Awesome?  No.

A decent human being? Okay.

2013-06-24 02:40:38 PM
No, I don't remember her.  She doesn't seem especially "awesome", either, perhaps "fairly well adjusted", but not awesome.

Yeah that sounds about right. Good for her! I'm glad the internet was able to be kind to her.

Nice lady.

Hey I want money too. I'd be the same asshole I am now I promise.

Then she shouldn't have signed up to be a bus monitor. It'd be like hiring a cop that would just start crying if a perp was mean to him.

What a $700,000 smile looks like.

Dragonflew: "Children are evil monsters."

Children are the mirror by which we see that *humans* are evil monsters.
Children just haven't yet learned when they can let it out and when they ought to hold back, so that it doesn't come back to harm them.

But don't worry. They'll get better at it.

Pretty much what I figured.  Sweet old lady gets windfall and retires.  I'm a little more interested in whats going on with the kids.

I'm sure they will grow up realizing how much they hurt the lady and reform. Maybe start public speaking against bullies.

/who am I kidding. They will star in more videos showing how pathetic and assholish they are

Isn't she the one who didn't do her job controling the kids on the bus.  Instead of becoming competant at her job she quit?  Well, that doesn't sound awesome to me.

Also, was she ever a dude?

When this story broke, I couldn't decide if people were giving her money out of sympathy or because they wanted her to retire because she was so horrible at her job.

This woman is as far from awesome as one can get, subtard.

a bus monitor that gets overrun by the children on the bus is about as useful as a bricklayer without arms. whoever hired her for that position should be fired.

I think it's funny that the kids who bullied her got a $700,000 middle finger imprinted on their faces.

Some of you don't seem to understand what a bus monitor's job is.  Karen was there to look out for the children's safety.  Their safety was not threatened, so she did not exert her authority.  If only more cops had such wisdom and discipline!  Yeah, she is awesome.

Criticize a bus monitor when she lets a child be bullied or beaten, or lets him stick his head out of the bus window, or lets the bus drive back to the garage with a child still aboard.  Don't criticize her for refusing to stoop to the level of a sixth grade punk.

Does she have to pay income taxes on that money?

wambu: Does she have to pay income taxes on that money?

Generally, no.  In the U. S., any taxes on gifts are usually due from the giver.   You can give any number of people up to $13K each in a year, tax-free.  There's also a once-in-a-lifetime tax-free gift option to any individual; over a million, IDK what the current limit is.  Gift tax would be 20% of the amount over the limits.

She had zero control over those kids after riding with them for an entire school year.  Believe me, if the kids were comfortable mocking her to her face, they were probably just as comfortable with telling her to fark off is she told them not to stick their heads out the window or whatnot.

Yeah, but then if she got up, and treated those crusty urchins the way they needed to be treated, their parents would have filed a lawsuit against her, and the district, saying she butt-phuqed all the kids from row 5 back to where the fine African-American children were sitting at the back of the bus.

I've never understood all the love for her.  She was supposed to be the bus monitor.  Part of that job is keeping the unruly kids in line, not letting them bully other kids, etc.  She couldn't even keep them from bullying herself.

To me, that doesn't make her super duper and deserving of a million dollars in donations, it makes her an idiot who was being paid by the taxpayer to do a job she was incapable of doing.

2013-06-24 05:33:03 PM
Yeah, i rememeber that bus monitor who got hordes of money for survivng bullying for a whole few hours, meanwhile I went through 3 years of hell in Junior high that included being treated like less than human, people trying to push me down stairs,  death threats and horrible panic attacks I subsequently started having and  haven't completely shaken 25 years later.

She was a bus driver for 20 years, a monitor for the last three.  It's unlikely that she would have lasted so long if she was unable to control kids when it mattered.

That bus ride made national news and resulted in $700k changing hands and several children being suspended for a whole year.  Obviously, she lost control at a time when it mattered.

Funny, when I was a kid I was never an asshole to anyone, because my parents taught me that it hurts people.
Parents are pieces of shiat these days and those apples don't fall far from the tree.

All of that mattered to other people.  It didn't matter to the safety of the children, and that's all that mattered to Karen. The bullies don't matter to her now.  The national attention never mattered to her.  The money barely matters to her.

She's a real honey badger, and honey badgers are AWESOME!
