Surool: mat catastrophe: gingerjet: Ten minutes ago I downloaded a trailer from Apple and played it at 1080p on a Windows box.  This author does know that all the trailers are available via iTunes right?  Right?  No?  Then the author is a douche.

Back in the dark ages, we would have been appalled to think that we'd have to download and install a proprietary piece of software to access something that could easily be offered to anyone, using any browser.

My, how times have improved.

How is it not viewable to anyone on any browser?

I didn't say it wasn't viewable. I said "accessible", which is actually the set in which "viewable" exists, I suppose. So, let's go back to "downloadable" - which is a ponderous word.

Shakin_Haitian: Broktun: Mikey1969: Etchy333: Triumph: I don't know what the author is puzzled about. It's all about control of content. With the quicktime format, people grab trailers and re-edit them all sorts of ways.

This is probably the main reason for the change, but it could also benefit them in simplifying the content delivery network.  One less thing for them to test on the site, and probably a big chunk of bandwidth usage eliminated.

I think you're going to have more bandwidth issues from people tryuing to stream, having it buffer, hang up, restart, crash, etc... With downloads, they may slow down and speed up, but they don't annoy the users as much, resulting in them hitting "download" over and over trying to get it to either resume, or wake up and start playing.

Fark Apple, I hate streaming, because I have yet to see why people get major wood over it. I have a good connection, a fast computer, a decent router, and I still have yet to watch any two streaming items in a row without having buffering issues, or have the thing skip a few times. It's not a lot, but I don't see how it is supposed to herald the end of being able to pop in a disk and have it play perfectly.

I stream to Apple TV and never seem to have problems.  10 second of buffering after pressing "play" then all is well.  That is less time than a DVD spooling up and going thru the FBI anti-piracy page, then the previews that can not be skipped, and maybe and advertisement or two.

Ten seconds? Is Apple TV that crappy? Netflix is three or four seconds tops.

No it's not that crappy. And it tends to have a much better quality image than Netflix content.

Please post a screenshot of you viewing it from within Lynx.

I would not be terribly shocked if someone out there had made an h264 to ascii-art conversion hack.

Apple raging is oh, so fashionable I realize. However, they do not own the product being withdrawn... and all the usual crap is being brought up as if Apple did something bad. That is very typical for Apple whiners.

Granted for a moment that the column completely misses that point, I think everyone's aware that Apple pretty much has the clout at this point to tell the movie industry, "fark off". They did it to the music industry, after all.

But, it's pretty typical for Apple fanboys to ignore that sort of thing.

I'm a fanboy for saying Apple's power is limited? It's hilarious to see you sad hater types sling "fanboy" when you don't have a rational argument.

There's nothing in it for Apple to keep the trailers downloadable. They make money off the iTunes music they sell. Why try to strong arm the movie industry over digital rights of movie commercials when there is exactly nothing to gain? Maybe you can come up with an intelligent response for a change.

You're a fanboy because you're dribbling a bunch of trite "arguing on the internet" crap into a more-or-less completely irrelevant debate and making pretty gross assumptions about the agenda of people who think you're a tad bit silly for doing so. I'm on a PC here, cowboy. WindowsXP. Sure, I had a Mac. Loved it. Hated to see it burn itself up like it did, but I didn't run out and camp at the Mac store til they opened the next day to replace it.

But that's beside the point, and doesn't cover the whole "intelligent response" qualifier you put out there. Of course, we all know that what people mean when they say that is, "I want you to say something I agree with", because there is no such thing as rational debate anymore. There is no marketplace of ideas, just a great big chimpanzee pen where we all throw shiat at each other and the asshole with the biggest megaphone wins.

I'm just a bit tired of playing that game, so pardon me if I excuse myself from it. You can go and fume that I won't "argue" with you anymore but I honestly don't even know what the fark we are supposed to be arguing about anyway, and I will be utterly farking damned if I am going to waste one more second of my increasingly short farking life looking through the shiat in this chimp pen to find it.

Good day, sir.
