What's it called when Paula Deen crys? A Butterball.

JAGChem82: What these Deen defenders DON'T get is this: It's not that she said the dreaded "n-word" thirty some years ago, I don't give a shiat about the words you say in private to people, it's your actions that dictate if you're a racist. And in her case, being a public figure and all, you are under more scrutiny that the average person. And who the hell thinks that dressing up black people in a slave themed wedding would be a good idea? And if you did, why the HELL would you tell anyone who worked for you that, knowing that statements like that can will bite you in the ass?

Secondly, on this WHOLE issue of "wah wah wah, why can black people say the n-word and we can't", two things for you: Okay, I'm a black guy myself, and do you think I go into work blurting out "Wassup my nubianz" to my "fellow" black people on the job? My ass would be getting wrote up at the least or FIRED for being unprofessional. shiat, FARK acts like all of black America is at some rap studio 24-7 talking about "making money, killing nubians, etc." Secondly, let me call your wives by the name of "cutie pie", "sweet tits", or any other pet name she has? Oh, you don't like that? Well, if you call her "sweet tits", why can't I? Why can't your boss or any other stranger do it? Exactly. Lastly, just why in the HELL do you all want to emulate the rappers of the world? I thought all rappers were thugs and crackheads with 8 babymommas and 12 arrests. You mean, you WANT to sound illiterate, thuggish, and ghetto? In other words, if you want to say the "n-word", you are acting like a n-word!

I'm not "PC" either, but I've found out that people who complain about "political correctness" are the most sensitive whiners around that you when you knock their sacred cows (here in GA, it's making fun of country music, the Confederate flag, talking shiat about rednecks) they'll start sobbing about "disrespectin' mah heritage", and I suspect PD is similar is this regard.

Yeah, it's been a definitive change over the years with regards to use of the word - even 30 years ago you wouldn't hear it in polite company, but someone was always around with a joke.  I'd say it's been within the past 15 years that its use got retired completely - that any use of the word was looked down with scorn if the person using it wasn't black.  If saying n****** once 30 years ago was her only problem, then she wouldn't have a problem.  She could say she used it, she grew up in a different era, and she's had to learn that society is different now but it's something she fights with every day.

Instead, she gives off the distinct impression that she stopped using the word years ago, but never stopped thinking it, and that has prevented her from seeing black people as anything but props to fulfill some magical play that runs around in the back of her head.  That she's still the kind of person who would look at a dinner party and say "You know what's missing?  Negroes!"

Considering that some people want to go out and march and burn things after hearing the name may have something to do with it.

Reasonable behavior. We should all adjust our thoughts to accommodate people like this.

That's not butter.

It's...  well...

It's closer to floor wax and the epoxy they use to fix windshields than it is to butter.

You know, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I almost feel a little bit bad for her. She seems like a simpleton who was unfortunate enough to be raised i the South who doesn't realize exactly what she's done. One of those "Was I wrong? Should I not have said that?" type deals. A simpleton, because I'm from the South, I grew up around racism, and I was smart enough even as a child to realize racism was ignorant.

I suggest the rest of you do the same. He just want to distract you from Paula Deen's vile behavior.

1. LOL pot, meet kettle
2.The only thing more pathetic than doing this is announcing it like it means something to someone
3. You don't know what words mean.

Bizarrely, most of the people who are painting all Southern white people with a broad brush are the ones defending Deen. They are the ones insisting that "everybody does it."

Sister Mary Farker: Anyone who thinks Paula Deen is the subject of a witch hunt for being un-PC needs to read the actual complaint. It's horrific. I was inclined to try to understand her till I read it.  Also I'm cheesed off that folks think all white women of a certain age and region think or act like her or that it's understandable if they are like her.  She doesn't get to own Southern food, either. I and my relatives need no help from her to cook a lot better than she does and more healthfully (if we feel like it that day).

Here's the complaint. Go read it and see if you think you can defend her after that. So far none of it is contradicted by anything Ms. Deen has said in her deposition. The wedding in question that was being planned was her brother's, btw.

I have to go make some jambalaya now.

I agree, I went and read the entire complaint when it was linked previously.  Brother Bubba really needs an ass whoopin.  Lots and lots of bad things have happened, the n word ain't nearly the big issue here.

That being said, I don't feel bad for her, but I am not out to get her either.  Conducting yourself in an appropriate manner when you make your living in the public spotlight to some degree is the cost of making the grade.  She got called out on something she did a while ago.  Not so bad.  Trying to defend it, very bad.  As others have noted, she should have let the PR staff handle it, laid low, issued an apology, donated some money somewhere, etc etc. and it probably would not have reached this level.

But I don't think she's going to wonder where her next meal is coming from.  She'll be just fine.

Want some hate, check out FoodNetwork's FB page....it's like freeperville but for butter

IMO if you are a mentally competent, emotionally stable adult, it should not be possible for you to be injured by the words of another person.  People who become so offended by the ignorant utterances of other people are the most pathetic, weak people in the world, and should count themselves lucky they've managed to escape the wrath of Darwin by being born into the world during one of it's rare coddling moods.  If this were any other era you'd have been drowned in a bathtub by your parents.

Sister Mary Farker: Diogenes: All I'm going to say is she didn't do herself any favors in her responses up to this point, and if she had PR people they should be ashamed.

Her previous publicist quit 18 months ago when she found out Deen had concealed her diabetes for 3 years and then planned to endorsed a Novo Nordisk drug for her condition. This was after 6 years on the gravy train, but even she couldn't keep holding her nose. The lawsuit was filed 2 months later.

Her current team is completely incompetent, or just arrogant. The latter can lead to the former, though.

Given the description of the corporate and restaurant staff in the complaint, it's very easy to believe.  Incompetent and/or yes men.

If the plaintiff can substantiate those claims than Paula and Bubba are going to be crying more than butter. Publicist won't fix this. Get out of the restaurant business or hire someone to do the day-to-day while you stay far away receiving checks.

firsttiger: I don't buy sorry, but I do buy "Sorry I got caught."

Got caught? Got caught doing what? It's not like she lied or tried to hide it. She was asked if she ever said it and she did the
unforgivable - she told the TRUTH.

I'm not saying what she did was right, but all things considered, it is understandably WHY she fell back on that particular term
when describing the event to her husband. A man threatened her life. He scared the shiat out of her, probably pissed her off
after the fact and made her feel extremely vulnerable. The depth of her fear and anger toward this man for what he did must
have been extreme, so is it any surprise that when she - a woman raised in the south during a time when such epithets were
as thick on the ground as rocks at a quarry - would fall back to the most extreme, derogatory term she could think of when
relating the story to her husband?

I'm a person who can't even say p*ssy without blushing. I've only said the "c-word" once that was because the person to whom
I was applying the word had been so awful, so low-down, that when relating to my husband what she had done, it was the word
that sprang to  mind to convey the virulence of my feelings for her.

Was it a good word to use? No. Am I proud that I said it? No. But *why* I reflexively reached for that word is understandable,
given the context of the situation.

I honestly think that's the larger problem.  People don't see the difference between Paula Deen and Mel Brooks.  (See fat_free above)

Actually, I think you miss my point.  We have a WORD that has been used by Jesse Jackson, Richard Nixon, Jamie Foxx, Young Jeezy, Elvis Costello, Mel Brooks, Eddie Murphy, and THOUSANDS of people.  Yet now we have a list of people that CAN say this WORD, and others who CAN'T.

So who sets the standards as to "S/he has an acceptable use of the 'nig' word" and "ZOMG THAT IS SO SHOCKING YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!!"

If this word is so evil, then it should be evil across the board, or we can all agree that this is a big ass retarded farking waste of time and be done with it.

People who use this as their argument want to use the word in order to not feel like a racist/bigot when they are using it.

Who says fat_free wants to use the n-word? I didn't hear him / her say that. What I heard was "Why is it OK for one segment of the population
to use a particular word but not the other?"

Either it is OK for everyone to use it or NOBODY can use it.

I always hear this line about "them being able to say it, but not us."
When I actually feel like pointing it out I try to explain that A) you're allowed to say it all you want, but people are also allowed to make social calculations based on your use of said word and B) you don't have large numbers of black  people bemoaning how unfair it is that it's socially unacceptable for them  to say cracker or honkey white devil in polite company. Also it's not like all she did was was accidentally dropped a few N-bombs while  quoting Eazy-E. "Political Correctness" is a phrase used by some white men (the only people I know who use it) as code for "You mean I can't get away with being an asshole anymore? I have to think first before I talk? I have to be considerate of others? WAAAHHHH!!!"

Of course most of the rest of us can go through our lives perfectly fine without offending people of different ethnic groups, religions, sexual orientations, and so on. Common human decency.

What's it like not to have feelings?
