese as well. Just chill it down first. I also oven baked them on a screen after rolling in breadcrumbs rather than fried them. They were incredibly tasty! Some are sitting in my big freezer right now, and I think I'll thaw a couple for gran and I to snack on later. They should reheat well in the toaster oven and maintain the crispy outside as long as I thaw them on a screen or rack to keep condensation from gumming them up. (air drying homemade onion rings for at least half an hour before you fry them is also a good way to maintain crispness, btw, something I just figured out but should have guessed long ago).

If you want to serve it as mac n cheese instead of fried mac n cheese later down the road, I'd make them separately, then do the pasta fresh and add the cheese later. Pasta cooks very quickly. You could combine them in single serve portions, just be aware that even though the pasta is cooked, any residual starch will further thicken the sauce and they will also absorb even more of it, so you'll want it to be a bit more loose when it goes into the freezer.

Bear in mind, that is how I approach things. There are several ways that I'm sure people who paid moneez for their edumacation in the culinary shenanigans may favor, but from a "I started as a dishwasher when I was 14 and hold the home cook close in my heart" stance that I take, that just makes more sense to me.

He lives a few doors up from me and his hoomin is a little kid who named him "Cool". So, does Cool get the bad luck because a black-clad hoomin crossed his path, or do we cancel each other out?

Yes, I wondered about that when it happened, as even though that is not one of my superstitions, it's hard not to know about it.

Also, what about things like THIS?
25.media.tumblr.com
I say the kid's an evil wizard in training, but that's probably just me. For all we know he's an accountant (which is really close to the same as a wizard, just less cats).

maynerdkitty: parasol: maynerd -

I am very familiar with the tokay (aka "f- you lizard") variety of gecko - can't tell from your pic if this is one (they are greenish with reddish spots)

Insects are a great bet - beware they tend to eliminate almost whole (like people with corn) - avoid
over bright lights if it is a tokay - they are nocturnal/crepsucular. The ones here eat palmetto bugs with much glee.

I've some that are close to a foot long - and they will let you know if they are threatened

enjoy - they are neat creatures

My little nephew came out from central California to visit the farm. Before he left we took the gecko out to the willow tree by my clothes line. He let it go and we saw it run into some leaves. He put the little dinosaur and dolphin statues from the jar in the base of the tree so it would know where home was. He named it Gustav. My sister thought it was a banded gecko, it was orangy tan and had a black and white striped tail. Cool little thing but I don't want the bother of feeding it, and I want it out in the garden eating those bugs.

Your little nephew has excellent taste in names. I have a cousin named "Gautr", the Old Norse variant of that name. It means "stave (staff) of the Goths" and since the Goths were a Scandinavian tribe, you now have a Gecko named for Nordic weaponry (or one who wields it) guarding your garden from the ebil bugzes!

Oh, wow. Just heard on local news one of these is hanging out in a tree near an apartment complex pool area about two miles from my house.
pt-lobos.parks.state.ca.us

They'll send someone out to dart it, tag it, relocate it up the hill. It's been so hot here he's probably looking for water. When they come this far into the city, they're usually young males trying to find territory, food and water. Still, it's been a couple years since we've had one this far into the city. The water sources in the foothills dry up quickly, but they usually end up on people's farms drinking out of horse troughs or their ponds and pools, not down here in the 'burbs.

Salem Witch: sno man:

That cat looks like he can take care of himself...
But he'll be back. He's just got some cool cat stuff to do.

He must be. But he is so cross-eyed, I make sure to call his name as I approach him. If I don't he runs away.

He looks like one of a pair of cats my family had when I was a kid. Cheech & Chong were littermates with that coloring. Chong had a kink in his tail, and Cheech's eyes were more crossed than Chong's but otherwise they were almost identical. Cheech unfortunately disappeared a couple of years after we got them, but Chong lived a very long life with our family. He used to love to change the oil in the neighbors' cars (used to come home smudged with oil, we gave him baths regularly and he liked them!), and he would hitch rides to work with people if they left their car windows open overnight. One neighbor in particular learned to check inside her car before leaving for work after having to drive the little booger home a couple of times. He was a great cat.

P.S. This was a long time ago and I was a kid. I didn't know any better, so all of our cats were indoor/outdoor. I have since learned how hard it is on a cat and its environment to let it outside, so any cats I have had as an adult were strictly indoor cats.

I don't have beer but I have Woodchuck

Well, I do have a bottle of Edmund Fitzgerald but not sure you want to drink it. I've had it for 3 years.
What can I say, the bottle is really freaking cool :)

I don't know what either one of those are, but.....hey! Bust 'em open!!! :D

Woodchuck is hard applecider..also known as Apple Jack..and Edmund Fitzgerald is made by the Great Lakes Brewing Co. and is a dark beer. I like it, very smooth. No bitter finish.

Oh, okay! That sounds nice! I'm not really much of a micro-brew kindof person. I have a boring palate, but I am always up to trying something different. I usually end up not liking it, though. I'm a cheap date.... :D

Actually, Apple Jack is apple brandy (aka US made calvados). Woodchuck is yummy!

I do have a bottle of mead in the fridge. (White Winter Winery from Northern Wisconsin and really tasty)

.
A woodchuck who may not be apple but he does look a bit hard:

I had some mead for the first time last Saturday night at Litha ritual - I was rather surprised by how good it tasted.

Mmmm....mead.
I gots a batch going right now...well, two actually. One is spiced orange mead, the other is going to be flavored with rose.
For those of you playing at home and going 'So what's the difference?', mead is made from fermented honey while wines are made from fermented fruit. Beers, ales, etc. are from fermented grains.

Ya wanna watch out for those smooth, sweet meads. They have very little alcohol 'bite'...but they can kick like a Missouri mule.
Mine usually come out at 20-23% alcohol. Commercial wines are usually around 9-10%.

/ I'm a hardcore nissan fan.
// ...and what did you think would happen?

/altima

My experience with new cars since I could afford my first new car in 1986

1986 Buick Skylark...prettiest car you've ever seen in the service bay..where it spent most of its life.
1990 Nissan Stanza - Awesome!
1992 Nissan 240sx - Awesomer (small mid-life thing going on)
1994 Nissan Sentra - Money probs...had to trade out the 240 :o(
1996 Mercury Villager - I cheated...It was really a re-branded Quest with more options.
1996 Ford Windstar?- Ford gave me a great deal when I returned the Villager. It was a nice van though.
1998 Nissan Altima. - For the Wife.
2000 Nissan Frontier 4X4 Crew cab - Bright Yellow - My baby, I had this one the longest.
2004 Nissan Sentra - Rare model with the 2.5 liter. A rocket. It was for the wife but my testosterone picked it.
2008 Nissan Versa - For the wife. The Sentra was too powerful for her...My bad!
2009 Nissan Murano SL - I'm getting old
2012 Nissan Murano SL - Loaded. I'm officially old.

None of these Nissans (and the Fords) ever gave me any problems. The Buick on the other hand couldn't go two weeks without a trip to the shop.

Wow, Sorry for the wall of text. That turned into a trip down memory lane.

Have a cat.

Lemme guess. Big Nissan fan?

//I remember when the company was called Datsun. Bet you do too.

Ha!  I do!  My Grandpa sold Datsuns for a living in the 70s, everybody in our family owned one!  My dad had a biatchin orange 510.  (That is until his three kids got too big to all fit in the backseat without fights breaking out, so it got traded in for a big old Impala.  Which was pretty cool too actually.)  To this day I still call Nissans Datsuns.  :op

Although I never actually learned to drive, I've owned (and had ex-husband drive the ever-lovin shiat out of) several Honda Civics, and adored every single one of them, would not hesitate to recommend!

And here we begin with the Dawwww moments.  The kittehs will now be five weeks old tomorrow, and they are just all over the place now that they have graduated to the living room.  The wife's red couch is now ground zero for them for some reason, but things are going well with all of them.  Uncle Piggy for some reason seems a little scared of them, and Uncle Mo stays far away.  Aunt Fatty Waffles is another one who has nothing to do with them, but momma Scampi is doing a great job with all of them, especially during feeding throw down when Sashimi Fettucini and Moo Shu Tiramisu decide to start a fight over who goes where.  So to start with, here's Sashimi and me after I thought I'd take a nap for a while, but was rudely interrupted.
sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net
And when I try to be on my couch, the result is the same.

Probably the last time they all sleep like this, seeing as how they don't really all fit in there anymore.

Not to be out done, Pu Pu Pasta does the back stretch sleep also.

And then there's our little S-H-I-I-T-A-K-E Parmesan, the little loner.  She's content to go off on her own and prefers to be left alone during play time.

On the way home I stopped and picked up a pizza. When I walked in the door Jack and Gremie came running to greet me and then Jack started to run out the door for his nightly walk around the yard when he stopped and sniffed.
No way was he going out until after the pizza was eaten. Gremie ran to the table and waited for the box to be opened.

tigerose: RadicalEd: Ivan Catman went to vet today again.

Here's an older picture of the catman. This is what I'm assuming he'll do the rest of the day:

Poor kitteh! Has he been taking lessons frm Eli? Once the vet tech came back into the room wearing a pair of hawking gloves, with Eli scruffed, but supported. Once on the table, he ran straight to my stinky pit, shoved his head in for maximum snuffs..and was calm as could be. I nearly had to give the vet tech her teeth from off the floor.

I tried my hand at that very briefly. Went for some schoolin' and everything! I was the Crazy Cat Lady - I got to deal with alllll the crazy cats. Apparently I had a previously undiscovered skill set. While not always faster than the speed of cat, I've a pretty good record at mid-air escapee retrieval (it's all in the wrist), very few wounds to myself and none to the critter while in the heat of "YOU ARE TOO COMING OUT OF THERE!!!" battle if they're in a cage in the ward and the ability to use medical tape to secure a kitten to an x-ray table and quit giggling long enough to take absolutely perfect x-rays. Also, I probably didn't invent the "just put the snake through this here piece of PVC tube I found in the back yard/kennels, tape head, then tape tail, then get the x-ray", but it was the first time the doctors had ever seen anyone do it. They thought it was hilarious.

There's this thing called a "cat bag" (well, that's what we called it). You drop the uncooperative kitty in the bag, zip it up with just its widdle head sticking out, then use one of the other multiple zippers to pull out a leg for a blood draw. You can't do a jug stick safely that way as it can obviously still bite, but you can get the saphenous vein (back leg) with some degree of safety. Too bad the kitties kept bringing in all those stoopid hoomins with them. I hated that part. Oh, and ranch calls. I hated ranch calls. That's when I had to get the rabies series was because of the ranch calls.

I like cookin' better anyway. Also, cheffin' stuff pays better. Not much, but still better.

Weird. She's fine. She got spayed on Thursday. There's just a lot of worry because of the history of her two brothers that passed from FIP. Spaying causes a lot of stress on the body & immune system and that has me worried, since most kittens develop FIP while their immune system is lowered (After a cold, surgery, vaccination, etc...).

Free Love

One cannot buy love.

It creeps into your heart,
One soft paw at a time.

Freely given
And received.

It sneaks up,
While you are busy.

Winds it's way,
Around your ankles.

Sits on your feet.
Claims your chair.

Beds down in your hair.

Demands responsibility,
With an iron paw.

Fills your home,
Fills your heart.

Until, one day,
You realize.

You are owned.
You are loved.

You are Blessed,
Beyond measure.

I've got Norwegians I've been told are related to me in and out of the house, expecting tours, shenanigans with a friend's catering business I had to step in and help with, more shenanigans with a different friend's ex-wife, who has mistaken me for a new girlfriend and is being a pain, and TONS of shenanigans with the feral cat colony I help out with. The preggers female has vanished, so I think someone let her in or trapped her somewhere. I hope she is OK.

Moo Moo kitty will now let me get close enough to her I can see she was part of a TNR as her right ear is topped off. If it's very early in the morning and I have gooshy fuds, she'll even let me give her booty skritches! Any other time, even if I have gooshies, no way she'll let me touch her. She purrs and eats with me standing right there, though. She also comes up to me when called. So I think I have a new outdoor kitty mistress (definitely a female, she's a DSH, so it was easy to tell). GoGo Beastie is not too terribly impressed with her outside sister, but she's warming up to it a bit. Even has figured out that if she scratches on the door early in the morning to let me know Little Moo is out there, she'll get her breakfast gooshies early since I feed her first. Kind of like my sister, blame it all on the other one. Heh. Sisters be devious!

Also, it's so hot here I put a dishpan full of nice, cold water - with ice - in the back yard. Two skwerls were sitting inside it about five minutes later. I've never seen a skwerl do that before. Enjoy, little dudes.

Momma kitty is such a pretty girl!  I am sure that with a little love & patience she will learn to deal with people in her life.  Feral kitties sometimes take years to adapt to life with people.  My little Abby was feral when I caught her at 6 weeks of age and she still hides if someone new comes into the house, but she has gotten so much better.  Now she just sits around the corner in our bedroom instead of hiding for hours under the bedside table, or in the bed under the covers.  She will be 3 on Sept. 1st.

maynerd -

I am very familiar with the tokay (aka "f- you lizard") variety of gecko - can't tell from your pic if this is one (they are greenish with reddish spots)

Insects are a great bet - beware they tend to eliminate almost whole (like people with corn) - avoid
over bright lights if it is a tokay - they are nocturnal/crepsucular. The ones here eat palmetto bugs with much glee.

I've some that are close to a foot long - and they will let you know if they are threatened

enjoy - they are neat creatures

Whether posting something from the web or my Flickr account I always click the 'Use HTML Buttons' in the upper right of the posting field. Never have a problem.

My process (Win8, Chrome):
Open Photostream in Flickr.
Click picture.
Click 3 dot icon on bottom right, select 'View all sizes'.
I usually select Medium  640, YMMV.
Right-click on pic, select "Copt image URL"
Click Image icon on Fark post, paste, wipe hands on pants.

Good morning everybody.  Here's a pic of Emma sleeping.  If you look closely, you can see a pair of my boxers in the back ground.  Oddly enough, the only time I can get pictures of her is when she's staying put, which is often, but she's just always sleeping.  No action shots, rarely anything with her eyes open.

farm6.staticflickr.com

Incidentally, she also has a habit of sleeping with one arm straight out in the air.

Was wondering how you guys felt about catnip and how much is too much if I were to give her some raw.  I put some in cat toys from time to time, and she seems to enjoy it, but I was thinking about growing a plant for her.

When I had to start giving Wimsey eyedrops (Refresh Optive- dry eyes), I'd give him a treat after treatment (wordplay, but not as good as yours).

After about the 3rd repitition, he quit fussing and tolerated them quietly.
Then he made the 'eyedrops=feels better' connection.
He will 'ask' for his eyedrops now when his eyes are bothering him...and not just to get a treat.

Now to catch up on the rest of the thread....

Mom mode is good though. With Mom mode you aren't going to settle for "we don't know" you will keep pickin and squawkin until someone comes up with an answer. It's what we do. *places onion on belt* When my kid was young, we had all sorts of people telling us that he had this or that, I kept saying, "I think he is gifted, and very frustrated in his classroom. Why don't you give him extra work, so he is busy". I fought like crazy to get him into the gifted program in Middle School. I called the board, I demanded they test him. They did. The "shrink" that did the testing said to me, "Oh yeah, he's precociously gifted verbally, has an incredible knowledge base. No wonder he doesn't relate well to his peers!" Best thing I ever did.

So, you go girl! ((hug))

Cute little thing, he looks like a baby gecko to me, I didn't know we had them out here. My nephew is coming to visit on Saturday so I pan to show it to him and then we will find a safe place on the farm to turn him loose. Any ideas on what to feed him until then? I put plants and dirt from the yard in the jar with him. I thought he could eat some plants or maybe bugs that may be on the plants or in the soil. He is a tiny thing, almost went down the drain.

Salem Witch: lilyspad: Salem Witch: Seriously, the hookers love Suzy.

LOL!!!

I do joke about the hookers liking Suzy (they really do). But to be serious for just one post, one of the most important things we can learn from our critters is acceptance.

Suzy will walk up to homeless people, hookers, gang members, she doesn't care. If they pet her, she wags her tail. It takes no effort on my part to treat them with respect and kindness. And they get a little bright spot in their day.

What making a little bright spot in you day might look like.

Suzy was consoling my nephew's daughter after she was scolded for something.

My little pooch always turns scowls into smiles on the street. He's hyper, won't obey even simple commands - but everyone loves him, and I especially enjoy it when a homeless person wants to pet him. Sometimes it's a ruse for 50 cents but usually they just want to pet a dog. It's one of life's simple pleasures you can't always get living on the street.

A few years ago I got my hands on a portable swamp cooler and souped it up with a better water pump. It keeps the bedroom I share with Sugarbear and Zooty (other cat) comfortably cool.
Sugarbear will have his sutures removed this week and I will be grateful when his fur grows back in (he's probably wondering why I apologize so much for doing that to him). Here's some new pictures of him that are NSFW for some:

On of our cats is named Bob.  She's very old and she came with the house, but for the first few years we couldn't get close enough to find out her sex, so she was "Bob."  It took four years to get her to come inside, but she's adjusted admirably.  She's between 12-15 according to the vet:

However old she is, she doesn't seem to miss being outside.  She likes being in bed:

She'll wake up, eat, and then go back to bed.  If I'm working on the computer, she'll come see me, but then it's back to bed.  Bob's natural state these days (and has been for the past two years):

Salem Witch:  But to be serious for just one post, one of the most important things we can learn from our critters is acceptance.
Suzy will walk up to homeless people, hookers, gang members, she doesn't care. If they pet her, she wags her tail. It takes no effort on my part to treat them with respect and kindness. And they get a little bright spot in their day.

Well said.

If he will let you (or even if he won't, get hubby and son to hold him) flush his eye out with sterile saline
The white boy says he will provide the bandages after you do this

That cat looks like he can take care of himself...
But he'll be back. He's just got some cool cat stuff to do.

He must be. But he is so cross-eyed, I make sure to call his name as I approach him. If I don't he runs away.

LOL!!!

I do joke about the hookers liking Suzy (they really do). But to be serious for just one post, one of the most important things we can learn from our critters is acceptance.

What making a little bright spot in you day might look like.

Looks like a sweat band! :D

It's really old so I searched the internet to see if they make them, they don't make this kind anymore, they've evolved into light weight moisture wicking head rings. Sooo while I was searching I saw some stuff that I absolutely had to have and just spent $40 on Amazon.  Since it's entirely your fault I'll be expecting a check.

Totally unrelated, this pic looks really cool when I set it as my desktop background. Morticia is entirely surrounded by black, she looks like she's coming right through my monitor.

Well, I got the phone call that I've been waiting for today.  The hospital that Little Pie needs to go to for her eating/swallowing problem called and set up an initial visit with the 3 of us.  It's in Evansville, IN (abt. 4.5 hrs. away).  Once that visit happens, they can determine how long she has to stay there.  Thankfully, she'll be outpatient, which means I get to stay with her (at the Ronald McDonald House across the street from the hospital), so it won't be too traumatic for her.

She starts her anti-anxiety meds tomorrow, so pray to Ceiling Cat for me that that goes well!

Ralphie is so sweet looking. What a nice neighborhood you have!

Thanks. It's not a bad neighborhood, once you get to know the hookers.

It's one of the oldest parts of Salem and it is kept up for the most part but we do have a few apartment buildings that aren't very amenable about scrutinizing renter candidates.

Seriously, the hookers love Suzy.

And no, I don't have pics.

laulaja: sno man, based on limited purrsonal experience I'd ,say your GangOf5 mewbies may be closer to 2 weeks old.  GangOf5 here were 3.5 wks old at our vet's guesstimate & looked Considerably Older than the ones t your place at present.

[i.imgur.com image 700x649]
Or mayhap not --Think this the early one I sought, when they still fairly new here.

The shelter we are fostering for had had them for about a week and they came in as a bunch.  Just today the kittens were opening their eyes a bit more and at the same time... so probably between 2 and 2.5 weeks.  Mom is finally settling in, she was over 24 hours before she ate or drank at all.. and still bolts when we go in, but she is finally eating and drinking and grooming and litterboxing.
here`s a fresh pic from just a few hours ago...

A thread about kitties wearing scarves? WOO HOO!

I don't have a pic of Suzy wearing a scarf. How about Suzy wearing bunny ears?

Or an Easter egg.

credit CDK his vurra self on ~11-17-12

3:11PM golly gee whiz.  Tried to check in after then to see, but didn't find anything.  Feared I might not be allowed in a-tall as sr cat Ginger tried his durndest to mess up my new computah that doesn't sing at me.  Attempted to give me a new password that only he knew, that was worse & longer than full version of LlanfairPG in Welsh Wales.
But now some needed/desired items may come to pass after all.  & he's so certain he's such a good cat; purrs like recent thunderstorms when I cradle him for his nightly ear prick for blood sugar testing.
