Bicycle hate threads are the best.  We should have a word for the asshat bicyclists, you know who I mean.  Those guys.

Most people don't mind hating on this kind of idiot.  Hope he has to pay for every dent, ding, and scratch he caused to the car.
Let's be careful not use the guy from TFA as a stereotype though, or I'll be forced to use this asshat as a stereotype.

Bicycles don't have to stop at stop signs or red lights in Idaho, although they are supposed to slow down and make sure the intersection is clear, a detail frequently overlooked by cyclists.

They can also ride on sidewalks here, scaring the poop out of pedestrians.

staplermofo: We should have a word for the asshat bicyclists

People can ride bicycles. They're just people on bicycles. No word required.

Any self identified "cyclist", though, that group contains the guys who try to get themselves killed by violating traffic laws and common sense who then punch the cars of drivers who just saved their asshole lives. So we should just call assholes on bikes "cyclists" and encourage sane people who are really into bike riding to just call themselves "Steve" or "Andrea" or whatever their name is.

Platform pedals, jeans, dark t-shirt, cheap bike, dirty-ass chain.  The guy in TFA would probably self-identify as "guy on bike" and not "cyclist".

I see as many cyclists as cars blowing through stop signs around here. Other day they set up a trap with a cruiser and motorcycle cop that trapped some asshole (in a car.) I wanted to wave at the moto cop, something about a four-way intersection is especially optional to many drivers in the Seattle 'burbs. Bad cyclists AND bad drivers suck.

By the way I was once hit by a bicyclist while driving in my car.

I was driving through a green light and he hit the side of my car and, denting the side of my car, flipped over my hood and took off running.

Yes my car was actually hit and run by a bicyclist.

It's pretty well understood that accidents like this are a result of cagers not paying attention to the road.

I think stop signs were put there to protect people from cars not from bikes. Never seen a need for a stop sign on a bike path. Bikes don't really move that fast.

/saw this happen once: a cyclist blew through a stop sign and got hit by the car in front of me. Scary as shiat.

this used to happen in our college town a lot, followed by the DA pressing all sorts of felony charges on the car drivers regardless of if any laws were broken, followed by very high 'municipal fines' (which are apparently not able to be challenged in any court) levied if and when the drivers were not convicted criminally.
this was apparently supposed to make car drivers aware of bicyclists to prevent accidents, knowing their life was pretty much over if they were in an accident with one.

accidents and bicycle deaths went -up- dramatically, mainly due to bicyclists going completely nuts and ignoring all traffic laws due to their newfound immunity. a few even took to riding the wrong way up the main road in front of the college to make all the cars pull over for laughs.

then we got a smart DA. cops went nuts ticketing bikers the first week or two of every semester so new students got the point.
bike deaths pretty well stopped after that.

The Netherlands has some of the most protective biker rules in the world. Even there bikers have limits, and have to follow traffic laws.

Did your sister lose her leg in an accident caused by the driver? Then I feel for her, she didn't deserve it. Prosecute that driver, sue him for every cent he has.

Or did your sister lose her leg in an accident like this asshat? Did she blow through a stop sign and then get hit? Then oh well. If she'd obeyed the traffic laws, those that pertain to both bikes and cars, maybe she'd still have her leg. Sorry.

I'm fat and lazy, and can average 8 MPH biking on the roads (which means I'm probably biking at 12-15 because of lights, stop signs, breaks due to being fat and lazy with a range of about 4 miles before I have to stop and sit down, etc).

12-15 MPH is fast enough that you can't stop on a dime, can shoot out into the intersection fast enough that cars can't see you coming, and can't look both ways at the intersection to see if anyone's coming while still going at speed.  I can't even imagine being one of the hardcore bikers going 25-30 on surface streets and 45-50 coming down from the pass.  You're functionally an invisible car with no safety equipment at that point.

/Treats Stop signs as exceedingly hard yields and lights as lights.

About a month ago I was on a bike ride and saw a driver blow through an all-way stop sign. Not even a rolling stop, just went through the intersection as if it didn't exist.

And yes, I stopped when I came to a full stop at the intersection on my bike.

that has happened to me as well. twice actually, though not as dramatically either time - they just bounced off.

in one of them, the guy and his buddy tried to start a fight, then when i obliged pussied out and called the cops and wanted me arrested. cops had a little chat with them about the nature of stop signs.

As a law-abiding cyclist, I despise it when other cyclists break traffic laws, blowing through stop signs and red lights.

Worst of all, they give the impression to drivers that we're unpredictable and a nuisance. It certainly doesn't breed respect amongst them and the idea that the roads are to be shared.

Bicycle Hate!  I could go on and on!

I have to start by saying that I really don't have a problem with people who own and ride bicycles. The purchase and recreational use of a bicycle (an old school ten speed, not one of those newfangled mountain bikes) is on my personal list of things to do. (Along with getting a pilot's license and taking up the guitar again.)

But as someone who was a professional driver I could go on and on about the narcissistic assholes who engage in abusive behavior with their very expensive bicycles on the public streets.

When I was doing pizza delivery in South Minneapolis I found that the fastest route from the store to a certain area was a road running along the west bank of the Mississippi River. Unless, of course, one or more bicyclists, in their special bicyclist clothes*, decided to ride in the street instead of the nicely paved and specially constructed bicycle path that was just off of and running parallel to the road.

And then there are the assholes who ride side by side on the public streets and thus making it impossible to pass the group without going into the opposite lane. Imagine how much fun this is when there is oncoming traffic. Of course if you live in an area with a significant "Progressive" population you don't have to imagine it.

And then there are those obviously superior individuals who feel that they don't have to comply with the traffic signals or otherwise pay attention to what's ahead of them. <a data-cke-saved-href="Never mind the obviously predictable results.

I used to be a "cyclist" before all this critical mass BS started - then I bought a harley instead :P  (I've refused to own a car for many years)

I've been hit while on a bicycle three times - two by people coming into the bike lane, one by someone running a stop sign where I didn't have one.  In that one, I was going downhill on Genesee in San Diego - I was fairly hardcore, would tend to average somwhere around 25 or whatever, but on a downhill like that I could easily hit almost 50 just for grins and giggles.  That day was one of those such days, where I was feeling dumb and indestructible.  I wasn't nearly as impervious as I thought ;)  But that didn't stop me from using a bicycle for every single bit of my transportation for years after.  She was at fault for running a stop sign, I was at fault for being an idiot.  Life moved on, lesson learned.

It wasn't until this wave of entitled, obnoxious, assholes that INTENTIONALLY get in people's way, intentionally piss people off, etc, that I sold my bicycle.  I didn't want to be associated with those people.

//cool story bro!
