The house was vacuumed yesterday.  Pollen counts are way down.  And yet it's damn dusty in here.

I wonder if having a dog at home helps with PTSD for returning soldiers; I bet it does and I'd like to see some statistics on that.

Where's the video of that Marine throwing the puppy over the cliff?

Usually the Fark Videos I see are pretty lame, but this one is pretty good. Shared it with my friends. Dogs are awesome.

It's a very nice video, but one of my dogs reacts like that when I'm at the store for 20 minutes. He has issues. The other one only gets fired up when I'm away on a business trip for a few days.

My cats were kind of "meh" when they saw me for the first time after my deployment. Of course, they had just been stuffed in cages and driven for a few hours back to my house, so I'm not too surprised.

What would it be like, to feel that level of sheer JOY that the dogs were demonstrating?

Hermione_Granger...

Check out the Caturday thread later this week. If you have TF, you can jump in Thursday evening.
You'll be in understanding and very good company.

The extent to which you romanticise and fetishise returning soldiers is creepy. Are you trying to be North Korea?

Mine does that every evening. She's an Italian Mastiff and does this peculiar, wiggling, stiff-legged dance with her ears back and spine slightly arched. She only does this when greeting me. And she ALWAYS has some toy or bone in her mouth to offer as a gift, though she never really lets go of it, so it's more for show. I've seen her become distressed if she can't find something to bring me and she'll run all over until she finds some object to present.

Good deals with these soldiers coming home to so much love.

Dogs.....what do you expect? When I come back from vacation my cat cops a huge attitude on me.....turns her back and just meows over her shoulder...really short, vocal meows. Kind of like saying, "leave me again like that and I will claw your eyes out while you are sleeping."

They've received such a savage and merciless ass-farking at the hands of our government in the past decade, it gives us hope when we see them coming home to some affectionate greeting and maybe they aren't profoundly farked up with the PTSD and What Not.

Every soldier that returns home is one less being sent overseas to kill and maim in the name of Freedom.  Be happy that we can at least celebrate and romanticize their return home instead of being constantly fixated with how many brown people we managed to kill this week.

On a snarky note, I couldn't believe a "Sappy"-tagged link from Jezebel, figuring it'd be some sort of time-for-men-to-apologize thing.

On a serious note, Hermione: the grief recedes slowly, but it does--and you're left with a lifetime of warm memories. Plus, you can enjoy the huge personal satisfaction of having "been there" for your doggy right up to the very end. <hug>

I've seen the same scenes acted out in the UK with returning troops (noticed your "-ise" spelling and checked your profile).  Do a GIS for it.

My two Blabs greet me that way, but only briefly. They know when I come home it's dinner time (priorities).
I have a webcam in which I can see the dogs while I'm at work and it's funny, 4:30ish I can see them moving about and looking up the stairs, waiting for the wife or I to come home.

I didn't think that was sad at all, I thought it was pretty upbeat. Sad would be the guy coming home and his dog, bent with age and crippled with arthritis, tries to get up and falls down. Sad would be a soldier coming home with a leg missing and his dog knocking him down. Sad would be when the guy comes in and asks "where's Rover?" only to have his wife reply "it up and died".

But it's just a dog!  Dogs have no feelings!  Dogs can't remember what happened to them!

Next time someone's dog dies, remember this video.

Huh. All of those situations would make me laugh. Especially if the wife's actual words were "It up and died."

My father-in-law had a Jack-rat terrier named Gus, who went everywhere with him.  One morning he went out and about without Gus and sadly never made it back home.
It's been a year and every time a car door closes or a truck pulls into the driveway, Gus stands at attention in anticipation that it's my FIL returning from some long trip.

I imagine he'd react similarly to those dogs in the video if that did happen -- unfortunately it never will.

It's heartbreaking.

Dogs are awesome.
