The Minnesota Nazi are nicer because they can't fire their guns, having had no previous experience with guns.

Well, this has a Fark connection because Farker James Lileks knows the guy, and they're all flabbergasted all this blew up. It's not everyday somebody you know gets accused of being a war criminal.

He wasn't a Nazi, or a German. He was in a Ukrainian group that was SS lead.

I know that might seem pedantic but Ukrainians never needed to be German or Nazis to rustle up a good pogrom or two.

some quotable lines, some cool scenes, but as a document, it just doesn't really hold up.  animal house is still fantastic, caddyshack, the jerk, 48 hours, some others i'm spacing on (trading places!), coming to america (a bit later but still in the "early 80s comedy" genre) hold up but Blues Brothers doesnt'.

neither does Fletch.  go watch it.  count the laughs.  at least, if you don't fall asleep.

Please let me know where you live so I can glue your gas pedal to the floor.

Besides, it's largely about the music and this still holds up.  Sometimes I have it running in the background when I'm working just for the soundtrack.

Fletch is dated because they decided to use too much 80's music synthesizer stuff.  I'm thinking that film must have come on the heels of Beverly Hills Cop.  Otherwise, its still pretty entertaining.

Blues Brothers is fun watching because of the musical scores (IMHO).  Seeing Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, etc.

concede that for the most part....that was a bona fide, tight motherfarking band, and the guest spots are cool.  but as a document - the plot, the jokes, the pacing, the everything - it is just mlehhhh.

/google the Hanson band (yes, those guys), they did a song 3-4 years ago that mimics the Ray Charles scene, with the big dance number in the streets of chicago.  i think Weird Al cameos in it.  the song is tight and the video cool as shiat!

re the 80s fascination iwth "cop comedies" (flethc, 48 hours, beverly hills, the police academy franchise, that billy crystal / gregory hines movie, arguably bill murray's "Quick Change"), "Midnight Run" is way funnier.  you'd think Chevy Chase would make a funnier movie than Grodin and DeNiro, but Fletch is basically a one-watch movie.  Midnight Run is still farking hilarious, despite not being a comedy per se.

Quick Change also has aged very well.  granted it is a bit later than the caddyshacks and blues brothers, but is still kinda in that genre.  but the larger point is, Fletch is wildly overrated.

That headline reminds me of WITNESS, where Harrison Ford's character was reputed to be an Ohio Amish, rather than Kentucky, hence his violent ways.

ehh.....i haven't seen all his movies but i wouldn't say that. he was great in caddyshack, equally so in Three Amigos.  Spies Like Us, while a crap movie, he was pretty good in.  christmas vacation?  come on now.  yeah he made some crap movies like "deal of the century" and probably some others, but he was pretty funny.

i'm aware he was on some recent sitcom (NBC, i think) but i didn't see it.  all i know is some story about him getting into some real-life trouble with the writers or some such.  i heard a guy on like, marc maron podcast or nerdist, whatever, that had guest starred on whatever show and he basically said Chevy Chase was a massive douche and pain in the ass to work with.  something about a leaked voicemail or some shiat?  or leaked emails or smoething.  dunno.

/haven't met the actual guy, but I have met his son and daughter-in-law. Those two are good people, and I'm sure it's just devastating to see his father on the AP wire being touted as a Nazi. Especially when they say in the article that it's still subject to investigation and verification.

It's almost 70 years ago. He has a family, grandchildren, etc... Unless they can document some true atrocities, I hope they don't just run him through the mud for what turns out to be nothing.

I think its sort of mentioned above, but Chevy Chase does well if he's with a bunch of fairly talented (and funny) actors.  If it is just him supporting the whole film, he just does that whole "I'm being a dick" schtick. So Caddyshack - lots of good characters/actors in that one.  Three Amigos had Steve Martin and Martin Short.  Fletch, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Cops and Robbersons (ugh) not so good.

The one exception is some of the Family Vacation films (Christmas, the first one and arguebly the European one) where its primarily a Chase vehicle.  Maybe because of better writing, or possibly because he downplays being a dick and more of the middle class bumbling family guy, it works. Just my .02

Well, look, nothing caps off an evening of Cossack dancing, girls in brightly coloured skirts, and perogie contests like burning down a Jewish village or two.

Trotskyists were another set of mass murderers who lost out in the 1930s Soviet power play.  Morally, there was NO difference. It's no coincidence that most of them gravitated toward extreme right-wing authoritarianism, since they cared far more about power than progress or justice.
