Rainboth's gun was a plastic toy.

The would-be burglar turned heels and ran out the patio door, with Rainboth in hot pursuit down the hallway of her Deerfield Beach apartment.

I don't think I'd press my luck.

SEEEEEE!  This is why kids that bring toy guns, pop tart shaped guns, hands in the shape of a gun to school need to be prosecuted at the full extent of the law!!!!!  Look at how dangerous and lethal that toy gun ended up being!  Think of the children!

Now that everybody and their brother knows she doesn't have a real firearm, she should probably go buy one.

Depends on what sound effects she was making.  "Pew pew pew!" isn't very scary.  But maybe she was going "Rat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat" and the burglar thought it was a machine gun.

Yea, don't know why she'd mess with success. Should have kept quiet.

See this why air soft sucks. It's not able to hurt a squirrel.
When we were kids we played war with bb guns. The rule was no more than 2 pumps.

though a joke, you have missed the mark.

this is a castle doctrine issue.  in all states you may defend yourself, however, you have a duty to avoid confrontation and to use force only if a retreat is impossible or unreasonable.  the castle doctrine is that there is no duty to retreat in your house, because there is no where to retreat to (it's a presumption that retreat was unreasonable, therefore you don't have to prove that retreat was unreasonable, because that fact is presumed. however, it can still be overcome, so you shouldn't shot people in the back who are running away).

stand your grand lightens the duty to retreat outside the home.

That settles it, then.  We'll let everyone have TOY guns.  They can all just scare each other and no one gets hurt.

She should also move out of that festering shiathole known as Tivoli apartments.  Thousands of apartments there and plenty of crime.

I recently bought a red ryder bb gun.

That would definetly put the masked intruder's eye out.

Yup. Precisely like Zimmerman did when he chased a kid for no reason and then shot and killed the kid. He was just defending himself, just like this woman.

How DARE she defend herself... I mean.. the cops could have stopped the guy before he finished.. they are only 5 or 10 minutes away.

This kind of thing adds credence to my theory about many unreported self defense cases.
A bunch of them are people flashing steel (or plastic, in this case) to discourage attacks.

/Granted that bluffing only works if people know better than to call the bluff.
/If anything we should discourage laws that force toy guns to look like toys.

My grandfather told us that he did the same thing as that scene, but since it was WW2 they used a different derogatory term.

"This is my Rifle, This is my gun! This is for [insert derogatory term for enemy here], This is for fun!"

Et cetera...

If she had been a little slower about dropping it when the deputies arrived, too late to prevent the crime, it would have been quite lethal. For her, and still may be. She has been outed as being disarmed and her address posted for all his "friends" to see. The reason it worked for her once is because it was completely possible that she did have a gun and in Florida she could have used it without first having to try to escape her own home. The common knowledge that there are plenty of actual gun owners is what protected her.

The deputies performed their actual jobs of Protecting society at large by catching the criminal and removing him from the streets but they didn't protect HER.

Yeah, because Martin instead of continuing to go home confronted Zimmerman and began bashing his head on the sidewalk. But I suppose that Zimmerman should have just let Martin beat his head in. The whole incident is tragic and full of dumbass moves on both parties. Zimmerman followed Martin, he probably shouldn't have done that. Martin attacked Zimmerman, he for sure shouldn't have done that. I always find it amazing that those bashing Zimmerman just gloss over or completely ignore the fact he was being attacked.

Ironically, the same people defending Martin for being unreasonably scrutinized for no reason are the same people who have no problem with the NSA undergoing massive surveillance "for the children".

Funny world.

It may work from time to time, but pulling a fake gun on someone with a real one will probably get you shot more often than it causes the burglar to run away shiatting pants.

A mosin nagant can be had for $150. That's toy prices. And you can mount a fun bayonet accessory on it as well.
