If I remember my Latin correctly, the masculine form of the name, 'D'Nakia', is only one letter off from the feminine 'Nakia' and the 'D' is soft in pronunciation.
As a result, I can see how the mix up occurred and am just surprised it doesn't happen more often.

A Clayton County woman's birth certificate has listed her as a man for the last 37 years, but she didn't notice the mistake until now. Nakia Grimes says she was horrified when state workers told her she'd need a doctor's note proving her gender to get it corrected.

Why? If they were fine with a mistake for 37 years, then the state must not care about the gender field. Just change it. Or erase it altogether, since it clearly doesn't matter.

2013-06-25 03:05:24 PM
Some things are just set in stone and impossible to change.  If the birth certificate says you are a man just go with it... be a man. It will be easier to reverse-Tootsie than fight bureaucracy.

Going to go with "no," here. Does "no" work for the state of Georgia?

Shouldn't a 37-year-old woman with a son already have quite a few doctors who could vouch for her vagina? I don't see what's so horrifying about it.

2013-06-25 03:09:34 PM
I don't see the big deal here, so she needs a doctors note, big deal. In an age where cross dressers, she-males and gender reassignment surgery is commonplace you have to expect these things.

In the South, an unregulated vagina,  free of interference from the government, for that long, is both fascinating and horrifying.

But it does matter. How will we know who to hate if there isn't some public record telling us whether or not you were born with a star on your belly?

Only if a the form says No is an acceptable answer, Georgia, has the worst bureaucracy I have ever seen.

My license plate got stolen when I was working out of state, I reported it to the local authorities and got a police report.  I went to get a new tag, the tag office said "I can't process an out of state police report the computer won't take the report number. Go over to the Sheriff's Office and tell them your tag was stolen and get them to write you a report. Then I can give you a new tag."

Ma'am, we've taken a look at the lining of your cervix, and apparently you're a man.  Don't argue with me, it's science.

To not know if you are a woman or a man must be a life of hell.

it must be indeed in our culture(s) of strict gender roles and codes

So she got an original GA DL but upon renewal they need the birth certificate?

2013-06-25 03:29:35 PM
Ooops.

It's not as big a fail as it looks.  Typo's like this happen.  A BC is an official document that is used for a lot of things. And because it is official, notarized documentatin IS required to make corrections.

Could the situation been handled a bit better?  Sure, but since this is Georgia where the clerks make mininum wage, you have to expect WalMart level service. Ms. Entitled needs to realize that screaming to the media makes her look like an idiot and really doesn't speed up the correction process.

OK. Got it. "new rules". What a crock. Why the hell would you need a birth certificate for a DL renewal?  I can understand the President but for a Drivers License?

Yup to renew you have to take a Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, 2 Utility Bill or Bank Statements in your name or Marriage License if they are in your spouses name.  All part of the Feds new drivers license initiative to keep illegals from driving I mean to fight the terrorists.

PA - no birth certificate was required

Did she pay back the extra salary she earned over all of those years?

Doesn't surprise me that it is Clayton County.  Their schools were unaccredited for a while.  DeKalb schools damn near are unaccredited and the county CEO is up on 14 felony charges.

Atlanta area politics is... interesting.

Nakia is both a male and a female name.
I know, that's not funny, but at least it's true, and a much better excuse for the confusion.

I also can see the confusion.  I wonder if copious amounts of intoxicating beverages, or hallucinogens, were involved with the conception.

has anyone used the Austin Powers reference yet?  Yes, darn...

Sleestack?  Yes, darn...

how about pointing out that your name was never part of the tribal language that you are claiming as part of your heritage, and more closely resembles something from the dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey?  And naming your kid after an historic/mythological(depending on your point of view) geographical city/area isn't the best way to usher in a good childhood, as he will be teased unmercifully by his classmates, because he doesn't have an apostrophe in his name.  Like all the other unique names mothers are coming up with these days.

/jebus, I get the unique point of view, but have the brains to research before you open your mouth and spew your crap
//I know a Stephaun, emphasis on the "au", who is a guy, and yes, black, who was teased unmercifully as a kid
///any kids I have will be named normally.  GF is black, and she agrees with me.  Greg(short for Gregory) for the boy, she gets to pick the girl's name, with my input and veto power

FOUR HOURS to renew my GA DL shortly after this was implemented and I have held a GA DL for over 30 years...

Most likely because she'd never before run into a civil service worker who wanted to use his/her comically tiny amount of authority to screw with the black lady before.

...which, in and of itself, is susprising.
