I get this is some sweatshop, but you don't get severance pay if you keep your job.  A raise?  Maybe.

Hope they enjoy Chinese prison, I assume the authorities frown on pissing off foreign investors.

Yeah, I buy all my medical supplies from China, because of the pride they take in their work and the quality materials endemic to their supply chain.

I hope he gets a tiny scratch during his "incarceration" so he can apply one of his own company's band aids and get lead poisoning.

I went to a Chinese hospital once when I had the flu.  They gave me a cup of hot water.

I was under the impression of a few things, based on seeing this on the news this morning...

1.  He's the owner of the company
2.  He just outsourced a bunch of jobs to China
3.  The workers are pissed off because they think the entire company is moving, and not just one facility.
4.  A whole bunch of people from that one facility got laid off with no severence package.

Now, that last point is the worst.  If that's true, that's the worst thing a company can do to a dedicated worker, short of just killing them.

Who is right here?  Well, there seems to be an aweful lot of people that think the company is treating them very badly.  I'm gonna go with majority rule on this one.

For your act of rebellion against being forced (by biological necessity) into oppressive slave labor, you are hereby sentenced to be forced (by legal compulsion) into oppressive slave labor.

If you're life is hosed either way, you may as well do what you can to share your misery with the 1% for a few days.

Looking at TFA it looks like a bunch of people were laid off and received severance packages but those who still have jobs are demanding a similar compensation. However this is a very brief article and I did not see this on the news this morning.

Why choose?

...seriously though, given that they're able to hold hostages, the employees seem to be in firm control of the facility.

Indeed -- its so unfair when management withholds severence packages from employees who aren't being laid off.  WTF?

/ just goes to show, if they hadn't bothered with severence packages in the first place and simply cut the jobs, this whole confrontation could have been avoided

Maybe they could just burn the place and leave. That would be a un-peasant supplies firing of the factory manager.

Wait, what?!

The deffinition of a severence package is that, "your employment is severed.  Here's a package to keep you going while you look for work."
If you're still working there, how can you demand any damn thing.

Now this story makes less sense than before.

Based on NPR this morning the remaining employees feel the writing is on the wall and that the owner is asset stripping what remains before relocating the whole operation to India. Given a bunch of their co-workers got laid off with no severance and the company has stopped paying some of their suppliers the folks who are still there think a closure is imminent and want to at least get their severance and owed pay before the owner leaves town.

Apparently these situations are common in China, just not with foreign business owners. The employees position isn't that they have kidnapped their boss, just that nobody is allowed to leave the factory until the dispute is worked out.

I am wondering what is taking so long, fire them so they get the severance package.  In a communist country, it may be the only way out of a job.  Back in the old days of USSR the choice was work or jail.

That's why I have been shopping more at Menard's as oppose to Home Depot.  Menard's lets you know what city and state the product is from.  No I am not saying the whole store is "Made in USA", but for a couple dollars more you can get a shovel made in WI.
