''I is what I is and I'm not changing,'' she said. ''There's someone evil out there that saw what I worked for and wanted it.''

An uncomfortable Lauer tried to end the interview, but Deen repeated that anyone who hasn't sinned should attack her.

I can only imagine Lauer's discomfort.  Jesus, that must have been awkward.

Retire quietly, Paula.  Your friends know the truth about you, so you say - so retire and spend the rest of your days talking about how you were railroaded.  Your restaurant will still be successful.  You'll be popular in Georgia, and probably will make even more money than before, if you play your cards right.  So, yeah.  Give it up.

Oh - and your PR folks?  FIRE their sorry asses.

Jake Havechek: A lot of old people are still like this.

Anyone who uses the term "colored", and does not know why it is wrong is an example.

They grew up in the 1950s, and for some reason, their mentality remained in that era.

This is wrong?

Should we not do this?

I still call my favorite Girl Scout cookies "Savannahs".  What kind of weener name is "Do See Dohs"?  WTH was wrong with "Savannahs"?!?

Also, Jodi Arias wouldn't have convicted herself.  O.J. Simpson wouldn't have voted for his own indictment if he'd been on the grand jury.

And Murderin' Mike Mahoney wouldn't have thrown the switch on Old Sparky and executed himself, neither.

Seriously? She didn't kill anyone.

You missed the point.  What I'm trying to say is, of course she wouldn't have fired herself.  Nobody allowed to weigh their own fate ever decides to do the just thing.

Right but associating her with murderers is totally cool because she's a racist.

The outrage is outrageous over this.

They are real issues going on that should have the community outraged, but this really isn't one of them.

Talk about disproportionate outrage. Get yourself a tissue and calm down. Put a cool cloth on your forehead or something.

Her words, on the record, likely violated whatever morals clause her employers and sponsors had. The free market reacted normally. Get over it.

I honestly think that's the larger problem.  People don't see the difference between Paula Deen and Mel Brooks.  (See fat_free above)

Actually, I think you miss my point.  We have a WORD that has been used by Jesse Jackson, Richard Nixon, Jamie Foxx, Young Jeezy, Elvis Costello, Mel Brooks, Eddie Murphy, and THOUSANDS of people.  Yet now we have a list of people that CAN say this WORD, and others who CAN'T.

So who sets the standards as to "S/he has an acceptable use of the 'nig' word" and "ZOMG THAT IS SO SHOCKING YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!!"

If this word is so evil, then it should be evil across the board, or we can all agree that this is a big ass retarded farking waste of time and be done with it.

I watched the interview. Seemed like a lot of "this is my plea for QVC to not drop me". Also, "im sorry i was caught" is another feeling I picked up on. She clearly contradicted herself more than once after Matt asked her is she used the word more than one time; to which she replied no. Then he asked if she lied under oath when she was quoted saying that "of course she had used it more than one time". She replied "i was honest in my testimony" then went on and on about her grandson staying up past his bedtime.

My official review of the interview: meh, who the hell cares. southern woman is racist, any surprise?

My sister and I call each other all kinds of vulgar female terms in jest. No word is evil across the board. Think about the sheer stupidity of that idea. You'd wipe out all historical texts recording our racist history for the sake of not calling out people using racist terms today in a racist contex. That's just ... dumb.

Paula Deen made $17 million in 2012.

I don't care that she made that much. But the fact that she's trying to play the victim card after all this makes me glad her income is going to take a hit in 2013.

Paula is all about the money, which is why the vast majority of people do their jobs anyway.  She has worked very hard, and gone through alot, to get to the point that she won the farking lottery, professionally speaking.  When Food Network picked her up, her life changed.  She's tied alot of who she is into this celebrity persona she's created, and of course the money.  It's a lethal combination - if she loses popularity or income, her whole world probably seems like it's coming undone.

That said, I have no sympathy.  Live by the TV, die by the TV.  I agree with Food Network - it's not about what she said 30 years ago, it's about what she's saying now.  And her "apologies" are not only more racist than the original comment, but they also ring hollow once she starts running her mouth.

2013-06-26 12:22:46 PM
Lady, you're a racist.  Own up to it.  You don't get to suggest a 'plantation style' wedding complete with an all-black servant crew and skate on being called a racist.

You don't get to comment with sympathy for your great-grandfather who was so heartbroken over the loss of his slaves after the Civil War that he shot himself.  Oh yeah, and calling them 'workers' doesn't make them not slaves, you fat racist biatch.

This whole thing would not have come to light if she hadn't forced her employees to work for her for free.

That, for me, is the central issue in this whole sorry mess, and this whole "OH, SHE'S A SOUTHERN

The plaintiff worked for Paula's brother Bubba for five years, putting up with lower pay than men junior to her were getting, and being bombarded by sexist and racist comments by Bubba, along with physical advances (allegedly). What words Paula used have almost nothing to do with the lawsuit.

Boy, that $1.25 million settlement offer they sent her before they filed the complaint must seem like a bargain now.

Nothing like using an old lady from the south as a punching bag to drive home political correctness.

this.

I'm interested. At what point does it become unacceptable? What would she have to say and do for you to say 'not cool'? bearing in mind no one is suggesting she go to jail, she just doesn't get a comfy telly career anymore. And if she goes on TV shows and says 'poor me', the public get to say, 'not so much'.

It becomes unacceptable when the people being persecuted say it's enough. And that's for any race or region, I remember when the Polish were the brunt of jokes, blondes there for awhile too. This old southern woman is a product of her times and environment.

2013-06-26 12:48:10 PM
What amazes me is that people keep saying she is an old lady raised in the south, and times were different.  she was in her 30s then, so it was not like she was sitting on the porch with the vapors, sipping on juleps, and waiting on crops to be brought in.

I am 43, grew up in New Orleans, and 30 years ago, was not that long ago...  Well past the time of the civil rights marches, and we did not run around saying the n word willy nilly.  Dean was not born in the 30s.

She has a proven history of racism.

Yeah, it is THIS to me, not the use of the "n word" 30 years ago. It's her attitude towards blacks in general that indicates she's what we in the South call a "closet racist". You only see their true attitudes toward other people if you are family or a close personal friend; otherwise, why they are just the NICEST people.

Never mind the fact that she thought it would be a fun and fantastic idea to have a slave party where all the blacks dress in fancy white suits to serve the white people.

Never did happen did it?

[W]hen asked if she wanted black men to play the role of slaves at a wedding she explained

she got the idea from a restaurant her husband and her had dined at saying, "The whole entire waiter staff was middle-aged black men, and they had on beautiful white jackets with a black bow tie."I mean, it was really impressive. That restaurant represented a certain era in America...after the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War...It was not only black men, it was black women...I would say they were slaves."

So she really wasn't the first to think of that.

Noshe isnt she was in her teens during the civil rights movement, she grew up with segregation being removed, and people being placed on equal footing.
