(Wired)   Photo collection of the saddest looking zoo animals you'll see today. Or maybe they're just sleeping. Or thinking "hey, where's that tasty looking guy with my lunch?" Who knows   (wired.com) divider line 5

Yeah, most of those are "animal vaguely looking at something."

If you can look at a photo of a bird and tell me if it's happy or sad, I think you're making shiat up.  Maybe if you saw a video and could tell from its behavior, but it's a goddamn bird looking somewhere.  They don't have facial expressions.  What sadness are you seeing exactly that's not a product of your imagination?

It's not art if the animals are "vaguely looking at something"

I have to agree that none of these were sad looking at all. I was expecting a crying Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl or something.

here's a hint.  animals do not have the same level of complex emotions as people.  they also do not communicate in the same manner as people.

taking human facial expression communication cues and applying them to animal facial expressions is as reliable as reading a language you have never seen before, in an alphabet you have never studied, and assuming that, everytime you see a set of characters that vaguely resembles something familiar, you know the full extent of the text you're reading.

i jokingly anthropomorphize my cat.  thinking, oh, she's sad, she's pissed, she's confused... bla bla bla.  it's all nonsense. she's probably just indifferent and that facial expression took the least effort.

however, I do know certain communicative efforts.  for example, when she drinks from the sink, she wants fresh water.  so i fill her bowl with fresh water.  when she flings shiat out of the litter box, she's an asshole.  it either means, clean the litter box, i'm bored, i'm pissed, or i missed the box, whoops.  let's collect dust from the bathroom floor and pile it around my shiat.

Several animals in that article looked stuffed, and therefore incapable of any sort of emotion.
