Probation?! For 8,000 plants?! I'd have been less surprised if he'd been sentenced to 8 million years in the pokey.

This from the judge:  "It's a bad thing that's happened to you, but you've lived a good life," stated Friedman.

Or,...did he get 2 years probation because he's a cancer patient and as a probationer, he'd be responsible for his own medical care? Either way, good for him.

Here in PA it's a 1 year mandatory minimum for 10 plants or more.  Of course, logically even probation is ridiculous.  It's patently absurd to attempt to prohibit a plant.

Are coca plants illegal?

Especially as a schedule 1 narcotic.

I_C_Weener:
Are coca plants illegal?

I don't know, but if they are, they shouldn't be.  If you want to process your own cocaine from them for personal use, go for it.  Ergot fungus isn't illegal, or particularly attractive unless you are looking to make LSD.  Sassafras oil can make MDMA.  Numerous plants contain DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelic compounds out there.

Especially when freaking COCAINE is schedule 2.  Absolutely absurd.

When you absolutely, positively got to kill every motherfarking crow in the field, accept no substitutes.

"This is one that most screams out: This man deserves a break," said U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman, according to the Associated Press.

Twenty bucks says if some poor kid was busted with an ounce that he purchased from this farmer (or whomever this farmer is supplying), he'd be facing time from this judge.

Why would a farmer grow plants in pots?

Probation for 8,000 pot plants? This is a farmer who knows where the bodies are buried.

Seems like this is why the medical marijuana things sucks.  Just frickin' legalize it so 8,000 pot plants isn't "potentially life in prison" but rather "small family farm".

Corn subsidies; but maybe he had a change of heart and didn't want to contribute to the obesity epidemic.

Patented  plants are prohibited without paying the licensing fee.

In another article the state police are all upset at the sentence:

"It's marijuana, and it's being grown for profit. That's the way we look at it."

See, law enforcement doesn't actually care about who uses drugs or what the effects are - they care that someone is making a profit.

Of course they are because the individuals who are making those profits often are resorting to violence to keep them.

No, they just aren't paying taxes.  If pot was harmful they wouldn't be in such a rush to legalize it, but there's money to be made which is why the state gov;ts are all tacking in that direction.  Nice job with the Reefer Madness soundbite though.

What does pot's harms have to do with the drug cartels murdering people in order to keep selling it?

Nothing.  It's the illegality that causes murders.

There's a solution.  Study it out.

That's exactly my point.  Apparently, pointing out that its illegality causes violent gangs to kill in order to protect its profits is "Reefer Madness" or something.
