First step:  Have $1,000 in your bank account.

Those instructions are not particularly accurate.

First, you don't have to write out the full amount with "and no/100 cents" or whatever crap after it. For example, you can just write "one thousand". Same goes for the number, just put down the amount.

I place a line before and after the numbers in both places, e.g. "-1000-".

Also, you sign with your signature. It does not have to include your entire name as it appears on the check, although it definitely should be your signature.

What's a check?

2013-06-23 06:23:11 PM
When I "write a check", I go online to the bank's website, sign in, enter the payee, their address, and the amount, and click "Pay". Then the bank mails them a check.

/easy peasy

Most schools have removed the writing/penmanship portion of their curriculum just to prevent these types of conflicts later in life.

Anyone who needs practice can feel free to send me checks for a thousand dollars.  Just make sure there's at least a thousand dollars in your account.  If the money disappears from your account, you'll know it worked.

Relatively Obscure: If you didn't know, you probably shouldn't try.

It's scary that someone would need all of this mostly self-explanatory info.

I was expecting it to say that either "Fifteen hundred and no/100" or "One thousand five hundred and no/100" would be acceptable.

It's how-to articles like this that help confirm we are doomed as a race, as this generation of retarded, lazy, barely functional humans will set us back to the dark ages, with only small clots of intelligent people living in monasteries to keep record of what we were, until a new renaissance and age of enlightenment emerge to reclaim our birthright...

Probably. But it's probably not a mere coincidence that it's one year after GHWB's "this aggression will not stand" speech to Congress.

I remember being taught how to write a check in middle school when I was 13 when I took Home Economics. Didn't have to write a real one until I was 23. Still use em for rent, medical bills and paying freelancers for their services.

It would have made sense to learn that shiat in High School right when I was about to enter college instead of when I was even able to learn how to drive....

My grandson hates checks.  Can't figure them out to save his life.

So when I told him how the Student Union at college used to charge 10cents to cash a check they would then ask if you had a dime, and you would say "I think so" and dig through your pockets, find a dime and toss it across the counter, then they would cash your check and give you the money, but I once wrote a check to CASH for 10cents and handed it to the girl and she looked at the check and looked at me and said "Do you have a dime?" and I said "no" and I walked away.

He didn't get it.

/doesn't like run on sentences either, he was gone when I got to the "10cents" part.  "Who uses dimes?" he said

Anyone else notice the date on that check?  Why did the Coen brothers use that date?  What are the chances that they'd randomly pick 9/11/1991?  What did they know and when did they know it?

When I first started using a checking account, every check I wrote was written in a dark red ink from a pen I kept with my checkbook.  I only wrote checks at home, to pay bills.  When that pen ran out, I wrote a small batch of checks in black ink to entities I had not done business with before.

About two weeks later I get a call from my bank's fraud protection department.  Seems my red ink was so distinctive that my local bank found plain black suspicious.  They honored the checks only after I confirmed I had written them.

Back when checks were worth a damn, now fraud is so prevalent you practically have to write FRAUDULENT on the check to get them to notice.  I've heard (but not confirmed) that some folks have had voided checks cashed against their accounts, even though the check clearly had VOID written across it.

Meh. In case anyone is wondering most checks for under $10,000 never get reviewed unless there is a problem, so write numerical dollar amount correctly and the rest rarely matters. In the last year I've seen unsigned checks, checks where the alphabetical and numerical amounts did not correspond, and undated checks all clear without any questions.

I might take your word for it that that's official policy, but I suspect the truth is much worse.

The big banks, and most banks are big banks these days, are trying to get out of running small accounts -- which by their standards is anything fully insured by the FDIC.  The Baby Boomers don't like change and aren't going to die off anytime soon, so they've taken to deliberately being as incompetent as possible.  They WANT you to have all sorts of problems with your checking account.  They get all the capital they need through accounting tricks, and if that fails there's always the government to aim a money firehose at them.  You're not "sticking it to the man" if you leave your bank for a credit union; frankly it's a win-win.  Credit unions are much better at handling personal accounts and banks don't want your business.

Apparently, people thinking about buying a house are more in need of this advice, especially the "make sure you have funds in your bank account to cover it" part.

And so in such a brief span of time, maybe 10 or 15 years ago when many retail outlets accepted cash, cards and checks, we have forgotten how to write a large check?  While it is far from an everyday occurrence at least in my world, I have no problem writing out my checks to the IRS.  Yes I owe them, and it is better than a garnishment, but still....how could've everyone forgotten in such a short amount of time?  Checks are still necessary for a few things.  Can't believe there's an EHow on it.
