And apart from the horrific suggestion that the black men serve as wait staff for a retro-themed party, the fact that she may have uttered a racial slur 30 years ago fails to move the needle for me. The statue of limitations on that has passed, and getting pissed about it now just seems like people needing to get pissed about something.

She may be less than fully accepting, she may even be tone-deaf (that suggestion above didn't appear to be motivated by malice, just incredible unawareness - she seems kind of dotty anyway), but I doubt she's got Klan robes in the attic or a racist newsletter printed under her name.

We've all interpreted this incorrectly. It's quite obvious she's the love-child of Popeye and an unnamed black woman.

Her animosity towards black people is clearly misdirected loathing of her mother, a mother abandoned by a sailor who was just in town for weekend liberty. Raising Paula was hard on that urban mother, so hard she had to give Paula up for adoption to the local sausage magnate.

Feel for her.

I kind of have to agree.  She may be a product of the old South, but that doesn't mean her views haven't changed (I don't know that they have, don't flame me) or that she isn't at least trying (but from time to time fails spectacularly).  Changing attitudes regarding racism takes generations.  Decades.  And frankly, education.

My mother is the same age as Paula, and in the 1980s when it happened, she was 39, long past the civil rights movement.  So cannot say "she is an old southern lady, and that is how they are" because she is not that old.

And it was not just a slur in the 80s, it was the minstrel wedding, the mistreatment of employees, etc, and further racial slurs, it is a pattern.

Shouldn't supporting Obama cleanse all these sins away? Being a leftist seems to give an unlimited moral license for all sorts of behavior that would otherwise rightly be decried. It's kind of a soul-cleansing religious thing. Just mouth the right words around the right crowd, receive their approval, then do whatever the f*ck you want, secure in the knowledge that a member of the lefty tribe will always defend, and never censure, another member.

It makes this entire Paula Deen episode all the more surprising. I suppose she just looks and talks 'too republican' to be allowed the typical leniency.

2013-06-26 10:30:21 AM
FTFA: Deen said she didn't know if African Americans are offended by the n-word. "It's very distressing for me to go into my kitchens and I hear what these young people are calling each other," she told Lauer. She said she had never joined the use of that language.

She can't have it both ways.

If she really, REALLY doesn't know whether or not African Americans are offended by the N-word, she is more ridiculously stupid than even I thought possible. Also - you don't have to be black to be offended by the N-word. I am lily white, and it makes me sick to hear the N-word coming out of people's mouths. (And please don't start some ridiculous argument with me saying, ..."But rap music". But before you ask, yes, it bothers me there too because to me it trivializes the long and sordid history of the use of the word by making it nothing more than some retarded jingle.)

If we are to take her at her word, that her ignorance of this word is real, then why exactly is it "distressing" for her to go into her kitchens to hear what young people are calling each other?

Oh, that's right - it's because she's lying.

You are either a racist or you're not. Had someone robbed me at gunpoint, at any point in time, it would honestly NEVER occur to me to refer to that person with a racial slur of all things. Wouldn't even cross my mind. Would I call them a motherfarker? Yes, I would. I would also use all other manner of profanity. But my point is, I don't care WHAT this guy did or didn't do to her, this excuse of hers is stupid.

And? 30 years ago was 19 farking 83. Not 1950. That excuse is bullshiat too. She's a vile woman, who already deceived her adoring fans once, by hiding her diabetes from them while teaching them how to prepare food that would have a better chance of having them contract Type II Diabetus (much less heart disease) because coming clean would've been bad for her brand. I'd say we know very clearly now what a piece of self-serving shiat she is.

I hope she keeps talking, because she's dug herself a mighty fine hole.

I've been trying to figure out exactly what it is that has people so up in arms. An old white lady said "the n word". So what is the big deal? People are stupid and say dumb things.

But I think I have it figuured out. She is a famous person, which many people automatically hate. I fall under this. I hate almost anyone who has been on TV more than 3 times. Also i have hated Dean since I tried to watch an episode of her "cooking" show. But that for most isn't a good enough justification.

But, a couple of years ago we learned she kept the fact that she had diabetes a secret from the public until it could profit her. This is shiatty, but a lot of people might not get the reason why they should despise her, as you have to think harder.

And now, we find out she said a naughty word? Well everyone understands why that is bad. Most of us were punished for naughty words as a kid, and she said one.

/but seiously, how many threads can we have about a woman saying n:gger?

I'm kind of sad about all this.  I met her when she came to the radio station I work at to promote a cookbook she had out at the time.  She was the nicest person.  She even gave me an autographed cookbook as a gift.  Her and her husband seemed like the perfect genteel Southern couple.  I guess it was all just PR and image building.
BTW, I never used the cookbook, since every recipe seemed like an excuse to dump a pound of butter into whatever you were cooking.

GreatGlavinsGhost: This. This is why people are so up in arms. (Start reading at page 14, paragraph 51)

That's from the complaint as filed, yes? Merely an allegation from the woman accusing Ms Deen of being a racist. Without some specific claims, there would be no reason to file. (And while I have no reason to doubt the accuser's side of the story, I also have no reason to accept it, and those (from 51) are the only two sentences I read. The totality of the claims suggests a lot of wrongdoing, but I bet if you tallied up the questionable things both I and my boss have said at work (for example, no matter how many times he's threatened to stab me over something, never once did I actually feel threatened; and no matter what I joke about, I'd not use my position to screw with other employees) you might find some actionable words.

That specific suggestion is pretty stupid, and FWIW she knows enough to know that (but not enough to keep it to herself). I don't really care about Ms Diabetes McSticks-o-Butter, but I find it weird that people are calling for blood over stuff she said 30 years ago.

// I'll change that tune if there's an actual finding that she was all discriminate-y, or was physically abusive
// but even then, if the last 15 years or whatever have been clean and she's made good on her karmic debts, who (beyond the courts) cares?
// if she makes good - pays restitution, whatever - not even the courts care
// I understand people have emotional feelings, and that's cool (even if FoodTV fired her again); however *I* don't get it

Beyond supposedly holding an unpopular and offensive opinion, what has she actually done to hurt anyone?

I always found her blazingly white teeth odd, especially for an old lady.

I love how she uses the argument that she didn't know it was offensive right after explaining that the only time she used it was during a robbery when she was at her angriest and upset enough to use a word like that.

Also the eighties was a different time. Nowadays the N word gets thrown around casually. Not so much back then - you only used it if you meant it. So the 30-year-ago argument actually makes her position worse, if anything.

She's just throwing out excuses. And not even thinking them through.

2013-06-26 11:15:30 AM
The funny thing is that the "I is what I is" may have been put into Paula's head by a racist joke.  As Gawker points out, the old joke goes:

There was a black guy and a white guy. They were debating over
whether god was white or black. The white guy said that there
was only one way to find out and that is to pray. So they go up
on a hill and they pray, and pray, and pray. Finally they here a
voice say, "I am what I am." The white guy jumps up, and says,
"AHA I told you he was white." The black guy jumps up and says,
"What do you mean? That didn't prove anything." "Yes it did,
Because if he was black he would've said I is what I is."

How about continuing to give out her recipes for amazingly unhealthy food even after finding out it had given her diabetes, not disclosing her condition until she could make a buck hawking some treatment for it?
