3:11PM golly gee whiz.  Tried to check in after then to see, but didn't find anything.  Feared I might not be allowed in a-tall as sr cat Ginger tried his durndest to mess up my new computah that doesn't sing at me.  Attempted to give me a new password that only he knew, that was worse & longer than full version of LlanfairPG in Welsh Wales.
But now some needed/desired items may come to pass after all.  & he's so certain he's such a good cat; purrs like recent thunderstorms when I cradle him for his nightly ear prick for blood sugar testing.

May I just say that my cats were freaking. Due to a storm moving in I moved my "back yard" office to my "front  of the house" area. An elderly lady who I had never met before was walking her terrier. I asked her to get under and not be rained on. I called my kid to enjoy the small dog. The screeching from "my" cats was incredible. The terrier who a) stood up and was trying to be friendly and b) urinated on our catnip farm.

There is fun and humor. And there is really funny.

The shelter we are fostering for had had them for about a week and they came in as a bunch.  Just today the kittens were opening their eyes a bit more and at the same time... so probably between 2 and 2.5 weeks.  Mom is finally settling in, she was over 24 hours before she ate or drank at all.. and still bolts when we go in, but she is finally eating and drinking and grooming and litterboxing.

I knit and crochet, just sayin'...if you've GOT to have a scarf for your furry let me know.  Today I was able to walk down the cat food isle for the first time since rainbows, 1 1/2 years. I also bought all of the squeaky raccoons for the hot dog dog I walk every day.  Ps/ The owner of above mentioned doggie was so happy tonight. She gave me a few bags of yarn from her moms estate and in one bag I found 3000.00 in saving bonds and 10,000.00 in an account. Was she ever surprised and happy. Made my day!

Greetings All !!  TGIC !!  All of the crew says Hi..... still unmessing.. but have made good progress.. I will be taking a week off soon, need to paint the house.. going with a beige semi - gloss oil based paint... matching the sheds.. went with a blue before, was bluer than I thought.. neighbors call it the house of smurf.. may do a light blue trim... had a 'friend' paint it before.. got the first coat on three sides and bailed... with the money... my bad.. and he knows better than to come back.... busy as hades at work.. AC is working now, have to run drainage lines.. ran the water main today.. hoping to finish tomorrow... more shait keeps getting added to the list.. added a note to the top of the list, stating if it,s urgent, consult the yellow pages... message got across....

2013-06-27 09:43:13 PM
Um...okay. This is just me, but.....why are you going with gloss? And why oil-based? Just curious as to why you would choose that. Gloss is so...shiny! And oil based maybe lasts longer, but takes longer to dry...stinks...and is hard to clean up. As opposed to latex, anyway. Not getting on you at all!! Don't get me wrong! Just curious.... :D

Thanks. It's not a bad neighborhood, once you get to know the hookers.

It's one of the oldest parts of Salem and it is kept up for the most part but we do have a few apartment buildings that aren't very amenable about scrutinizing renter candidates.

Well, I got the phone call that I've been waiting for today.  The hospital that Little Pie needs to go to for her eating/swallowing problem called and set up an initial visit with the 3 of us.  It's in Evansville, IN (abt. 4.5 hrs. away).  Once that visit happens, they can determine how long she has to stay there.  Thankfully, she'll be outpatient, which means I get to stay with her (at the Ronald McDonald House across the street from the hospital), so it won't be too traumatic for her.

She starts her anti-anxiety meds tomorrow, so pray to Ceiling Cat for me that that goes well!

Looks like a sweat band! :D

It's really old so I searched the internet to see if they make them, they don't make this kind anymore, they've evolved into light weight moisture wicking head rings. Sooo while I was searching I saw some stuff that I absolutely had to have and just spent $40 on Amazon.  Since it's entirely your fault I'll be expecting a check.

Totally unrelated, this pic looks really cool when I set it as my desktop background. Morticia is entirely surrounded by black, she looks like she's coming right through my monitor.

lilyspad: Salem Witch: Seriously, the hookers love Suzy.

LOL!!!

I do joke about the hookers liking Suzy (they really do). But to be serious for just one post, one of the most important things we can learn from our critters is acceptance.

Suzy will walk up to homeless people, hookers, gang members, she doesn't care. If they pet her, she wags her tail. It takes no effort on my part to treat them with respect and kindness. And they get a little bright spot in their day.

What making a little bright spot in you day might look like.

lilyspad: Um...okay.

Exterior.. semi gloss is easier to clean and doesn't have that dull look.. don't like latex outside.... inside, definitely latex, for the reasons you gave... Also, I have asbestos shingles outside, in good condition.. kinda like the look.. thought about going with vinyl siding.. would break up the shingles, might get the EPA involved, and I have seen houses with vinyl after a bad storm... ugly !....

Some things are not meant to be..... friends in need.. I can put off the trivial stuff, other things have to get done..  the only way I will get the 'hermit' weekend would be to disappear, sans phone.... can't abandon Fred and the Crew...  thought about putting a 'DANGER - CONTAGIOUS  !' sign on the door..  both phones would be ringing off the hook and neighbors would be knocking on windows wanting answers.... but I'm not complaining... I do have a way of getting out of some things..  I just mention that I had some spicy pizza, and have to be outside for a while.. seems to work well...

I submitted this as a Caturday thread last night, assuming that any Caturday submissions after thread-close Tuesday morning would be looked at for Thursday night greenlighting, but apparently not. Only links submitted Thursday afternoon/early evening are eligible :( I am unable to get back online til 8pm Mon thru Fri (my work sked is 11a to 7p). I guess I will never get a Caturday greenlight. Anyway, enough of my (self)pity party. This is about a local kitten Freida who has a rags to riches story. Hope you all like it. It's just a couple minutes long and from the local CBS affiliate.

Sickapie: Well, I got the phone call that I've been waiting for today.

This an ad for Musicians Repair Service in Akron OH in Triad, the mag of OH Music Educators Assn. We first got a copy last yr at Harmony Fest when it moved to Miami Univ. It seems to be Apr-May issue that we may snatch; interesting articles as well as this ad.  Begins, "Did your instrument get: * dropped from the bleachers * hit by a flying baton, flag or football *damaged but you don't know how *stepped on *or did it get eaten by your dog?  We specialize in projects that many repair shops turn down"
Progress likely more than halfway to pg 4 by now.

It's not so much that threads submitted before then aren't eligible, but that we get so many overall submissions on a daily basis (an average of 2,000, but frequently more than that) that the ones submitted early like yours end up getting redlit since there's no mechanism in place to set them aside until Thursday afternoon/evening.

On of our cats is named Bob.  She's very old and she came with the house, but for the first few years we couldn't get close enough to find out her sex, so she was "Bob."  It took four years to get her to come inside, but she's adjusted admirably.  She's between 12-15 according to the vet:

img24.imageshack.us

img844.imageshack.us

However old she is, she doesn't seem to miss being outside.  She likes being in bed:

img208.imageshack.us

She'll wake up, eat, and then go back to bed.  If I'm working on the computer, she'll come see me, but then it's back to bed.  Bob's natural state these days (and has been for the past two years):

Yeesh, supposed to get into the 80s (high 20s in C) in Vancouver.  That's more than enough to melt most people around here!!

I can't even imagine 112... Hottest I ever experienced was about 105 driving through B.F. Nowhere between Merritt and Lytton, BC, several years ago.  Semi-desert climate, long dusty back roads, I think there was an accident closing the main highway.  All windows open (beater car with no a/c), driving fast as possible for the strongest wind, outside arm hanging on to the roof for proper pit ventilation.  It was so bad we even stopped and took most of our clothes off, soaked our shirts with water from the cooler and wrapped them around our heads, and I still nearly passed out from the heat!  It sucked when we neared civilization again and had to put our shirts back on.  Ditched the bra though.  God I never want to experience heat like that again.  I am such a temperate-rainsoaked-Vancouver-pampered wuss!

May the a/c be with you, Lilyspad!   :)

Sugarbear Update:
We're doing fine in this heatwave despite the fact that the AC died on us this afternoon (Just bought a new compressor for it a couple of years ago too). A few years ago I got my hands on a portable swamp cooler and souped it up with a better water pump. It keeps the bedroom I share with Sugarbear and Zooty (other cat) comfortably cool.
Sugarbear will have his sutures removed this week and I will be grateful when his fur grows back in (he's probably wondering why I apologize so much for doing that to him). Here's some new pictures of him that are NSFW for some:

Once again, thank you all for your help and your love for Sugarbear.

You guys really want to see photos of my ex-husband's hairy beer gut??

j/k.... sorry no pics for that trip. Back then cameras used something called film, which made casual photography such a pain in the ass, we only took photos on special occasions.

Crazy kids today with their smart phone thingamadoohickies and megapickles, whipping 'em out whenever they please!

Salem Witch: lilyspad: Salem Witch: Seriously, the hookers love Suzy.

Suzy was consoling my nephew's daughter after she was scolded for something.

My little pooch always turns scowls into smiles on the street. He's hyper, won't obey even simple commands - but everyone loves him, and I especially enjoy it when a homeless person wants to pet him. Sometimes it's a ruse for 50 cents but usually they just want to pet a dog. It's one of life's simple pleasures you can't always get living on the street.

I went outside to call them, and the little feral cat that has always stayed at least 10 feet from me, has come over and flopped over and started begging for pets. If it wasn't a male, I'd swear it was in heat! He's meowing, trolling, rubbing my leg, and begging to be petted some more. I'm flabbergasted.

And again, I don't know how to make this smaller, But you can see the little critter better.  I found him in my kitchen sink! Cute little thing, he looks like a baby gecko to me, I didn't know we had them out here. My nephew is coming to visit on Saturday so I pan to show it to him and then we will find a safe place on the farm to turn him loose. Any ideas on what to feed him until then? I put plants and dirt from the yard in the jar with him. I thought he could eat some plants or maybe bugs that may be on the plants or in the soil. He is a tiny thing, almost went down the drain.

HorsesLived4MillionYearsAgo, StudyOfAncientDNAShows mentioned by me yesterday, now gone from page display
Thursday, 27 Jun 2013 12:34 PM  in NewsMax  By Andrea Billups
Scientists working in Canada have discovered the genome of an ancient horse that is 10 times older than any previously found genetic materials and dates back at least 4 million years.
A report in the journal Nature says the material extracted from the toe bone of a 700,000-year-old horse fossil may help reconstruct the path of evolution over millions of years.
The discovery has already led scientists to determine that the horse species is more than 4 million years old or more than twice as old as previously thought. By comparing the ancient DNA to that of a horse that lived 43,000 years ago and one that lives today, biologists working on the scientific team found that the Equus genus, responsible for today's horses, donkeys and zebras, roamed the earth at least four million year ago.
Researchers Duane Froese of Canada's University of Alberta along with Eske Willerslev (name to conjure with?  my comment) of the University of Copenhagen discovered the hind toe bone. It had been buried in layers of permafrost, keeping it at optimum conditions - both cold and dry - to preserve its secrets. It was located in Thistle Creek in the Yukon Territory's famed Klondike gold mines.
"We have beaten the time barrier," evolutionary biologist Ludovic Orlando said. "All of a sudden you have access to many more extinct species than you could have ever dreamed of sequencing before."
While the chemicals in DNA start to break down after an animal dies, enough of the ancient specimen was available to study. What scientists discovered was a wide range of traits that were described as far more fragmented than other horse specimens from the ice age and the same region - leading them to conclude this new sample was far older.
Previously, the oldest genome recovered by scientists was a Denisovan human which was on the Earth 70,000 years ago.
Researchers told the New York Times that the new horse DNA marks a key advancement in the work of paleogenomics, an emerging field of science that has become a key partner to paleontology. Paleogenomics is the study of genomes found in fossil bones.

Eli update! He has mild conjunctivitis, although vet did not see anything on the eye, no ulcers etc. It might just have been an irritation (environmental). So, eye drops three times per day for 3 days and then if the eye looks clear, twice a day until next week..*sigh* Eli really flinched when the doc examined his eye, despite the fact that his eyeball was numb at the time. Our vet said, "He really should not be feeling that!" He was very careful with him after that. Good thing too, he flinched again when he looked under the upper eye lid.

We are glad that you trust us enough to come and share your sorrow. We really mean it when we say we share your pain. Our animals are trusted companions, who truly deserve to be mourned. Mom mode is good though. With Mom mode you aren't going to settle for "we don't know" you will keep pickin and squawkin until someone comes up with an answer. It's what we do. *places onion on belt* When my kid was young, we had all sorts of people telling us that he had this or that, I kept saying, "I think he is gifted, and very frustrated in his classroom. Why don't you give him extra work, so he is busy". I fought like crazy to get him into the gifted program in Middle School. I called the board, I demanded they test him. They did. The "shrink" that did the testing said to me, "Oh yeah, he's precociously gifted verbally, has an incredible knowledge base. No wonder he doesn't relate well to his peers!" Best thing I ever did.

So, you go girl! ((hug))

Taking a well deserved break! The humidity is really high today, making it quite sticky. Nice breeze though. I'm counting down to vacation!!! Which means I will be in the great wireless North. *sigh* might have to go to the marina to get my mail. We'll see.

In the mean time, I managed to give Eli his 2nd dose of eye drops. Without shedding blood!

Congrats!

Looking forward to chasing our foster mom cat down tomorrow for her meds... I have a feeling there will be blood.  might be able to finally get a pic though.  She's a great mom, but not even a little interested in anything to do with us yet.

Here in AZ, Molly, Shadow and I are staying indoors and hiding from the weather. If our a/c goes, we're going to the closest pet-friendly hotel. They are currently sprawled out on the tile floor, which i think is feline for "stop being cheap and kick the a/c down a couple degrees!"

Now to catch up on the rest of the thread....

((hug))

Wow.  Good for you!   Little Pie is gifted as well.  They tested her in Kindergarten.  She likes her new school so much that she wants to continue to go back.  Now she thinks her regular school is boring!  lol  These gifted schools are great in that they stimulate their brains where their normal schools don't.

Sickapie: Well, I got the phone call that I've been waiting for today.

When I had to start giving Wimsey eyedrops (Refresh Optive- dry eyes), I'd give him a treat after treatment (wordplay, but not as good as yours).

After about the 3rd repitition, he quit fussing and tolerated them quietly.
Then he made the 'eyedrops=feels better' connection.
He will 'ask' for his eyedrops now when his eyes are bothering him...and not just to get a treat.

Eli is a smart boy from what you've said...you probably won't need Transfusion-To-Go standing by.

Bathia_Mapes: John Buck 41: Bathia_Mapes: John Buck 41: I submitted this as a Caturday thread last night, assuming that any Caturday submissions after thread-close Tuesday morning would be looked at for Thursday night greenlighting, but apparently not.
Link

It's not so much that threads submitted before then aren't eligible, but that we get so many overall submissions on a daily basis (an average of 2,000, but frequently more than that) that the ones submitted early like yours end up getting redlit since there's no mechanism in place to set them aside until Thursday afternoon/evening.

Thank you the explanation.

You're welcome. :-_

I guess I was under the assumption that Caturday submissions are a special case; sort of how the Caturday thread goes for 4 1/2 days (when most Fark threads get 3 days or less)

I did give him treats after his first two treats. Amazingly his eye already looks better, and he is not squinting. It will be interesting to see how it looks in the morning. The vet didn't think it was caused by getting caught in the storm, but I do wonder. Either that or he's been playin rough with the neighborhood kittehs..

AMEN to that..  have always lived alone.. (do have the occasional visitor).. and I am not lonely.. have a huge 'family'...  and a huge Caturday family... if I could bag Kristi ( special person I wish could be in my life), I would be totally complete... that,s not going to happen, but one can dream..  what,s weird is I have had 4 lady friends move in for a while (one at a time).. needing a place to stay while getting things back together... Tim,s hideaway..... always platonic... two of them were great cooks, one was a sandwich gal and the last one could burn water... sat up many nights mostly listening, with some advising and suggesting thrown in... gave me insights I had never thought about....  and all moved on to better things.... 10 cats running my life is enough.. I can safely ignore them to a point when needed...

That there is riveting work. But I told them that I was still looking for a job down here. They are OK with that. So I'm a bit worn out.

But the biggie this weekend is my SIL's birthday/graduation. I can't imagine going back to school at this age but she finished up her Master's. The party is tomorrow.

So I'm accepting donations for my bail fund now. Just in case.

dickfreckle: Salem Witch: lilyspad: Salem Witch: Seriously, the hookers love Suzy.

That's lovely, and so true.  Dogs (and cats, for that matter) have a way of cutting through all human interpersonal dysfunctions and getting right to people's hearts.  Buddy's the same way.  We have a lot of elderly and disabled neighbours who just adore him, we always stop for a pet and a good wag, they love fussing over him as much as he loves being fussed over.  He'll even stand up and put his paws on their wheelchairs, scooters etc for ease of hand-licking and head-scritches.  He also enjoys kissing babies and children (mixed results there, depending how sneaky he is).  He is very popular!  The binners in our alleys love him too -- it's lonely when no one wants to talk to you because you're stinky, but to Buddy, you're super interesting and awesome!  And if you're carrying stinky bags, you're freaking Santa Claus.

Whatever we can do to brighten someone's day, we love to do it, makes us happy no matter who it is.  :)

HakunaMatata: Hooray for SugarBear! Im sure he will be just as happy as you, Coelacanth, for his fur to regrow.

Radak.... sincere condolences. I still miss my doggies who have crossed the bridge.

The last time I was working I picked up this portable swamp cooler from Home Depot for $300 because my brother didn't want to turn on the AC even when the thermostat needle had nowhere left to go. I only got the thing to operate normally in my bedroom after putting a box fan in the windows to blow out the excess moisture. After the pump broke last summer, I replaced it with an aquarium pump and doubled it's cooling capability. That swamp cooler was one of the best buys I ever made. The cats seem to love it as much as they love the space heater in summer.

That is so adorable!

She was the greatest companion, and died this week, after 13 wonderful years of life.

I'll miss you Etc.  Thanks for everything you gave me.  Sleep well.

I just came back in from my ritual sacrifice of the fatted stogie (cigar), and he was just the most attention
craving cat I've ever seen! I can hold my hand out, palm up, a foot above the porch floor, and he comes over
and stand up on his hind legs and lays his head in the palm of my hand. This cat has a turbocharged purring
motor with a nitrous boost! He's loud!

Later, he would come over and use his front legs to "climb" up to my hand sitting my my lap and nudge it
trying to get pettin' and scritches. He purrs and trills and rubs his face all over my pants leg and shoes.

I think I may have created a monster.

Amazing musician who is still missed.  We saw him in the late 80's & it was a phenomenal show.

Just got some bad news about one of my sister's kitties.  She took Azzie to the vet because the kitty was chewing & worrying a spot on her paw.  Turns out it was probably a spider bite so Azzie got a cortisone shot & antibiotics.  The bad part is the vet found a tumor on the back of Azzies tongue.  Azzie & her sister Shadow are only 10.  Dang.

Anyway, enough of my (self)pity party. This is about a local kitten Freida who has a rags to riches story. Hope you all like it. It's just a couple minutes long and from the local CBS affiliate.

Cat For Adoption - Please Help - DC/VA/MD- Can Travel (Re-Post)

i.imgur.com

Hi - I hate to post this in a Caturday thread and apologies for the re-post from last week but we have a cat that we need a new home for. The cat in question is one of the best cats in the world and we are sure whoever adopts her will be thrilled to have her. She's the sweetest and lowest maintenance cat I've ever seen. She's a fluffy marshmallow cat that loves cuddles and cheap cat food.

Question: Why is one of the best cats in the world up for adoption?
Answer: We have three cats - Momma-Cat, Beast-Cat and Douche-Cat. We adopted them as a package deal in Dubai when some asshole tried to drown some kittens outside our apartment; one morning we woke up to the sound of Momma-Cat screaming over the bucket her kittens were in. A quick fishing trip later we were the proud owners of two kittens and a momma cat. They all got on great until two years ago when we took the momma cat to get her teeth cleaned - from the moment she got home she has been in a fight with one of her kittens, Beast-Cat (now grown up into a 16 pound monster twice his momma's size). We have tried everything but with no luck and have come to the conclusion we need to find her a new home as the regular ass-kickings she's getting are taking their toll on her.

Question: Why is she up for adoption now and not a year ago?
Answer: We recently had a baby, and since then are no longer able to give the cats, who are separated in different parts of the house most of the time, the attention they need. Further - a couple of times they have gotten in fights near the baby and it's a risk we can't continue to take.

Question: Why isn't Beast-Cat up for adoption instead?
Answer: Beast-Cat and Douche-Cat are best buds. They are highly energetic and extremely destructive. They have a great time wrestling with each other and get on well. Beast-Cat doesn't do well on his own and any adoption with him would require a package deal with Douche-Cat. Douche-Cat is a douche and takes a lot of getting used to, we knew him as a kitten which makes it easier.

Question: Why not put her in a Cat Shelter?
Answer: She does not do well in cages and living in one would be a strain on her that we could not inflict on her, and would also make it hard to find someone to adopt her as they would not see her at her best.

Question: Have you tried X?
Answer: Yes

Question: Is she house trained?
Answer: Yes. She is also vaccinated.

Question: In the photo she looks like she's at the Vet - is she dying?
Answer: No - She was losing patches of hair due to over-cleaning herself out of anxiety due daily ass-kicking by Beast-Cat. She is recovered now as we have completely separated them into different parts of the house, a solution that is not possible in the long term as it basically involves locking her in the bedroom in the attic, which isn't fair on her and she deserves a home where she can get the love and attention she deserves.

Question: What is the return policy?
Answer: Our goal is to find her a new home where she will be happy, not just dump her. If the adoption does not work we will be happy to take her back and try to re-home her elsewhere.

Good morning everybody.  Here's a pic of Emma sleeping.  If you look closely, you can see a pair of my boxers in the back ground.  Oddly enough, the only time I can get pictures of her is when she's staying put, which is often, but she's just always sleeping.  No action shots, rarely anything with her eyes open.

Incidentally, she also has a habit of sleeping with one arm straight out in the air.

Was wondering how you guys felt about catnip and how much is too much if I were to give her some raw.  I put some in cat toys from time to time, and she seems to enjoy it, but I was thinking about growing a plant for her.

One last thing.  Every time I try to post a pic through the picture buttons on the WYSIWYG interface, it fails miserably.  I put in a URL, I click, it goes nowhere.  But when I put in raw HTML, it works.  Any ideas what's going on?

That sounds about right :) I had a cat once that sat there and 'played' with a moth for at least an hour. I don't know that she ever really killed it, just wounded it enough so it would keep moving.
