Oh my.  That's a big hawk.  I've always wondered what it was like to touch a big hawk.  Can I pet it?  Wow, it's so soft on the outside but rigid underneath.  I can't get enough of this big hawk.  I could play with it all day long.

/read this out loud at work

3 stories...

Years ago, I was driving my work van on some backroad in Deleware.  I saw this bird coming directly at me.  Then I was surprised to not see it in my rearview mirrors.  So I pull over.  The bird was stuck, beak embedded, in the radiator.  Poor little guy was completely dead.

Last week, I was leaving work.  I had my window open.  A few pidgeons decided it was time to leave the ground and fly right in front of me.  Of of them almost flew directly INTO my car.  It only missed by a fraction of an inch.  And I actually heard an audible "Aaaaaahhhh!!!!!"  That was pretty damn funny.

I was driving the same van as the story above, in the pine barrens, NJ, a mourning dove hit the driver's side mirror and completely exploded.  The whole van was filled with feathers.  It's fortunate for me that it hit the mirror.  Because my arm was resting on the open window.  It almost certainly would have broken my arm.

One time I was driving to church and there were some birds on the road. They took off, but I guess one didn't fly high enough as I heard a thump on the top of my car.  Don't know if the bird survived or not.

That's the one I came for.  It took a guy evolved from birds to help Buck jump the shark.

So one time I'm driving down a rural road in Georgia and a hawk flies SMACK into my windshield. I was startled and pulled over to make sure the bird was okay. A woman pulls up behind me and we're both standing outside our cars looking at the stunned bird in a bush across the road.
"I'm glad you stopped, "she said. "If you didn't, I was going to call the police."
Like, what? I was aiming for the hawk?

Late to the party but gotta put this out here:
[Background: Years of work with wildlife centers, mostly in education, but very aware of what goes on with wildlife rehab]

This is sad but not that strange. Birds of prey - from tiny falcons to large eagles - are hit by cars with some regularity. It's a serious problem. One of the main factors is human litter. Person throws an apple core/banana peel/half-eaten Happy Meal out their window. Food attracts small critters; small critters attract larger predators; those attract apex predators and you have people hitting hawks, owls, bobcats, and the like. So please, please, PLEASE don't throw stuff from your car, even if it's "biodegradable".
Side-note: Also cigarette butts. A lot of people who are pretty conscientious about not littering have no problem flicking a butt from the window of their car. It is littering. It can start a fire. And -- just like the food products -- it does attract wildlife to the side of the road. Mice and birds will use filter material to line their nests.
