abhorrent1: WTF does she even do?
Cloudchaser Sakonige the Red Wolf: Please pardon my ignorance, but does the royal family have a purpose other than taking care of ceremonial things so the Prime Minister can concentrate on running the country?
seek3r: abhorrent1: WTF does she even do?Tourist attraction (that brings in a lot more than 60 mil)
meanmutton: In other countries, though, they have more power. For instance, in her capacity as the Queen of Canada she can dissolve Parliament. In fact, she (or, more specifically, her Governor General acting in her capacity) did that recently.
Psycat: Yes, but they don't tell you that the Queen only gets to murder 10 random peasants a year instead of the previous 12.
I'm no expert but...: meanmutton: In other countries, though, they have more power. For instance, in her capacity as the Queen of Canada she can dissolve Parliament. unlikely: Coincidentally I also got a 5% raise.Which brings my salary up to roughly enough to pay rent and bills and still eat on weekends.Woo!
ecl: F*cking crazy world we live in. It's hard to believe there is still royalty.
brantgoose: Most of that money goes to salaries and wages for the staff of the Royal Palaces and to upkeep, entertainment costs, etc. The Royal Palaces, yacht, etc., are techncally owned by the Crown, which is to say, the State (and not the Monarch) so it's money the Government is paying for the upkeep of Government property and for performing Government business, such as playing host to foreign dignataries. Her real "take home" salary is either very small by the standards of heads of other multinational corporations or non-existant.She's been "voluntarily" paying taxes on her real personal and family income for decades. She remains one of the richest women in the world due to canny investments by Queen Victoria on the advice of some of the most successful investors of her time. These included a number of social-climbing Jewish millionaires, hence the strong connection between the Royal Family and Jews in the grimey little minds of anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists and fascists. The other people on the Civil List (the minor royals) are more like salaried employees, especially if their royal duties are slight. Their "salaries" are no more than mere upper-class or upper-middle class. Some of them are very rich (the Prince of Wales has extensive estates) but the Royal Family quickly tapers off into the merely rich or well-to-do. The Middletons are richer than most of the Royals apart from the public face of the "firm" as the "Royalties" call themselves. The Line of Succession stops at No. 22. No. 23 was (possibly still is) a disk jockey in the US. He'd be retired by now, possibly very elderly. One of the families closely related to the Crown and thus with a member or two on the Line of Succession, has no titles and while they are aristocrats of birth and ancestry, make their living selling apples. They are more like rich farmers than your idea of nobility.$60 million is a rather small sum given the many people who draw their salares and wages from it, the amount of land, ed ...
rubi_con_man: Yes, but she's really taking a massive loss ... every year ...since the 19th century.200 million in revenue from their lands - 40 million for their salary = 160 million dollars.http://youtu.be/bhyYgnhhKFw
puddleonfire: And she spends it on WHAT?!

Wikipedia says that it's "conventionally" at the request of the Prime Minister. I have no idea what that means.
