Confabulat: So what do they think is going to happen exactly? Meteors and hellfire? God turning his back on the USA? Children growing up learning to accept homosexuality as normal?

What's the terrifying outcome again?

Nothing. Their fear is that legal recognition of same-sex unions will cause no harm at all, and that the public at large will recognize that the expressed concerns of same-sex marriage opponents are at best delusions and at worst willful lies. Rejected as delusional or dishonest, those opponents will lose their credibility, and they will witness the loss of their influence, and their ability to hold a fearful audience in sway, and thus they will lose the support through which they receive substantial monetary donations and political power. In short, they will be exposed as frauds, and they will lose the empires on which their fraud has been built.

That is the terrifying outcome.

So, yeah, don't get gay married. Belong to a church that doesn't marry gay couples. There's nothing to prevent you from doing either of those things. That's been the point all along. For you, nothing changes. For families made up of a gay couple and/or their children? They now have some defense against people like you.

Now he can rally his dumbfark supporters to give him even more money to keep on fighting.

i'm ok with the GOP maintaining control of regional legislatures.  they're slipping backwards and eventually that's ALL they'll be - a regional party without much (if any) national influence.

Sucks if you live in one of those states, though. Not everyone can just pack up and move, and fighting them in the state legislature is a full-time-plus battle that drains away resources better spent a jillion other ways.

Democracy's messy, I know.  Still seems like there should be some kind of penalty for those who go out of their way to make things worse.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that God is over all of that Old Testament bullshiat. Besides, this really just covers the CIVIL part of marriage, they can keep denying them the "God" part.

As long as the people have the right to get married, that's all that matters, and I think the occasional guy couple that tries to force a church to download it are just being assholes anyway. The rights are what matters, why should they want to get married at a church that despises them anyway? There are plenty of other options that don't involve the J.P.

The introduction of Gay Marriage is going to require a lot of laws to be rewritten though. Everything related to marriage and divorce that mentions 'man, woman, husband and wife' needs to be made gender neutral, and fast. Otherwise divorces and wills are gonna get real confused real quick.

I need last thing the feds have to do here: There has to be some federal provision for couples married in states allowing guy marriage if something happens in another state. Whether it's hospital visitation, alimony/palimony issues, or next of kin situations, the non gay marriage states have to respect these marriages to at least some extent. Not allowing it is one thing, but denying them the rights that go along with a marriage because they don't condone that marriage, even though it is legal would be bullshiat. I'm sure they have a policy in place when someone gets married in a state where the age of consent is low and then moves to one where it's higher, it's not like the marriage is voided and the people are committing statutory rape the second they cross the border, same thing needs to happen for gay marriage, and the feds needn't make the law.

NOM should be counting their blessings. Because if Prop 8 had been considered, it might have been found unconstitutional, and probably would have given Kennedy's vote against DOMA. And said ruling would have had effect in every jurisdiction in America, making laws against gay marriage unconstitutional all over the U.S. In keeping with procedural tradition, the SCOTUS saved anti-gay marriage advocates an even bigger defeat.

Lackofname: Prof. Ann Marion: Lackofname: For Europe permitting all those gays to marry, and being so heathen, God sure has punished them with... um... hm.

Europeans.  He punished them with Europeans.

So, then God has punished the US by imposing Texas on us?

... I can see that.

My own personal summation on the birth of Texas:  A bunch of Southern assholes move into Mexican territory after promising to not try and take up efforts to install slavery(see those Mexicans had already outlawed slavery in their own country.)  Those new Mexican citizens promptly started up a resistance movement against the Mexican government in their own country, arming themselves with military-grade armaments(cannons and such) in spite of the government telling them to stop.  Most of those armaments came from slave-holding states in the US.

They waged a revolution in order to seize the territory for themselves and to install slavery in Texas.  They won their war catching the Mexican General Santa Ana while he was resting in the afternoon with the rest of his troops at San Jacinto. This was the ONLY victory of that revolution for the Texans.

The Texans then spent the next 10 years or so, begging the US to take them in before Santa Ana returned with his army and burned it all down.

Fun fact: Sam Houston, the 'father of Texas' quit the state Congress and cursed his comrades afterward when they seceded from the union after he'd worked so hard to get them in.
