Rhinehart envisions Soylent as part of a future utopia in which no one has to grocery shop or scrub dishes, people spend less money and time on food, and everyone is healthy, having slurped down exactly the nutrients they need.

this sounds like hell.  good food is probably the most exciting thing on earth.  take that away, and fark existence.

I think this is a good idea, but won't be used the way people think.  Imagine the ease of getting this stuff to disaster stricken places, or being able to keep a bag of it on the shelf for emergencies. Also some of the benefits he lists could be due to him not eating all theadditives in processed food. Yes, switching to whole food is healthier, but you have to break the addiction first. Being limited to one thing would make this much easier. Finally, there are times when I have to eat, but am really am not in the mood to cook and don't really care what I eat. This way I'd be eating somethingnutritious rather than whatever junk is on the counter. (I'd find it much easier to get excited about cooking if I didn't have to do it all the time.)

But I've been assured by a large number of Fark nutrition experts that the only thing that matters is calories in and calories out, because conservation of energy.

I often eat not because I have to, but because I just know I should.  This would be great for those times.  Oh, and for comatose people who have feeding tubes.

Well that is the key for weight control, but weight control isn't the entire of nutrition or health.

Ultimately yeah. That is pretty obvious. Now what you eat can make the task of limiting your calories easier (insulin response etc) but the body doesn't exist outside of physics.

Gah.

Yes.  Things beyond calories in and calories out matter.  A lot.  For weight loss, nutrition, whatever.

It's almost as if the body is an immensely complicated machine whose every reaction isn't at 100% efficiency.

I don't think anyone disputes that at all. But the pure physics/chemistry aspect of food sets the baseline.  It may be dumb to think that eating 1000 k cals of sugar will cause the same response as something healthier, but it's just as stupid when people claim they can't lose weight due to genetics or because they can't avoid gluten or something.

It's almost like a discussion of weight loss and nutrition is very complicated and your viewpoint depends on the question being asked. ;)

Anyone else get this string right below the Redisplay/Refresh comments clicklink?

"u%#- $Id: post_form_new.tt 16933 2013-06-28 14:09:33Z mandrews $ TODO: This is a template component, so rename to .ttc. Also, it's no longer "new", so rename to just post_form.ttc. TODO: List out parameters that get passed into the template, for reference %] "

Looks like someone's behind in their code cleanup.

I hear that Soylent White is pretty good, but the taste varies from person to person.
