At the end of the day, even the most evil person goes home, takes a shower, and eats dinner with his family.

Except for convicts, who have to eat with other convicts.

Arpaio may be an asshole, but he's still a human being.

Okay okay. He's still a human being-like creature. At the very least, he seems to be able to take on the appearance of a human being.

And isn't that what matters?

The officer that was being earsaulted must be a decent one. The asshole officers never get help from inmates. Ever. The good ones do. Treat them right, and they will treat you right.

I had one co-worker fighting a guy, he pulls a knife on her, but fumbled with it and dropped it on the floor. Another inmate ran over and stood on it while her backup came and got him restrained. One officer at another unit was stabbed to death over a pair of shoes. She was known for treating inmates like dirt. Anecdotes do not equal data, all correctional officers have all seen it. I wish more would heed that warning.

This. The golden rule about treating others as you'd have them treat you is very obvious in the corrections environment. I seriously doubt Sheriff Joe paid for the pizza, though. I have the distinct feeling the earsaulted officer bought them the pizza, and had to pull a few strings to allow her rescuers the right to enjoy it.

Hey I like Papa John's. Little Caesar's now... THAT is a punishment.

IMO, it's all well and good. He treats a prisoner like a human being. What might have been nicer if offer them perks, or a way to work up the system. They showed a good side, help that side out and use them as a lesson that being good in jail does pay off.

/kudos for the inmate

As a criminal defense attorney, I can confirm this as being very accurate.  Inmates understand that they must follow the rules of facility where they are housed.  They generally consider all guards who are doing their job as "decent" and will come to their rescue in situations like the article described.  But if the guard is an ass who likes to demean inmates and goes out of his way to make their lives miserable, they will not life a finger to help them.

I farking despise Arpaio, but I have to give him huge props for this.

Unless you've ever been in jail, you have literally not a clue how much something as minor as pizza means to an inmate... It's like losing your virginity but better. It's really one of the most meaningful things sheriff Joe could have done for them (well, besides get them a hooker... but that might draw some criticism).

Also, the quote from the C.O. about inmates respecting you if you respect them is spot-on. They're so used to being treated like absolute shiat that actually getting respect from someone who essentially has complete control over them isn't just brushed off. When I was in jail, we all treated the asshole guards like they deserved to be treated - the ones who treated us like human beings, we'd do damn near anything in our power for, because we knew they'd do the same for us. The ones who respected us were also the ones who wouldn't hesitate to smack an inmate if they really deserved it, and no one ever filed a grievance when this happened (which says a lot - inmates just look for reasons to file grievances) or did anything but give the C.O. props and rag on the inmate that got smacked for farking with the good guards.

One guard in particular that was a really good guy, I remember I was trustee and he was working in the kitchen with us one day - I was able to straight up walk in the cooler with him and ask him to bring me in a pack of cigarettes that I'd pay for with some cash I had inside-the-walls (Louisiana parish jails are no-smoking). Any of the dick guards would have put me on a 21 day lockdown (solitary) right then and there for just asking, and then given me another 21 days for having cash on me. That same guard also had my back when I got caught with some cash by another guard, and went and personally talked to the Captain to ensure I wasn't disciplined for it in any way. I ran into him a few weeks ago (couple months after I got out) and bought him a beer for that.

2013-06-26 12:44:01 PM
I think any Sherriff would have done the same for the inmates.

The video of the event is pretty cool.  Not one, not a few, but most of the inmates rushed forward to jump the dude attacking her.  They deserve a bit more than pizzia, IMO.

ThrowedOff: Any of the dick guards would have put me on a 21 day lockdown (solitary) right then and there for just asking, and then given me another 21 days for having cash on me.

That brings to mind an example of this... One day we got caught playing dominoes that we made from a Ritz cracker box (not gambling) and one of the guards that was alright but was kind of on the asshole disrespectful side tried to lock us all down for 45 days just for having some makeshift dominoes. One of the cool ones stepped up to bat for us and kept us from getting in any trouble.
In most Louisiana parish jails, really any form of recreation is banned... No cards, nothing. All we had was a metal table with a chess board built in with no chess pieces. You have literally nothing to occupy your time... The only option is an AM/FM radio on commissary (that caught 1-2 stations behind the thick walls) for $34.99 (would have cost like $5 anywhere else) and another $41.99 for a semi-decent pair of headphones. We got 'yard time' like 2 hours a week typically, but it was in basically an indoor gym, with nothing to do but walk in circles.

We also got caught playing football once with a T-Shirt stuffed inside a sock - played for like 3 hours and one of the cool guards walked in and told us he'd been watching us all day on the cameras laughing. We had to stop because one of the dick guards was coming on-duty... He took our 'football' and slipped it back to us when no one was looking. Typically, that would have gotten us 21 days in solitary (which means no phone calls to family, usually none to lawyer, etc.).
