I get it that he's important, but he's 94. He's had a longer run than most, especially considering what he's been through. Let him go.

There's really only 2 people left in the world that are mostly considered unalloyed, secular saints - Mandela and the Dalai Lama. I can't think of anyone else with their stature, and when they pass, something deep will have been lost.

Yeah.  He got to dance in the stands when his country hosted the World Cup.  Turn off the cameras, make him comfortable, walk away.

This isn't the first time I've seen the headline, and the guy's in his 90s.

I expect his "RIP" thread to appear within the week.

Look on the bright side.  At one point in Mandela's life he would have called you a liar if you'd have told him he'd die of natural causes at the age of 94.

Eh.  Bad adaption, sure, but the movie wasn't horrible.  Plus, Daniella Kertesz is adorable.

Mrtraveler01: Some is still bitter about the end of Apartheid.

The end of apartheid brought to South Africa a horrendous wave of murders and other crimes, increased child mortality, a dramatic escalation in the number of police killings (believe it or not), crumbling infrastructure, the substitution of one form of institutionalized racism for another, and the exodus of almost a million of the country's citizens. I think it's fair to say that the end of apartheid was, at the very least, a mixed blessing for SA, at least if one is considering the matter rationally rather than emotionally.

Fair enough.

Oh, there is no argument that the ANC is corrupt and incompetent even by African standards, but Apartheid was a very unjust law.

That being said, there needs to be a competent alternative to ANC to turn South Africa around.

Rationally, you did slavery in the most half-assed way possible.  You deserved dissolution for genetic inferiority if nothing else.  Even Southerners did a better job with Jim Crow.  When Mississippians are better than you, your gene-pool is only worthy of setting on fire.  Leave governing to your betters - and at least the ANC knows how to do a good cleansing

You're thinking of his wife.

On the whole it was probably a good thing he was safely in prison for 30 years, so there was someone decent to run for office at the end of apartheid.

Winning a Nobel Prize must be the modern equivalent of receiving full absolution from a priest... it just makes your sins magically go away. It worked for Yasser Arafat as well.

Please tell us the "context" behind the Boston bombings, and why innocent Americans should have been murdered by the same people they generously admitted, educated, and fed.

Apartheid was going to end one way or another. Mandela and de Klerk did the best they could to avoid the other way: A brutal, awful civil war with no holds barred and no quarter given. South Africa is still a functioning democracy because apartheid ended in the legislature rather than in the streets. That it devolved into the mess it is today is due primarily to other factors--lingering institutional racism, difficulty in catching up the blacks who had been kept out of everything including basic education, getting caught in bad economic downturns--but it could have been much much worse. De Klerk knew that it was only a few more years before the blacks rose up and killed everyone when he released Mandela and acknowledged the ANC, and it's kept South Africa from becoming the delightful disaster of central Africa.

I'd rather see things go the way they're going than have allowed the inevitable civil war or a situation like Zimbabwe to have occurred.
