BS. The case of OMG v WTF clearly established that the use of LOL JK means the threats were not intended to be carried out.

'Justin was the kind of kid who didn't read the newspaper. He didn't watch television. He wasn't aware of current events.

So he was completely uneducated about the world around him. That's some great parenting Lou.

18 years old.  Old enough to be responsible for his stupid assed actions.

8 years is probably a bit excessive.  I'd vote for time served plus a couple of years of probation.

Better arrest everybody who has ever written a novel or screen play that has violence in it.

I don't know why it still surprises me that people feel the need to post anything in Facebook that is beyond bland safe postings. I was gonna make a FB post about Wendy Davis but I figured why stir up the pot? FB is for connections, not to be your personal running diary.

Arrested? Fine. In jail since FEBRUARY? Facing EIGHT YEARS? Nice land of the free you've got there, America.

Awww...Do you really need someone to explain to you the difference between posting shiat online as a representation of your opinions vs. an author or screenwriter penning a piece of work?

Seriously. If the point were Nagasaki and you were Fat Man, you would have landed somewhere in South Africa.

Zero Tolerance is supreme bullshiat. That being said, there's just some shiat you DON'T post on a social media site, especially one that is actively monitored by law enforcement. If this exchange had taken place via e-mails or even a chat service like AIM or something, there would be no story. Turns out when you post extremely inflammatory shiat where the public can read it, the public might ACTUALLY read it. 8 years? No way that sticks unless they uncover real plans to shoot up a school.

/even if this dude was released today, you better believe he won't be posting shiat like that ever again

He's been in jail since February? What a farked up society we have. Taken in context you can pretty well determine it's a joke. But okay, we want to be extra positive, so how about we check if this kid has had any history of mental problems or violent behavior and if it comes out clean we send him back home in time for lunch with a stern warning not to be an idiot online?

2013-06-27 01:38:02 PM
Retarded people taking things out of context, any sane reader would see the argument at hand and know.

Typically, under the law, there needs to be some reasonable cause for worry, such as a clear ability to carry out the "threat".

Sure, investigate, read the facebook page.  See there was a video game based argument and *gasp* sarcasm was used making light of the retarded argument that video games cause violence.  Maybe have a talk with the parents and kid. Close case.

Paranoia is rampant in this country.  When it is found that irrational people become unreasonably fearful they should be written off like any other crazy.

But now that it's made national news, what message does that send to actual violent crazy people?  Don't warn people, just do it.

Yeah, let's teach them how to achieve their goals instead of quietly observing and investigating and arresting only when there's probable cause.

"only 2 months after Sandy hook"?

Jesus.  Leno and his counterparts only took days to make jokes.

What I think would be funny, is if a bunch of people started posting something similar(an obvious argument + sarcasm), hell, even get someone to tip off the cops.

It would shed some light on the paranoia+police state thing we have going on.

People simply shouldn't get arrested for thoughtless behavior, not all stupidity is criminal.

/Hell , I'd sign up for such a campaign, but gimme a heads up so I can get rid of all my old torrents and goat porn selfies though

skinink: " I don't know why it still surprises me that people feel the need to post anything in Facebook that is beyond bland safe postings."

Probably because they're they kind of people who don't read the newspaper, or watch television or keep up with current events.
So they don't realize that these things (predictably) backfire and cause problems.

2013-06-27 02:30:06 PM
I'm going to beat everyone on this stupid planet to death with a mildly rancid herring, just because this story makes me soooooooooo angry.
Then I'm going to sell their slightly fishy still beating hearts on E-bay, right back to them, making a huge profit!

Lol! Just kidding.

I'm actually going to use a rubber chicken!

Their context was the same as this kids context.  The quality of the joke is immaterial(they were all bad).  There was no threat, only a mock statement with obvious disclaimers present.

Wouldn't it be funny if you were raped by like 5 guys?

We're all getting dumber, aren't we?  Any farkwad with a few correctly firing neurons would have known that this guy was joking.  Sure, it wasn't really funny, and was in extremely bad taste, yet, the fact remains, it was a joke.  END OF STORY.  The most the local officials should have done is to send an officer by to let the stupid teen know that an overly concerned canadian lady who obviously failed Internet 101 by not knowing the meaning of LOL and JK misunderstood his post, and he would be wise to remember in the future that everyone can read Facebook, and not everyone knows when your kidding.

Regardless the explanation, I still contend that we are all degenerating in to a nation of reactionary intolerant mouth breathers, and there is no end in sight.

I have a theory that all this reactionary business is a symptom of the "old generation" being systematically removed from power. Marijuana is getting legalized slowly but surely, gay marriage is in full swing (no pun intended), the influence of religion over society is receding faster than Donald Trump's hairline, and the silent minorities are no longer silent nor the minority. It's the last desperate thrashes of an entire generation drowning in Progress. And I can't wait 'til the bubbles stop.

A lot of it is from the other end of the stick as well.

We all think we're "right", and everyone should conform to us.  Prejudice(in the classic "premature judging" sense) causes us to vilify others without regard for rational logic or facts.

Meh, I just posted this in another thread, because it really is a universal argument that is more and more applicable in the face of the increasing intolerance.

IMO, it would be great if we could learn to let someone stumble here and there, be an encouraging teacher, not  the teacher that WANTS to flunk each and every student for not fitting the mold perfectly.

How many people have faced jail over war crimes recently?
