Kiwimann: I'm not going to blame the kid for this, or call him a Darwin award chaser or anything.

Nice kid, playing hide and seek with some friends.  World needs more of those type of kids, not less.  fark all of y'all and sorry for his family's loss.

Playing hide and seek at 14, unless your playing it with a younger sibling, is kind of weird.
Plus, the "hide and seek" story sounds like BS. As many people have pointed out, the area surrounding the bull is an empty field. Do you see a lot of hiding places in an empty field?

That story is likely just what his friends told the campus cops.

KrispyKritter: maybe this is why statues are often placed on raised foundations of some sort.

a pedestal, perhaps.

It's probably the one off to the right of the picture.  Horn straight horizontal at about chest level.
LOL

Quantum Apostrophe: "when the horn pierced his chest."

No, no, the horn is inanimate, his chest bloodied the horn.

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for getting that out of the way early!

Man, there is nothing, and I mean nothing, that I hate more than paiding gonads.

Sounds like what happened to a guy I know.   Weird accident.  He fell on a knife four times.
I mean, that's the story his friends told.

Kid probably died because the "adults" pulled him off of the horn. Worst thing you could do to a sucking chest wound is to pull it out with nothing to put over it (and no pressure valve).

Unless, of course, if it got him right in the heart.

stoli n coke: GF named my left testicle thundercles: stoli n coke: Dedmon: He's 14. He's still a child. For all we know, the other two 'adults' could be 18 years old themselves. Running around a dark field early in the morning isn't exactly a controversial thing. Couple that with the lack of forethought that doesn't develop until the early 20s, and the black bull horn, on a black bull, in a black background. Somebody's baby made an error of judgement, as a 14 year old, and is now dead.

What's with the kneejerk reaction to hate on and blame the child, almost as if to say the child deserved to die? Almost as to say Of COURSE you don't run in a large empty field out in front of a large publicly accessible museum, you're certainly going to die!

It took you till your twenties to learn not to run up to a large, metal object with sharp metal points?
Also, this wasn't a field, this was on a college campus. And usually, if a 14-year old is out running around on campus at 5 A.M. on a Saturday, it's a safe bet they didn't just come from early bible class.

not only that, but it is not hard to see by starlight or moonlight.

Especially on a weekend where the moon was the brightest it's been in years.

So, are you saying the 14 year old child certainly deserved to be impaled to death, because the field wasn't a field, and the bull might be easy to see in the moonlight?

Now that I see the picture, if they were to put some form of border to stop accidents from happening...

2013-06-25 01:52:44 PM
For everyone saying "There should have been some sort of border!" "They put it too close to the path!": Those statues have been there for 10 years that I remember, very possibly more, and this is the first problem with them. Most people just have the sense to say either "There are some giant metal statues that could really hurt if I ran in to them. I should probably be careful!" or "I shouldn't be trespassing and doing dumb things at 3 in the morning!"
No, the kid did not deserve to die, but his stupidity shouldn't ruin everything for everyone else.

Oznog: Russ1642: He could just as easily have run into a wall, down some stairs, into traffic, or into a tree, but because it was a statue they're going to blame the statue and not his lack of a functioning brain.

I'm kinda divided.  Just knowing people, someone's gonna run full-on into that about every few years.  It just happens.  Only way to prevent it would be chainlink and that defeats its aesthetic purpose.

It's probably the one off to the right of the picture.  Horn straight horizontal at about chest level.

chain link would work, but I'd recommend putting up on a pedestal like most statues or just raising the ground there up a few feet surrounding the new area with some bricks to keep the dirt in and the kids out.

There's a great song lyric in there somewhere.

No doubt, the family will make a lot of money off of this.

Too bad the kid died.

Am I the only one who asks the burning question, " WTF do we need statues of cattle for anyway" ? What purpose do they serve?
