I read somewhere that the dogs actually react to their handlers, not to what they smell.  If I, a white male in my mid 30s and a man, older of middle eastern decent, board a plane, but have yet to put our bags in to be loaded onto the plane, the bomb sniffing dog is more likely to wrongly alert the handler to the guy of middle eastern decent than me because the handler is going to already suspect the other guy over me.

Raug the Dwarf: basemetal: I have little confidence in all of those sniffing dogs.

Yeah, I thought we've already had tons of studies and hard science that say sniffing dogs are totally unreliable?

From training methods to success rate, it's kind of ridiculous.

well you need superior officers more intelligent than the TSA, so it shouldn't be all too surprising that the choice is dogs.
