Indeed.

50 years ago, George Takei could never have mentioned how he loves black wang, for a myriad of reasons.

That's running on the huge assumption that future generations will study history

Just this March, for example, a young woman at an anti-same-sex-marriage rally in Washington was asked to write down, in her own words, why she was there. Her answer: "I can't see myself being with a woman. Eww."

LOL, wut? Was she under the impression that somehow a same-sex marriage ruling would have a clause that forced her to become a rug muncher, or something? Seriously, if all it was was that she personally couldn't imagine sex with another woman that was bugging her, why the fark did she feel the need to butt into other people's lives?

Woah hold on here.  You mean I DON'T have to become gay now?  I thought that's what this ruling meant, so my good buddy and I went ahead and got it over with last night and then again this morning.

Well...as long as the only thing they do is scream and cry about immorality then I really DON'T care. I just want to make sure nobody decides to do something foolish involving rental trucks, large amounts of fertilizer and a few barrels of kerosene.

Sodomy will always have an "ick" factor. Always.

As for normalization, one day we'll look back and wonder why people hated Furries. And it will certainly be a delight to push your shopping cart around the supermarket, manuevering around the Doms as they bring their slaves along on leashes to do the weekly shopping, and don't forget dealing with your boss on Tuesdays and Thurdays, when he dresses like a woman, he's more agreeable on *those* days...

Gays are every bit as evil and immoral as people with dyslexia, which is to say, no big deal, but I'm not looking forward to enduring everybody waving their kinks in my face all day long.....

Is that George R.R. Martin in the middle of that top picture?  Tell him to get back to work!

I do like the "ick" factor description that Takei talks about.  It impacts so many things in our lives, and not just marriage equality.  It is why I hate playing Zerg.

As author Ken O'Neill reminds us, the fact that you can't sell your daughter for three goats and a cow means we've already redefined marriage.

Well put. I will definitely use this one...

Don't worry libs. The DOMA ruling will now allow a same-sex couple to sue a religious institution who refuses to marry a homosexual couple.
Its always been about having the same benefits anyway.

Now here's hoping single people can get a tax break for not wanting to get married.

I'm personally enjoying this rant by Marvin Olasky, inventor of the term "compassionate conservatism" and one time trustee at my alma mater. He was an asshole when he was on the board of trustees at my college when I was a student and thus his rage is especially delicious. It's made all the more so because I know it would make him blow his top if he knew that an alumnus of my school worked to bring about this result he hates so much--that bit about how DOMA hurts kids in the majority opinion? I worked on a brief that argued just that point.

/oh wait, just remembered my alumni update that should run in the next issue of the alumni magazine talks about working on that
//wonder if I can get an entire evangelical denomination to flip their shiat

Whenever one group discriminates against another - keeping its members out of a club, a public facility or an institution - it often boils down to a visceral, negative response to something unfamiliar

Liberals have no problem discriminating against anyone that isn't a liberal.

Matter of fact, it's what they live for. Just look around.

The DOMA ruling will now allow a same-sex couple to sue a religious institution who refuses to marry a homosexual couple.

No. The ruling was about the federal definition of marriage. States still have their own constitutional right to define marriage, and First Amendment protections for religious freedom are still in place. Much to the dismay of liberals, who hate that freedom thingy for anyone that isn't a liberal.

The ick factor

You can't force everyone everywhere to applaud how beautiful two dudes swapping tongue and whatever else. That will never happen. It's none of your business how they feel about it, either.

Lesbians meanwhile, are cool because heterosexual men see the point of wanting a woman.

As long as they are hot. Not, those John Fogerty looking lesbians.

How any man can contemplate that after living with and subsequently hearing/hearing about the consequence of Indian food is beyond me.

"Ick" will always be around.  He said it himself, it's a visceral feeling.  We can't control it.

It's a tumor that makes us go ick when we see fat people, old people, sick people, or otherwise different people(race/sex/orientation/etc).  It was a boon in the past(evolutionarily speaking), but now it's problematic in society.

We can shrink the tumor to manageable levels by education through experience.  The opposite of indoctrination of our youth.

We can further manage it by analyzing our thoughts instead of rationalizing them, but that runs counter to our nature as well.  We've come to where we are because of faith in ourselves and ideals, that is also a mechanic that evolution granted us.(creationist lingo is merely figurative)

We'll always have ick.  The best we can do is try to limit how it affects our actions towards others, and try to help our children get exposure to variety.

Things are getting much better for us overall, but there is a tendency to "ick" right back, or "ick" at a different thing.  Neither helps the situation.

IMO, it would be great if we could learn to let someone stumble here and there, be an encouraging teacher, not  the teacher that WANTS to flunk each and every student for not fitting the mold perfectly.

2013-06-27 02:59:11 PM
If people were able to make decisions based on how ignorant and fearful they will look to a future observer, there would be no conservatives.

When people say that marriage between a man and woman is something that has been sacred for years and still is today, it sometimes reminds me of people who say Star Trek was the best show on television without question but forget Spock once mind melded with a robot.
In other words, I think we remember things in the past with a little bit of romance and tend to forget the parts that weren't so great.
