Story does not list the BS reason they'll be using to avoid paying out.
I wonder what they'll go with.

To be fair, if they missed they got Kings season tickets for 2013-14 And 2014-15. Lesser of two evils.

5 sets of season tickets for a year, no cost to the Kings and great PR. they won't try to get out of the deal, well the fans might after the first two weeks of the season

Why not pay up?  These guys will show up and spend a boatload on beer and food.  Then next year maybe they'll re-up.

Not one used anything approaching proper shooting form.

Pretty obnoxious snark there.  You try using "proper shooting form" from midcourt.  Nice arc, great backspin, and landing ten feet short of the basket.

A season ticket package for the kings is what, $300 a year?

Nice idea...As someone who has been in ticketing for a sports franchise, you end up with plenty of scattered singles throughout the venue. I am sure they have at least five nose bleed singles that would not sell for all but the biggest games of the year. Great publicity for the club!

Do they get corndogs?

5 doesn't actually sound like that many unless they only had about 10 people show up for this thing. I'm guessing it wasn't open to the general public like they're kind of suggesting.

It's the Sacremento Kings.  Did they really win?

Lost Thought 00: A season ticket package for the kings is what, $300 a year?

They would have to pay me more than that...

This is the Kings.  These days they probably have a whole lot of tickets that wouldn't sell for all but the biggest opponents of the year.  Frankly, it's not a bad way to get some different fans in the building.  You know they're not going to go the entire season without buying some food, drinks, maybe some stuff from the team shop in the building, and they're going to end up giving some games away to friends.

Doing this sort of thing is absolutely the kind of thing new ownership should be doing too.  Get the team name out there in a positive light, start upgrading the in-arena experience for the fans (because it's going to take a few years for the team to be upgraded in all likelihood) and do some cheap ticket gimmicks and cheap food gimmicks.  Bring back past stars for their own special nights over the next few years (with bobbleheads or statue giveaways of course).  Just get bodies in the arena, show them a good time, connect them when the team was good and the arena was sold out (which wasn't really that long ago) and make them want to come back.

For years, the Kings used to have a promotion with a local Ford dealer where they would randomly pick one fan to take a half-court shot at halftime, and if they made the shot they would win a new Ford Explorer. I went to maybe 6 games during that era, and twice in those 6 games the guys they picked hit the shot and won the car. It's not unheard of.

Pretty much how the Carolina Hurricanes done it with the NHL.  Their fanbase is almost entirely based around them being pretty likeable guys that are active in the community, which sells well in North Carolina.  We tailgate for hockey the way we do for college football, and the environment in the stadium is great.  They are just now starting to put real effort into getting spending enough to build real talent, but they bought the fans with shameless pandering while the team still needed stars, and it seems to have worked for us.

This. Dude who wrote TFA obviously does not play basketball.

For the record, these were people who had already placed their non-refundable deposit on season tickets and were there to select their seats. The team is genuinely giving away money there would have otherwise received. Of course, they will get the parking, concessions, apparel revenue, but more importantly lots of goodwill and loyalty from these 5 and their families/friends. They might even sell five extra season tickets or get this money back when these people spend more than they otherwise would have on concessions, similar to how people spend an additional (roughly) 40% when redeeming a gift card.

Also, #3 had the most awkward celebratory high 5/hug confusion.

This is the yin-yang of the internet: You realize you're not as uniquely clever as you thought you were. It hurts, but ultimately is good for you and everyone else in that it helps raise the quality of discourse.
