I've been a feminist since my teens. I credit a good community of women around me, especially my older sister.

2013-06-26 10:01:39 AM
Why on earth wouldn't you sell it with sex?  Feminism is all about women having the freedom to do what we want with our own bodies.

Unless other women think it inappropriate.

Feminism is the radical idea that women should have the same rights as men.

Christianity is the radical idea that people should be nice to each other.

"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." Gandhi.

The question should be, "how to get more people to support feminism." One thing that would help is a new label that supporters can wear without stigma.

Something tells me that plastering across your tits so we have to stare at them to read the message ain't helping things.

I mean, we're gonna look at your tits anyway now you just gave us an excuse to do so.

I dunno. Maybe drop the obvious bigotry and hatred, lose the self-righteousness, and learn to pick your battles?

Or resort to calling yourself a misandrist like the rest of the cool kids do already.

Being a feminist just means that you care about women as people.

make feminists less annoying?

How many feminists does it take to change a light bulb?

Too many feminists are SRSly misguided.

/SRSly

Maybe we could cut straight to the chase and aim for humanism in general instead of feminism specifically.

Subby, the real marketing list goes:

Sex
Fear
Greed

The order changes based on your age and gender.

But not necessarily the same responsibilities.

It depends on whether we're trying to sell sex-positive feminism or sex-negative feminism.  The former will sell itself if the latter isn't giving it a bad rap, and you couldn't sell sex-negative feminism with the best marketing campaign in history.  So I think the real question is how to put distance between the two brands while also killing off the one that's vile swill.

It just seems like a weird word. What is masculism? Why would the concept of gender equality be named after just one gender? Seems like there should be a word that captures the idea of "gender neutralism" or something. That is why the phrase always rubbed me the wrong way, although being a proponent of gender equality does make me what others would call a feminist, it is not a term i self apply.

exactly. Believing people should be treated with respect and equally regardless of who they are sounds like decentpersonism to me. When you self identify as a feminist, you're probably annoying.

You could start by putting Amanda Marcotte and most Jezebel contributors on a rocket and shoot them into space.

That right there would solve 98% of your problem, but you'll still have to tamp down dumb shiat like this.

"Focus on injustice, poverty, and women in parts of the world beyond the United States."

So, concentrate on areas where we can't fix things, rather than where we can actually solve problems. Well, that's one way to make sure problems won't go away, and you'll always have a cause to fight for. That makes all sorts of sense.

If you have to keep changing the name of something COUGH*liberal-progessive*COUGH, its probably not the name that is the problem.

I don't think defending an accused rapist as his court appointed attorney really qualifies. It's kind of your job to give him the best defense possible.

2013-06-26 11:54:15 AM
Feminism these days seems to be more focused on first world inconveniences and intangibles like "rape culture."  I'm not sure how you can sell that to the general public, especially when a lot of advocates toss around concepts like patriarchy in the same way that Alex Jones talks about the Illuminati.

2013-06-26 11:56:10 AM
Why is the term that describes that heritage in such disrepute?

Having NOW, the political face of the feminists, being taken over by annoying lesbians hell bent on attacking the traditional family unit would be a good place to start.

Well, if you're going to define the word in a vacuum, sure.

If we're talking about the movement itself, ...yeah, feminism pretty much shot itself in the foot when it took up residency in some marginal academic divisions in the university, and slowly devolved into an esoteric exercise in intellectual frivolousness and resentment.

2013-06-26 11:59:18 AM
Isn't the more pressing matter "How do we get self proclaimed feminists to look up what that word actually means ?"

2013-06-26 11:59:41 AM
How about promoting for equality instead of for an advantage?

Feminism gets a bad rap because a lot of "feminist" try to tell women that they don't need a man, that they need to work, and that they don't need to have kids.  Problem is that when "feminists" preach these "options" they often misrepresent the true idea behind the suggestion.  By presenting these options they often make it sound like woman need to pursue them in order to unlock their full potential and that not doing so is somehow anti-women thus implying that getting a job, for example, is the right thing to do for all women.  So Suzy mom homemaker is pitted against corporate single Sally.  True Feminism is about freedom of choice and equality, plain and simple.

The bolded part is the lie that causes the stigma to persist.  The rest doesn't matter, after the lie is out there.  I've met dozens of proud feminists and not one who even comes close to fitting that stereotype.  Only on television and movies, where the characters with that perspective are rendered as completely unsympathetic.

The attitude does exist, if I'm to believe the anecdotes of people have supposedly seen someone express the idea once.
