Authorities rushed to an Arizona woman's home after she called to report a brutal brawl on her back patio - between a ground squirrel and a gopher snake.

Really? They rushed there? Really? How is this even a police issue? We're they going to arrest the animals and put them in tiny handcuffs? And the snake had no hands, so how would that work?

Not sure this is entirely true or not, but I had a friend tell us that when he was in Iraq, they would catch spiders and scorpions and put them into an "arena" to fight 'til the death.

Was the MMA reference really needed in the headline? The squirrel was clearly adopting the unorthodox and unheralded 'feral paws' technique which predates any Kimura nonsense by millenia.

Another Squirrel V. Snake video:

 http://www.downvids.net/-squirrel-vs-snake--445109.html

Squirrels and birds HATE snakes.  Snakes crawl RIGHT INTO THEIR NESTS and EAT THEIR EGGS/BABIES IN FRONT OF THEM.  It's just what snakes do.

So, not surprisingly, at some point other small animals evolved an "all snakes must die on sight" policy.

Walker: Really? They rushed there? Really? How is this even a police issue? We're they going to arrest the animals and put them in tiny handcuffs? And the snake had no hands, so how would that work?

It's firefighters not police, they were probably called to just turn a hose on the two.  Considering it's Arizona they probably eliminated their wildlife control or there's one guy for whole county or something.  The firefighters probably showed up out of boredom and waited until someone who could capture the snake arrived.  The Gopher Snake wiki says that they can be easily confused for a rattlesnake so I can see calling 911 if the fight went on for too long and the caller didn't want to deal with a potentially venomous snake (or potentially rabid ground squirrel) herself.  Especially if it was on her patio where one of the two could escape under the house.

However this sentence:  Officials say the snake had a few wounds when it was released back into the desert while the squirrel had only a couple of injuries" doesn't tell us who was closer to winning.

The article also indicated the local fire department routinely handles snake calls.   They turn the venomous ones over to a local college, probably for a venom collection program

Nevermind the fact that there's snakes, scorpions, fire ants and all sorts of other critters that fight each other in AJ...and the rest of the state. That lady is going to be making a lot of useless phone calls. She should have let it play out. Squirrels go into full-ninja mode when a snake gets near a nest. It's worth watching.

The Bullsnake is outmatched.  Bullsnake has no venom and kills by constriction.  Its bite alone can't crush or chew anything, just a very light puncture and hang on while its constrictor body wraps around the writhing animal.

The pissed-off squirrel is far too energetic to allow itself to be wrapped and constricted.  Probably too large a body for the snake to get sufficient wraps around, too.  It's beside the point because AFAIK a snake would NEVER attempt to constrict in defense, only to eat prey.  And it's too big for that snake to eat, so it's not prey.

So all it can do is "strike" with hanging bites.  The bite can't tear out a chunk of flesh, it cannot do anything but superficial puncture wounds that don't actually cause organ injury or major blood loss, while the squirrel CAN chew the snake apart.  And the squirrel is FAR faster, although the snake can escape to cover that the squirrel cannot follow.

So the snake's in a losing battle here.  It can survive long enough to escape to a hiding place, but it cannot likely kill the squirrel.

Wildlife conservation has no interest in breaking up a naturally occurring fight between animals.  If allowed to escape, the snake will probably return to eat the squirrel's babies.  It may seem to be a paradox, but the answer is simple- don't do anything and let nature decide.  There is no need to "save" anything.

jaytkay: Link with video

/ Snake wasn't making much of an effort

Started writing my previous comment before you posted that, I stand by most of my statement.   It looks like the snake crawled up the chair to get away and ran out of real estate.  With the other posted video it looks like the squirrel attack plan is to get away from/dodge the head and cause the snake to bleed to death or at least slither away from as many wounds as possible.  Hard for the snake to leave when it goes the wrong way and gets stuck, so the squirrel could go rest between assaults.  Yet being curled around the chair it could still bite back on occasion.  Interesting stuff, thanks submitter, jaytkay for the actual video, and Oznog that shows how it would normally happen.

I also love the commentary from the firefighters; "Go get him Rocky."
