(Some Guy)   Wendy Davis is filibustering the Texas Senate to prevent the passage of a bill that will make abortion almost impossible for most women in her jurisdiction. She needs to keep talking. She needs your stories. Her aides are collecting them. GO   (wendydavisforsenate.com) divider line 2204

One time I got beat up by the LCI ram sports mascot. I was 14 and drunk.

Sorry, no story. I've never been pregnant.

I hope she succeeds in preventing that bill from passing. Women need to have access to safe, legal abortions.

If I recall it disallows abortions after five months of gestation and requires clinics that perform abortions to meet the same standards that other outpatient surgery centers must meet.

I don't see those as onerous, does anyone else?

2013-06-25 08:18:22 PM
She should read the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and all of the Amendments.

Anyone who would still vote for that POS bill afterwards should be taken out behind the barn and shot - it *IS* Texas, after all.

2013-06-25 08:22:08 PM
It would shut down all but five clinics in Texas.  Not a small state.

2013-06-25 08:24:26 PM
Texas, the same state against "big government" ... Give me a fecking break.

Go Wendy!

Dear Texas,

Things like this is why nobody likes you.

And what's the percentage of men vs. women able to vote for this?

Yeah.

Yup.

"The Texas Medical Association, the Texas Hospital Association and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists had sent letters urging lawmakers to vote no on the bill, saying it would not raise the standard of care."

But what the f*ck do a bunch of doctors know?

Satan's Chocolate Starfish: What is this "GO" thing?

It's an ancient Chinese strategy game involving alternating placement of white and black stones to surround the other player's pieces.  But that's not important right now.

Outpatient surgery centers like the oral surgeon or like the orthopedic surgeon?

One is butt easy, the other can cost millions.

"Pente" is a more interesting alternative.
No quality computer version has ever been made, because the possible number of moves are in the trillions.

MissFeasance: It would shut down all but five clinics in Texas.  Not a small state.

What is the proper ratio of residents to abortion clinics? If I remember correctly Mississippi doesn't have one.

Can't the remaining clinics bring themselves up to health and hygiene standards to keep operating? We all know what Kermit Gosnell's clinic was like, women don't need 'care' like that they deserve a clean facility well stocked with emergency supplies such as a defibrillator and emergency drugs. Elective abortion is an invasive surgical procedure, you would want the place to be as clean and prepared as your oral surgeon's office wouldn't you?

I was raped as a 13 year old at a party and didn't find out I was pregnant until almost 14 weeks later because I was heavy. 20 week cutoff would have been really hard for me to meet under those circumstances

I also didn't find out because I'm not a female.

But the rest is true. I swear.

Kermit Gosnell is relevant to a discussion of abortion clinic regulations like David Berkowitz is relevant to a discussion of USPS hiring standards.

Do you have a source for that? The link doesn't provide much information it is just a splash page for Senator Davis.

I would be interested in reading more about that.

An absolutely vital point - nobody in possession of a penis has ANY say in restricting abortion.  If you're never going to face an unwanted/unplanned/potentially lethal pregnancy, you have NOTHING to say.

Come on, Fark....show us the power of the Interwebs.  Im glad she is doing this, but it makes me sick that she *has* to be doing this at all.   Why are the GOP so determined to drag us back into the farkin' dark ages?

2013-06-25 08:38:11 PM
Ah, THERE'S my farking Hero tag.

The Texas Senate GOP is one big, messy abortion.

Why can't she just read some of her scripts from Revolution?

2013-06-25 08:38:51 PM
First, I support that she does this--it's what a filibuster is supposed to be for, to protect the minority and prevent us from becoming a democracy.

Second, I can't remember, are filibusters innately good or innately bad, Democrats? Republican? Bueller? Bueller?

If she were to launch into a piece about the possible origins and current whereabouts of Cotton-Eyed Joe, she'd be a hero in my book, regardless of the cause.

I subbed my story. Minor one, but having PP available to me did help me breathe easier for awhile when I couldn't afford health insurance.

Go Wendy Go!

Well, that's just stupid. So do you only have an opinion on things where you have a personal bias?

I discovered the president of my (Catholic) high school's right to life club had an abortion (got knocked up and for 7 or so months, she was getting larger in the tummy area, then went to Bloomington for a weekend trip - "visiting family" - and started losing a lot of the plumpness very quickly over the next couple of weeks). She still claimed the virginity card and spoke about the importance of the Christian value of purity at graduation.

Good times.

Waitaminnit, she actually has to talk?
It isn't like the U.S. Senate, where you can just mutter the word "filibuster" into your hand and nobody gets to vote?

Then nobody in possession of a vagina has any say in war-making. If you're never going to face an unwanted/unplanned/potentially lethal drafting and subsequent tour in a war zone, you have NOTHING to say.

Life begins at... Well, some point after conception but before birth. Basically before the fetus looks "cute". As long as it still looks like a gelatinous, vaguely human shaped ball, you can scrape it out with impunity.
