I am leaning towards this becoming a suicide destination once again. Our tower is to die for.

In Caracas there's a 45-story office building abandoned by its developers. So the locals moved in.

Is that near Ekaterinburg on Taviana?  Not a bad industrial town...

It's a construct.

What about the Ryugyong Hotel?

2013-06-24 12:25:30 PM
I guess the Ryugyong Hotel is no longer "abandoned," now that it's technically "an empty shell of a building with a nice facade and a cell phone tower on top."

For some reason I read that in Latka Gravas's voice.  "And tourists come from all over to see the Leaning Tower of Yekaterinburg."

At 220m, it is taller than Centro Financier Confinanzas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centro_Financiero_Confinanzas), One Meridian Plaza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Meridian_Plaza), and the Singer Building (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singer_Building). It's shorter than the arguably-abandoned 330m Ryugyong Hotel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryugyong_Hotel).

Also, for towers, Zendstation (303m) collapsed in 2011 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zendstation_Smilde), Konigs Wusterhausen (243m) collapsed in 1972 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_tower_%28K%C3%B6nigs_Wusterhaus en %29), NSS Annapolis (243m) was razed in 1999 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSS_Annapolis), and WOR (232m) was dismantled after an airplane strike in 1956 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WOR_TV_Tower).

All were taller than Ekaterinburg.

Soviet Engineering Solution #1 : Add more concrete until it straightens up.

Neat. Reminds me of the housing complex in Judge Dredd.... the recent film.  Not the crappy one with Sly back in the 90's.

Yekaterinburg looks kind of nice.  Not drop-all-my-plans-and-go-there-now nice, but kind of cosmopolitan and leafy and maybe someplace I'd visit on a trip to Russia.  Pictures can lie, though. Anyone been there?

@ Raoul Eaton:

Both of my sons have been there.  My daughter-in-law if from the city.  I have only heard really nice things about it.  Just go in June, I believe that they have their summer (70's) during the first couple of weeks of the month.  I think it being located in the Ural Mountains has something to do with it being winter all year long.

Linked at the bottom of the article, the coolest place I've ever been. Though they forgot to mention the puffins.

Yeah, it happens to be a puffin preserve, just in case the 1500 year old monastery made of dry laid stone on a steep, remote rock in the middle of the North Atlantic wasn't enough.
