If Snowden makes it to Ecuador, he may "meld" with Assange, creating a government-secrets-leaker of hitherto unfathomed potency. Standing 100 feet tall, this new "Ass-snow-man" will spew vast waterfalls of embarassing operational details from every orifice, like some kind of hideous gothic humuculus. It is doubtful whether even the nuclear option could destroy it.

That's just inhumane. Nobody should have to listen to the B-52s.

So who writes a letter like that? Someone at the Pentagon? State Dept?

2013-06-26 01:10:32 PM
This focus on the source over the story is all too typical of our media.

Snowden is not the real story. The real story is a stunning and indefensible betrayal of the Fourth Amendment by Executive branch agencies.

But Snowden is the safe story, the one that won't cheese off establishmentarian journalists' access to their official sources. So... enjoy learning more about Snowden's girlfriend's stripper pole.

Humiliating those who rely on fear to rule is how their grip is weakened, so the media may be inadvertantly doing the right thing here.

Jury nullification is dead. Jurors are told to look only at whether or not the defendant violated the law, not whether or not the law is just.

Maybe sometimes they say "not guilty" anyway.... I've heard of it happening.  Not on grand juries though, those people seem to come from some sort of "rubber stamp" factory.

The only thing Assange ever leaked was into two women who didn't appreciate/want it.

Grand Juries just determine if there is enough evidence to charge someone with a crime.

Presumably the Justice department.  The State dept could take up the cause though since its such a hot, security related issue.

Well, it would be odd that 100% of all elected officials have grossly overstated the laws and permitted programs to proceed, knowing they violate the Constitution.I think that is highly improbable if not down-right absurd.  At the very least, odd.

Nothing that Snowden has divulged was some nefarious act that violates any law.  It was overwhelmingly approved by the elected officials and oversight officials, one BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE.

Snowden is a glory hounding attention whore, who knows almost nothing at all I'd presume, and yet decided to ruin his life forever for 15 minutes of fame.  He's an idiot.

The procedure of him facing his peers for violating our law is a construct of our justice system. If he flees to a country that has agreed to no legal obligation to cooperate with our justice system and essentially waives his participation in our society, what he "should" do gets trickier. He's subjecting himself to exile in lieu of taking his chances with the potentially random errors of legal procedure and an unpredictable jury. Seems fair.

...and the jury will be 12 people trusted to operate the levers on the justice machine, not 12 people who are trusted to do what is right or in accordance with American values, whatever those are.
