So what do they think is going to happen exactly? Meteors and hellfire? God turning his back on the USA? Children growing up learning to accept homosexuality as normal?

What's the terrifying outcome again?

That's a good point. I think he seriously wanted this to happen. This is his gravy train, and he can continue to ride it as long as he keeps losing, because he's "fighting the good fight". If they had upheld DOMA and said the USA would never allow gay marriage, he'd be out of a job now.

Now he can rally his dumbfark supporters to give him even more money to keep on fighting.

"The Supreme Court's holding that proponents of an initiative had no legal right to appeal ignores California law and rewards corrupt politicians for abandoning their duty to defend traditional marriage laws.

I just love how activists can take the most vanilla procedural ruling and turn it into the moral outrage of the century.

This was an easy question. It is first year civil procedure for chrissake. This is the equivalent of declaring a holy war when you find out the DMV is closed on Saturdays.

So, yeah, don't get gay married. Belong to a church that doesn't marry gay couples. There's nothing to prevent you from doing either of those things. That's been the point all along. For you, nothing changes. For families made up of a gay couple and/or their children? They now have some defense against people like you.

This is important to point out.  Whatever you think of the ruling, or Citizen's United for that matter, the issue is finished because the Supreme Court has ruled.  It may not be the right ruling depending on your point of view, but it is the ruling.

Nothing. Their fear is that legal recognition of same-sex unions will cause no harm at all, and that the public at large will recognize that the expressed concerns of same-sex marriage opponents are at best delusions and at worst willful lies. Rejected as delusional or dishonest, those opponents will lose their credibility, and they will witness the loss of their influence, and their ability to hold a fearful audience in sway, and thus they will lose the support through which they receive substantial monetary donations and political power. Sucks if you live in one of those states, though. Not everyone can just pack up and move, and fighting them in the state legislature is a full-time-plus battle that drains away resources better spent a jillion other ways.

My own personal summation on the birth of Texas:  A bunch of Southern assholes move into Mexican territory after promising to not try and take up efforts to install slavery(see those Mexicans had already outlawed slavery in their own country.)  Those new Mexican citizens promptly started up a resistance movement against the Mexican government in their own country, arming themselves with military-grade armaments(cannons and such) in spite of the government telling them to stop.  Most of those armaments came from slave-holding states in the US.

They waged a revolution in order to seize the territory for themselves and to install slavery in Texas.  They won their war catching the Mexican General Santa Ana while he was resting in the afternoon with the rest of his troops at San Jacinto. This was the ONLY victory of that revolution for the Texans.

The Texans then spent the next 10 years or so, begging the US to take them in before Santa Ana returned with his army and burned it all down.

Fun fact: Sam Houston, the 'father of Texas' quit the state Congress and cursed his comrades afterward when they seceded from the union after he'd worked so hard to get them in.

In short, they will be exposed as frauds, and they will lose the empires on which their fraud has been built.

That is the terrifying outcome.

NOM should be counting their blessings. Because if Prop 8 had been considered, it might have been found unconstitutional, and probably would have given Kennedy's vote against DOMA. And said ruling would have had effect in every jurisdiction in America, making laws against gay marriage unconstitutional all over the U.S. In keeping with procedural tradition, the SCOTUS saved anti-gay marriage advocates an even bigger defeat.

I did address the loss of monetary contributions. Ultimately, yes, many opponents of same-sex marriage fear that the exposure of their cause as fraudulent will cause them to lose a source of income.

The was a post in here yesterday trying to link storms and droughts to guy marriage decisions made in April, saying that the storms happened the very next month.

If it was trolling, it's the best I've ever seen, nothing truly inflammatory, stated like a true recitation of the 'facts' of correlation being equal to causation. And none of the Pat Robertson type theatrics, either.

This person was dead serious.

Now one of the theories about how acceptance seems to be picking up speed is that people are seeing that storms of fire and brimstone AREN'T occurring, so they're taking more chances. I think it's because the new generation of Right Wing voters aren't quite the bigoted assholes their parents were, they've known guy people their whole lives, and have no problems with them. Obviously this isn't 100‰, but I think we're going to see a more normal type of Republican slowly taking over, one that will make this whole 'being an Independent' thing a while lot easier, since I've pretty much run out of Republicans and Republican causes I can support at the present time. It gets really hard when I have a choice between supporting a Democrat or Democrat cause that I don't like, or supporting someone from the Obstructionist Party. I end up not voting at all, which is about as useful as tits on a fish.

Well, until "holy God" shows up and tells us we are wrong, I'm just going to keep on not minding that gay people can get the same rights as straight people.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that God is over all of that Old Testament bullshiat. Besides, this really just covers the CIVIL part of marriage, they can keep denying them the "God" part.

As long as the people have the right to get married, that's all that matters, and I think the occasional guy couple that tries to force a church to download it are just being assholes anyway. The rights are what matters, why should they want to get married at a church that despises them anyway? There are plenty of other options that don't involve the J.P.

The introduction of Gay Marriage is going to require a lot of laws to be rewritten though. Everything related to marriage and divorce that mentions 'man, woman, husband and wife' needs to be made gender neutral, and fast. Otherwise divorces and wills are gonna get real confused real quick.

I need last thing the feds have to do here: There has to be some federal provision for couples married in states allowing guy marriage if something happens in another state. Whether it's hospital visitation, alimony/palimony issues, or next of kin situations, the non gay marriage states have to respect these marriages to at least some extent. Not allowing it is one thing, but denying them the rights that go along with a marriage because they don't condone that marriage, even though it is legal would be bullshiat. I'm sure they have a policy in place when someone gets married in a state where the age of consent is low and then moves to one where it's higher, it's not like the marriage is voided and the people are committing statutory rape the second they cross the border, same thing needs to happen for gay marriage, and the feds needn't make the law.

Everything related to marriage and divorce that mentions 'man, woman, husband and wife' needs to be made gender neutral, and fast. Otherwise divorces and wills are gonna get real confused real quick.

There are federal regulations, mostly regarding benefits, that will have to be re-issued, but wrt estates and divorces, those are state matters; the feds have nothing to do with those.

Mikey1969: I need last thing the feds have to do here: There has to be some federal provision for couples married in states allowing guy marriage if something happens in another state.

Reciprocity has been a traditional courtesy amongst the states, but that doesn't mean it's required of them. That's actually the issue at hand: can the decision of one state force another state to make that same decision. Of course, reciprocity has tended to involve a lot less polarizing matters like certain types of licenses and certifications (the driver's license is the most familiar).

Well, the Netherlands did have a chilly spring.

I'll say. It's been rainy all week.

What's the terrifying outcome again?

Evidence their planned theocracy isn't likely to happen?

Hmm... I am still a bit concerned. Abortion was considered settled (even if loathed) by conservatives in the 90's. And then the slow response culminating in apeshiat actions in the state legislatures has now left abortion under heavy attack.

Gay marriage as a controversy is not going to go away. To the extent that the Republican party remains in its current form, gay marriage opponents are betting that the political tide will change for unrelated reasons and opportunities will rise again to cram these nonsensical arguments of morality down the throats of a populace who does not care to hear them.

/if you're against abortion, don't get one (oh wait, they still do)
//if you're against gay marriage, don't have one or perform one
///don't tell the rest of us how to live our lives through your morality

But what if a those politicians and preachers had to marry their rent boys? Can't you see why they're scared?

MisterEZ: All2morrowsparTs: You be tollin'

Ok, let me rephrase that. Can someone with a grasp of the English language please explain to me again why it's wrong to round up all the christians and march them into ovens.

Because then we would be no better than they are. If we granted anyone the power to eliminate people merely for believing stupid things, then we would invariably fall victim to the same fate when someone decided that we are the "enemy other". Out of sheer self defense, we must refrain from giving into the same repulsive xenophobia exhibited by this small group of loud-mouthed imbeciles.

Is that erudite enough for you?

youncasqua: draa: That's why they're so pissed off. It's ALWAYS about the money.

Do you really believe none of them are sincere?

Sorry I didn't respond back in a timely matter so I'll respond now.

Yes, surely some are sincere but for the most part I think it's about losing a solid revenue stream. These groups stand to lose millions even if 37 states are still left to fight in. There's just less and less reasons to continue to fight something that's inevitable and bound to happen in the end. People will just stop caring and stop giving cash and I think that scares some of these groups more than two dudes getting married. Not to mention it's one less thing they have in their holster to get people to listen to Republicans with, and right now, Republicans can use all the weapons they've got. Too bad for them they've just lost a big one.

OtherLittleGuy: gilgigamesh: "The Supreme Court's holding that proponents of an initiative had no legal right to appeal ignores California law and rewards corrupt politicians for abandoning their duty to defend traditional marriage laws.

I just love how activists can take the most vanilla procedural ruling and turn it into the moral outrage of the century.

This was an easy question. It is first year civil procedure for chrissake. This is the equivalent of declaring a holy war when you find out the DMV is closed on Saturdays.

We would have also accepted going on a rampage after finding out McDonalds stopped serving breakfast 5 minutes ago.

gingerjet: Weaver95: if I were still a conservative I wouldn't know what to say about how things were going lately.  no matter how you slice it, the past couple of years have been nothing but major defeats for the GOP legislative agenda.

At the federal level yes.  At the state level they are doing a bang up job of passing the GOP legislative agenda.

/see State of Texas

////State of New Jersey

There are.  According to many Democrats, in the '90s, conservatives were on the right side of history when it came to health care.

Infernalist: MisterEZ: Someone please explain to me again why it's wrong to round up all the christians and march them into ovens.

I just can't grasp the concept. It's just a real great idea that's full of merit, imo.

Because we don't do that sort of thing here.  Even if they'd do it to us if they had the chance.

So, we'll handle them with kid-gloves until their numbers dwindle to the point where they become completely irrelevant.  Until then, let's try to avoid the appearance of intending to go all 'jihad' on their ignorant asses.

Kinda like Paula Deen - bless her black heart.

IlGreven: NOM should be counting their blessings.

Kennedy found DOMA unconstitutional on state's rights grounds, not on 14th Amendment grounds. I suspect he would've upheld Prop 8.
