I figure with those cameras, that the legislation where the private business gives the locality a cut of the fines was the bribe.

Ah, the old "if every single thing isn't public, then transparency is a lie" gambit. Popularly used Every Single Time Someone Wants To Be In A Meeting But Can't.

I am aghast at submitter's insinuation that politicians in Chicago might be slightly corrupt.

Emanuel's office is following the long-standing - and completely legal - Illinois practice of withholding records related to bids until a contract decision is finalized.

Why are people still falling for this scam? In a couple years the lawsuits against the company will make their way to the courts and a large portion of the money will be given back to the citizens and the cameras will come back down...  in the meantime, we waste how much money?

fark this stupid country.

Translation from journalist-speak into English = "completely legal" is the way a reporter writes "a practice that would be thoroughly corrupt but for the thoroughly corrupt legislature making it 'completely legal' ".

One of the best laws in NC is that all of the traffic ticket money has to go to education. The cops rarely hand out tickets unless you're actually being dangerous because there's no money in it for the departments or local government. They installed red-light camera here a few years ago but the schools sued to because the cut of the money that the red-light company was getting actually belonged to them. The schools won and the cameras went away since there was no profit to be made.

While this article is of course of interest to anyone living in Chicago, I fail to see the point to somehow blaming Obama for Emanuel's practices. How remote does the connection have to be before it stops being Obama's fault? "The girlfriend of the first cousin of Obama's childhood schoolmate's stepfather was arrested for shop lifting. Why does Obama condone shoplifting?"

Obama personally orchestrated this, just like the IRS thing and pulling the trigger on Ambassador Stevens, right Subby?

I wish it was that easy.

We'll see how long it will be before they are taken down or at all (remember the toll roads were supposed to be tolls only until they were fully paid for... a lie that never happened... gov't does not give up their access to your money).

Obviously subby is just trolling and completely oblivious to pretty much the entire history of Chicago and Illinois politics.

That's right!  Or Indiana.  Or Wisconsin.

Anyone that visits Chicago on a regular basis will be affected by this... they'll install SPEED CAMERAs around areas where the speed limit drops (schools/parks).

The people who will be profiting from this BIG BROTHER bullshyat will be the same assholez who got the city meter contract (NOT THE CITIZENS).

For FARK SAKES, if you're robbing your citizens do IT FOR THE CITY not some BANKS or HEDGE FUNDS!

Yeah, I admit something gets lost through the objectivity dialect.

Seriously!  It's like corruption is a local practice that is quaint and normal... like a southern drawl.

Most butthurt submitter in America, submits butthurt headline to butthurt admins to be posted on the most butthurt tab on Fark ever, won't let anybody watch while mods and admins count bribes to allow rampant trolling and wanton butthurtery.

Fark you uneducated douchebag.

1) These are SPEED cameras, not red light camera
2) Red light cameras typically have the yellow light adjusted from the normal 1.5+ seconds to switch to red to 1s or less.
3) Red light cameras INCREASE accidents where they are placed.

/Go lick big brothers boots somewhere else you troglodyte.

OR - As a resident of Chicago, you can learn the intersections that have them.

It's not hard... they usually have 3 large poles with cameras facing both ways.

/Pro-tip: Even when turning right on a yellow, stop fully to assume it will be red... or you will get a ticket.

Dude, you need to get your sarcasm detector into the shop pronto. I am the most vociferous opponent of red light cameras you are likely to meet.
Also, with regard to "1)" above, you wanna know how I know you didn't read the SECOND and THIRD words in the article?

/may all your yellows be long!

It's important because the public has a right to know how they're being bilked, ostensibly "for their own good" but in the case of red-light cameras it's just not so.
