I hope somebody's got a stool handy to help this guy down from the cross that he's nailed himself to. Christ.

It IS TIME magazine.  They're just like "Parade", but without the healthy Sunday newspaper circulation numbers.

People still read Time magazine?
People still read magazines?

Klein is a shoddy "journalist."   Not surprised the bacon of his brain can't wrap around some facts.

for people who supposedly dont have dogma and shiat like us Jeebus freaks, some of you atheists get really preachy and defensive about your non-belief system.

There wasn't anything in TFA, nor has there been anything in this thread, resembling preachiness or defensiveness.

I think this is the point TFA is driving at: people making sh*t up about those they don't like.

Atheists are extremely oversensitive, suggesting extreme insecurity. What other collective becomes upset when a national publication issues demonstrable lies about them?

better to defend truth than flying spaghetti monsters.

funny how you don't see organized groups of secular humanists giving out hot meals

Unless they're organizations specifically set up to provide aid to Oklahoma this is about as relevant as pointing out TIME's lack of aid to Oklahoma.

When there is a direct shot taken at secular humanists some of the secular humanists get upset. It's not exactly unexpected.

THIS...

My take on a "real" atheist, he wouldn't give a crap and just do the things he does because he believes it's the right thing to do.

To have to be part of a group yourself and whine about your group being crapped on, simply defeats the purpose of not believing in a deity.

Part of the whole get over yourselves, you aren't a precious snowflake nor special, nor smarter, nor anything more (or less) just because you choose to have a different belief.

Anyone that's part of this whining group is doing the exact thing that you whine about religious organizations of doing.

We shouldn't be that surprised, doesn't Time put Jesus on their cover once a year?

And talk about efficiency.  One throw away line in an article is enough to drum up all this attention for Time and probably boost their sales quite a bit, just for stickin' it to the heathens.  Regardless of how wrong he was, he'll be rewarded for driving clicks and sales.

You don't have to believe in invisible god friends to be preachy. Just like you don't need to be a priest to rape little boys (though I hear it helps).

2013-06-24 09:16:18 AM
I'll even add...

instead of making an "atheist goup" for providing assistance and relief, just create a freaking group without resorting to grouping yourself.. just have an organization that provide assistance and just don't care about who joins as long as they do their part and don't bring anything of religion into it.

My southern uncle tried to give me the hard sell that Christ was coming back soon a few times not long before he died. I asked him to please stop bringing it up, because I'm not a believer. When I said that, he asked me what I meant, and I flatly stated that I'm an atheist. "You worship Satan?" he asked. That's what atheist means to a sizable number of people out there.

For all the people saying that Atheists are making a huge deal out of this you should probably go learn what a blog is.

Writing a blog post is pretty much the exact opposite of making a huge deal out of something.

Credit where credit is due. If you do work and someone else tries to claim the effort as their own, then you actually have an ethical obligation to confront the persons who do it.

At least that's what Anton LaVey would say.

The cover of time reminds me of that episode of the 80s Twilight Zone revival, or perhaps Amazing Stories, where the couple falls between time to the moments where the set designers are creating the next minute. It's where Amelia Earhart and other missing persons went.

The non-stamp collectors want us to know that they're just as organized and active as the stamp collectors.  The more freak outs they display in events like this, the less credibility their claim of "we're not a religion" has.  The sad thing is that their official doctrine seems to consist of nothing more than scaled attempts to mirror theistic religions, with an emphasis of hate towards said religions and their members.  A main difference being that the majority of theists vocally denounce groups like WBC for their hatred, atheists generally don't seem to mind when their own speak out in hatred.

Why aren't those groups tax exempt?   Are the allergic to paperwork or are they actually paying shareholders?

They seem like classic 501(c)(4) organizations, seems like someone is just too lazy to pick up a pen.

Well, here's the thing. In order to better provide charitable services, one needs access to a charitable organization. In order to participate in a charitable organization, one must be part of a group. Additionally, participation in said group provides things like a support network, idea exchange, and all those other wonderful things that come along with being part of a community of like minded individuals.

Not believing in a supernatural entity has somehow become a focal point of "You're an attention whore" when it comes to a blog post biatching about misrepresentation, yet we still have NFL quarterbacks praising baby jesus for a touchdown.

I was unaware; I had been under the impression that "extreme" was itself generally credibility neutral, unless spelled "Xtreme".

As an atheist I'm not part of a group, I don't have any "atheist doctrine", and I feel absolutely no responsibility for what otherr people, who happen to not believe in gods, say or do.
They are not my people.

Christians, Jews, Muslims, gun owners.... Hell, they get upset when people publish things that are true about them.

God, you atheists are so whiny. All this guy did was completely, knowingly lie about secular relief efforts.

Get over yourselves!

2013-06-24 09:26:34 AM
Joe Klein is the ultimate example of the guy who writes a story by beginning with the narrative, then gathering facts, vignettes and quotes to illustrate it. He probably just thought of that as a throwaway, urban-snob-self-deprecative line thrown in as a bone to the flyover-state church people he'd normally sneer at (or assumes his readers would sneer at).

Oh, and being an atheist doesn't automatically make you a secular humanist.

He's got a point. A lot of Farkers still try to claim atheism is the non-proselytizing equivalent of "not collecting stamps". Speaking as a lifelong not-collector of stamps, I've never joined a community outreach group of fellow not-collectors, nor do I see any point in ever doing so. It's debatable whether atheism compares to a religion (and it will continue to be hotly debated in these threads until the last mb of Fark lies crumbling in the recycle bin of history), but I think we can at least agree that for some people, it's a crusade. (I imagine George Carlin felt a little slighted that he was never able to hammer that point into the public consciousness more effectively.)
