National Park Service spokeswoman Katie Lawhon apparently hasn't played a lot of baseball or chapped much wood.

Actually saw this statue A Lifetime Ago when on vacation with now-late parents, during centenary observation of That Late Conflict. Then, mighta been able to say who regimental commander was.

This means the Confederacy is a recognized independent nation and Rick Perry is Emperor of Greater Mexico.

We have military park quarters now? What's next, Apple store dimes?

For some reason I expected those statues to be bolted to their pedestals, not just standing on top of them. Still, that was a heck of a strong wind to blow over a bronze statue.

The fall from its base cracked the shoulder and bent the rifle

OK how many guys cringed when they read that.

I think I have picture of me in front of that statue as a kid. I need to get back up there one day.

I thought some old ordinance would have exploded and killed a tourist based on the headline.   Glad it's much more comedic an event.

That picture is hysterical. I can't help myself.

Am I the only one who sees this as metaphysically symbolic of the growing encroachment of the Old South, with the evisceration of the Voting Rights Act?

National Park quarters since we ran out of states and territories.

That's what I was thinking.

I was assuming some re-enactor suffered heat stroke and died.  I have friends from there and they tell stories about the string of EMT and fire vehicles there to help with all the 300+ lbs civil war buffs running around in wool uniforms in 90 degree heat.

Whew....  glad it wasn't the 118th's monument....   the famous 'Corn Exchange Regiment'.

btw... It wasn't Jenny Wades house...

/just sayin'

Whew! I was worried the article would be about somebody dying in the reenactment.

/Two of my brothers are there.

I live in town: this is a *huge* concern over the next two weeks.  It's the 150th anniversary, and as far as how many reenactors are showing up the answer appears to be "All of them".  We're a small town, with the usual small town roads, and a small hospital.  The town's been planning for this for years: there's no place to park so we'll be busing people in from remote locations, but traffic is still expected to jam the streets.  The hospital has booked some hotel rooms for emergency personnel: they don't expect people to be able to commute.  Emergency vehicles are going to have problems getting anywhere, and I know there are concerns about the cell phone network under the kind of load it's going to get.  Heat stroke is a serious concern: last Memorial Day I had a guy drop right in front of me- it was about 90 and you've got a ~80 year old dude marching in full wool uniform.

/About half the town is taking vacation next week: I'm heading for western NY

Ya, that tower got nuked in...what, the 90s? 80s? Wasn't there in 2005 when I went there.

\Wish I was going there next week

That monument is one of the most grandiose at Gettysburg. At Pickett's Charge the 72nd Pennsylvania was in back of the crucial focal point of the Confederate charge. Her sister regiments the 69th and 71st Pennsylvania were driven back and rallied on the 72nd. Then all three of the regiments refused to charge when ordered to. The statue portraying a soldier in hand to hand combat makes for an ironic joke. I understand it I guess, hard to raise the money for one showing them cringing away from the fight.
