The Yankees owe Rodriguez more than $100 million, plus possible bonuses, for a contract through 2017.

No wonder he's pissed.  Yankees are going to take a bath on that contract.

Yep. The Rangers bent over backwards for Hamilton, putting up with his sanctimonious recovering addict schtick to the point where they didn't even celebrate with real champagne when they won the pennant.  He still went full douchebag.

Cashman was actually against A-Rod's contract from the get-go. That was Hank Steinbrenner's baby (and one of the reasons Hal, not Hank, runs the team now).

There are a couple stories that were buried about Pujols in STL from his early days.  Apparently he did get a little bit of an ego after his first two years and rumors is he was the reason for alot of the cliques in the locker room.  I have a couple friends who work for the Cardinals in various forms and apparently there was no one happier than Albert left than Bill DeWitt.  The last offer they made to his agent was a token offer, knowing he was already ticked off and never going to sign it.

I thought I heard yesterday that he was good to go for July, must have been unofficial reports.

The Yanks kind of need a bat at this point (with Tex probably out) so I wouldnt burn the ARod bridge.

Dunno how you can really burn that bridge. The signal from upper management/ownership is pretty clear they'd rather he be gone, and while I'm sure Girardi wouldn't mind having him back in the lineup, I think Cashman has already started making plans to be without him long term, contract be damned.

besides.. we have Ichiro who can clearly hit a homer whenever he wants! (I was amused when I found out that last night was only Ichiro's second ever walk-off homer.. moreso because I clearly remember his first.. off Mariano at Safeco two years ago.. I was livid).

In all seriousness, yeah, the lineup is pretty anemic.. and cluttered with lefties, which is a liability (a far cry from the L-R-L-R lineups they used to be able to toss out there every day). The bright spot? This Zoilo Almonte kid looks like he's gonna be somethin.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard the Yankees signed Rodriguez to that contract without any impending free agency or trade demands hanging over their head - they just up and gave him the money.  If that's true then I have even less sympathy for the Yankees (and I had shait for sympathy before.)

In an alternate universe ARod was signed by the Red Sox instead of the Yankees.  That would be a fun alternate timeline to follow.

A-Rod opted out of his previous contract, so technically he was a free agent when the current contract was signed. However, I don't think any other teams were realistically bidding for his services

Oh its even better than that.. the Yankees effectively outbid themselves to re-sign him. Like I said, this was Hank Steinbrenner and Randy Levine's genius maneuver, all to the objection of lower management (this was in the waning days of George's health, the yes-men were running the show and Hank wanted to prove he could take over the team).

Here's the full contract terms:
- $10M signing bonus ($2M paid upon approval, $1M paid each Jan. 15, 2009-2013, $3M paid Jan. 15, 2014)
- Salary: 08:$27M, 09:$32M, 10:$32M, 11:$31M, 12:$29M, 13:$28M, 14:$25M, 15:$21M, 16:$20M, 17:$20M
- $30M marketing agreement based on home run milestones ($6M each for reaching 660, 714, 755 and tying and breaking major league HR record)
- No-trade protection
- Perks: may purchase 4 best available season tickets for 2008, 4 Legends Suite or comparable season tickets for 2009-17
- Texas obligated to fund $9M as part of deferred compensation provision in previous contract (to be paid with interest in $3M increments in 2008, 2009 & 2010)

A-Rod has 647 HR right now, so if he plays for any reasonable length of time, he'll get the 660 milestone.  I doubt he'll get 108+ HR over the next 4.5 seasons to reach the 755/762/763 milestones, largely because I don't think he'll be able to stay on the field.  But if he makes a half-assed comeback, 714 should be reachable... that's less than 15 per full season.

(And if you want to see an unenthusiastic "celebration" wait for: "Alex Rodriguez passes Babe Ruth's HR total in Yankee Stadium!")

Let's say he gets to 714.  That means just for 2013 forward the Yankees will pay $130M into his bank account, for 4.5 seasons.  He's still an above-average 3B, but he's likely to slide to the crowded DH spot before long, and his bat will not be above-average for that role for very long.  All for ~$30M per year, including time on the DL.

They're praying he gets busted for PEDs.

That all said, it would be a lot of fun if A-Rod started publicly trolling Brian Cashman.  Go on talk shows and do impressions of him.  Go WWE-heel and declare himself to be the greatest baseball player who ever lived, and any fans who don't acknowledge it need to shut up.  Take his case to the press that he should be batting leadoff and playing center field.  Get photographed with Dennis Rodman constantly, wearing only pinstriped underwear.  Donate his "Legends Suite" tickets to the winners of raffles at Insane Clown Posse gatherings.

I'm still upset Bryce Harper didn't go that route.  He already had the Ultimate Warrior-style eyeblack.

I thought this was the rare media story where A-Rod looked like the better person.  Cashman sounds unhinged.  Blasting your employees in public like that is going to cost his team money when it comes time to try to buy out A-Rod's ridiculous contract.

A-Rod can kick back, hug his centaur paintings, and do nothing and collect $118M from the Yankees over the next few years.  Or he can jog his way through the twilight of his career, get booed constantly, and make it $130M.  Pissing him off isn't a "win" for the General Manager of a very expensive business.

(I'd offer A-Rod $80-90M right now to void his contract and make him a free agent.  I doubt A-Rod would take it, but it really would be better for everyone.
