(The Atlantic Wire)   There's a real brouhaha brewing over Justice Scalia's use of the term "argle-bargle" in opinion yesterday that could turn into a foo-fraw, or even become a full-fledged donnybrook   (theatlanticwire.com) divider line 73

This reminds me... Is fussbudget a real word?  My wife uses it all the time and I tell her it's hogwash.  I then made up a similar word that makes infinitely more sense- "fussbucket".  Every time my sun is acting up in front of her I ask him why he's being such a fussbucket, just to piss her off.  He's a bucket-full of fuss... not really sure WTF fussbudget is supposed to mean anyway.

Scalia is an asshole and a true "judicial activist" of the worst kind, and I would shed no tears if he choked on his linguini and keeled over dead tomorrow.  But one thing you really can't properly criticize him on is his writing ability or his use of language.  He's actually one the best writers that's been on the court in decades.  Unfortunately, the content of what he writes tends to be horseshiat, but he at least expresses it very well.  If he uses any given term--including this one--it's a pretty safe bet that he's using it for a reason and he's using it appropriately.

fussbudget is a perfectly cromulent, if antique word.   Now there is one my wife's family uses, that I wouldn't even know how to spell that I'm reasonably certain they didn;t make up, becuase it sounds vaguely Cajun to me, phonetically it'd be spelled "Boody-hoood"

Idunno in the span of two days we got (on DOMA) """we have no power under the Constitution to invalidate this democratically adopted legislation'   less than 24 hours after he vote to invalidate a piece of democratically adopted legislation called the Voting Rights Act, that's not even inelegant that's utterly logically inconsistent

Applying my made-up armchair etymology degree...

I think in ye olde times, a budget was sort of a description of one's possessions. Kind of like an emotional wallet. :) It might have ALSO been physical, but I haven't seen any references to that. But have you heard the phrase, "to open your budget of woes" or "empty your budget of woes", etc?

So again, seriously guessing here, but I assume a fussbudget would be someone whose budget is basically full of fuss. Specifically, someone whose budget is full of nothing BUT fuss. That is, THEY are the ones creating the problem because they have no real problems bothering them. I think the modern version is drama queen.

Yeah yeah... maybe it was a carefully chosen term that he researched and employed for maximum pejorative effect... Or maybe Scalia just has a stupid infantile reaction to the idea of gays having sex because he's a childish contrarian jerkoff, so he used a word he heard his grandpa say once when he was 8 years old.

Can't we hate him for multiple reasons?  I mean, silly word usage isn't as high on the list as bigotry, but I'd say his hypocritical tendencies would be just cause as well.

Very insightful, thanks.  I still prefer fussbucket- the modern equivalent.  If it's not in the urban dictionary, I will shortly place it there.  Maybe one day it will achieve "cronuts" status.

Oh no! Scalia used a funny word in his dissent but let's ignore that he trots out the same bullshiat originalist interpretation, "I can read the minds of the Founding Fathers across space and time" routine every time the rest of the court does something he doesn't like.
