Can we clone it?

Wow, a Methuselah rookie card! And Joseph of Arimathea!

Is the information from a DNA sequencing sufficient that a proper DNA molecule could be synthesized and swapped with the DNA in a modern horse zygote to produce a clone?

I just want to know if it's tasty. If it is, then please clone it -- and fire up the grill.

Can this be used to create tiny giraffes?

Wut? How is figuring out how to do all this shiat "wasting money"?

Since they think based on their results that the time period of the common ancestor of the equid family is off by a few million years, all science is therefore wrong and Genesis is automatically true.

/I think that's how they do it

THIS is a waste of money! And Jebus H Christ, there's an entire "field" of them wasting money!

"Beyond its implications for equine evolution, the study pushes the envelope for ancient DNA research, Willerslev says. "It was not that long ago that people in the field of ancient DNA would have said you can't retrieve data from something this old, but here we have a whole genome."

"Lambert agrees that the team's work creates new possibilities for DNA research, including applying the technique to ancient human fossils to gain a clearer picture of human evolution. "This study will encourage people to say, 'Maybe we should give this a go,' " he says. "It makes you wonder if a million-year-old genome would be possible."
And the sole purpose of  wasting this money seems to be to get  more people to waste more money!

Yeah! Fark abstract research!

This dude has an amazing track record of finding unbelievably old, DNA-yielding fossils no matter where he goes.

Man, that must be a lot of work. A lot more than, say, just getting the horse genome and scattering a couple of hundred thousand silent mutations in, etc.

By the way, I am in the field of personal genetics. For a mere $50, I'll sequence your DNA. And the beauty of it is...I don't even need your DNA sample to do it.

No, the average coverage is only about 1.12X, not all of the genome is covered, and there is a high level of DNA damage due to  post-mortem deamination of cytosine (resulting in an excess of C>T and G>A mis-incorporation errors during sequencing). Even if that was not the case, I doubt that we will be seeing entire synthetic genomes for vertebrates anytime soon.

DNA is uselees. Can you feed people with DNA? No. They should spend their effort on genetics, which is practical science

40,000 years of human agricultural development say up your nose with a rubber hose, Mr LewDux.

Sorry, that's just my nasty disposition. I'm sure it can be bred out in time.

Your quoted text makes it sound very interesting and worthwhile.

Couldn't agree more.
