Passive aggressive doormat writes blog post, sells it to Slate.

Film at 11.

Yeah, I'm sure you were suffocated by the loss of those three inches.  Do you farking sit with your head against the seat in front of you?

The trays adjust.  You should, too.  Or take a Xanax and STFU.

I'm mystified by people like this. If someone reclines in front you you then recline your own seat. I'm definitely going to recline the second wheels go up if I'm tired and need a nap which happens often. Getting up at 5am to make a flight when I was out with customers until 1am requires sleep -somewhere-.

2013-06-24 01:55:18 PM
Do what I do: Reserve yourself a seat in an exit row.  Leg room for daaaaays.

If the person in front of you reclines their seat, you recline yours.  Then everyone will be reclined, have just as much room, and not the slightest bit more comfortable.

That didn't work for me when I was in the last row in non-reclining seats.  I'll never reserve those again ...

If you sit with your knees braced correctly, you can prevent the chair in front of you from reclining. Just sayin'.

The seats are made to recline.  Everyone is ENTITLED to use their reclining seats during the portion of the flight where that is permitted.  The end.

2013-06-24 02:00:38 PM
You're free to recline your seat into my lap and be a massive douche if you want to.  And if my knee just happens to jam into your seat every 5 minutes, particularly while you're trying to take a sip of a drink or appear to be dozing off, I apologize in advance.   I'm clumsy.

2013-06-24 02:01:00 PM
i just repeatedly jam my knee into the middle lower area of the seat if someone in front of me reclines.  i usually get 2 dirty looks and then the seat goes back to normal.

and I agree,  they should not install reclining seats in coach.

Except for the guy in the very last row whose seat doesn't recline, but he deserves it for sticking his carryon in the bin over row 8 before schlepping his dumb ass all the way to the back of the plane.

The important thing is that you're mad at the other passengers and not the airlines.

/Who am I kidding, the other passengers suck

You are not entitled to take away my space, which I paid for, which you are doing when you recline. I don't need your head in my lap. You're not my type.

You should only sit in the very back of school buses, movie theaters, and 10th grade English class.

2013-06-24 02:03:08 PM
I'm 6'2", which makes me a total hypocrite when it comes to reclining seats.  That extra inch at knee level was all I had and now I'm splayed out immodestly into my neighbors' space.  The recliner in front of me is now the focus of all my cosmic hate.

But if I want to recline I should be free to do so because I need the extra space just to feel normal.

2013-06-24 02:03:46 PM
Feel free to recline and feel my knees jabbing into your spine. I don't even have to do it purposely since I am tall.

2013-06-24 02:04:26 PM
she even admitted that she's under 6 ft tall so it can't be that much of a problem. Get a seat on an exit row or bulk-head or buy a first class ticket if you want to complain.

FTFA:

Or else there are those, like me, who refuse to be so rude as to inconvenience the passengers behind us.

1) You're a sucker if you don't recline you seat when 90+% of the other people are doing it.

2) What do you want, a cookie?

People are assholes because they recline in a seat that was designed to recline?

I will caveat that reclining your seat during meal service makes you a dick. Though usually the stewardess will tell you to put your seat up.

You must not be very tall.

Many coach seats (airline dependant) offer little to no room my my knees.   If there's no overhead room and I'm forced to place my bag under the seat in front of me, my knees butt up against the tray rails.  Reclining my own seat doesn't necesarily offer relief in those situations.

/sounds like somebody else could use a Xanax too...
//csb time-my worst flight ever:  a short-clad woman's leg fat rolling under the armrest for the entirety of the 8 hour flight causing 8 hours of intimate sweaty leg on leg action (I was also short clad).
///I'll take tray frame to the kneecap any day over that.

2013-06-24 02:06:30 PM
As one of those 6+ people he mentions, when someone leans their seat back I just lean forward a bit so I can look them straight in the eye, caress their hair, and sing them the traditional bedtime songs of my people as the sweet smell of Tequila, emanating from my breath, lulls them to sleep.

Person A reclines their seat.
Person B now has no space. Person B's back is also uncomfortable in the upright position. Person B would like to also recline.
Person C refused to let Person B recline their seat.

IMHO Person C is a ginormous douche. I'm 5'10" with long legs. My knees are not even close to the seat in front of me. Anyone who says they don't have room for their knees has an impossible physique or slouches like a mofo. STFU and stop making life hell for the poor bastard in front of you, jerk.

If you do not fit in an airline seat, pay for an upgrade. Exit rows and bulkheads cost $20 or something.

I paid for my space which includes however far the seat reclines. I paid and am entitled to be as comfortable as possible. I didn't pay for your comfort level.

2013-06-24 02:07:42 PM
"No!" she snapped. "We paid for these goddamn seats, and we'll recline them if we want to." So then everyone was angry: I was angry because I had no room, and she was angry because I passive-aggressively kicked her seat once every 15 minutes-often enough to be annoying, but not often enough todefinitely be on purpose.

Joke's on you, asshole.  I'll be passed out and won't feel your kicking.

No apologies here.  I recline my seat every time.  The purchase of my ticket gives me license to use the resource of my seat and the space it takes up.  Yours does the same.
And jamming your knees into my back?  Are you really sure you want to physically assault me like that?  Probably not the best idea.
STFU and deal with it.

why not in addition to a vomit bag, they put a damned feces/urine bottle in there

Holy shiat....what kind of a passive aggressive biatch or asshole would hand out one of these?

This is a Knee Defender™ Courtesy Card™

I am using Knee Defender.  Knee Defender is a small plastic device that helps me protect myself by limiting how much the seat in front of me can recline.  I wanted to let you know about this and provide the following information:
___ Unfortunately, my legs are so long that if you recline your seat at all it would immediately bang into my knees.
___  As best I can estimate, you could recline your seat about ____ inches without banging into my knees.  If you would like to recline your seat this much at some point during the flight, please let me know and I will adjust my Knee Defender so that is possible.
___ If you would like to recline your seat at some point during the flight, please let me know and I will try to adjust myself and my Knee Defender so that it can be done safely.
I realize that this may be an inconvenience.  If so, I hope you will complain to the airline.  Maybe working together we can convince the airlines to provide enough space between rows so that people can recline their seats without banging into other passengers.*
Thank you for your understanding.

-  YOUR FELLOW PASSENGER

*You're not going to convince the airlines to provide more space.....not unless you want to pay A LOT MORE for a ticket.  Get real.

Get an exit row seat, or pay more to get one of those seats (economy comfort/even more space/whatever) seats with more legroom. I understand your problem, mr. author, and I agree that it is a problem, but it's a problem you can solve by buying the right seat, instead of demanding some sort of government ban to ruin everyone else's good time. Also, I'd never go on a trans-oceanic flight with seats that wouldn't recline... the mere thought of it makes my back hurt.

2013-06-24 02:10:05 PM
While I agree with the author in spirit, the point could probably be made in a manner sounding less douchey.

Please do, please light up during a flight. I'll be keeping an eye out for you on the news. And laughing.

My knees have never been anywhere near the seat in front of me, and I'm not THAT short.  Do you guys have some kind of freak mutant femurs or something?  Most of the motion from reclining is up near head/chest level, not knee level, so I find it really makes no difference for knee room.
