I saw this dude on a TV interview yesterday. He is seriously cool. He has a heavy accent too. A *Canadian* accent, eh?

The Mayor nearly all Canadians wish they had.

I really hate the asshats that think it's okay to go swimming/boating/rafting/ down the rivers creeks and tributaries after flooding rains.  You put rescue and first responders in danger, use up resources and are just generally creating a nuisance.

I dunno, we had some flooding down here in San Antonio a few weeks back, and, had I thought of this I would have done it instead of seeing it on the news.  I went to Trinity and this would've been epic for me.  I'm also scared of kayaking, so perhaps we have reached an impasse.

Sure it may be a raging river, but to paddlers that's as good as fresh powder is to a skier.

I can only imagine the amount of sweepers, strainers and log jams... I like whitewater, but flood level is beyond my abilities and enjoyment

2013-06-23 08:15:08 PM
Nenshi impresses me more and more.  The guy didn't sleep when the flood started.  Calgarians should be proud.

Now if we could do something about the asshat provincial politicians and the criminal federal politicians, I'd be happy.

Lets see: The powers out. Your flood plain home is stinking of moisture. Or your car is in the flooded parakade. But hey you can go and paddle over the flooded park while avoiding the currents in the main channel and live life without cowering in your own filth while on the phone biatching to the city to WAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

/I heard two or three people didn't even bother to use a canoe or kayak..... Whars the outrage there?
//R.I.P. people who did something to fall in the river saving their oh so precious somethings.

Bravo Two: JonnyG: Sure it may be a raging river, but to paddlers that's as good as fresh powder is to a skier.

Tell you what, I offer you a deal.   You can use flood waters to canoe/kayak on, but if we have to rescue you if you get in over your head you have to pay all costs associated with saving you, if someone else dies during the rescue or because resources were diverted from other places you will be charged with manslaughter, and if authorities say "fark it" and decide to leave you to your own devices your families can't sue the state over your death.

2013-06-23 08:30:07 PM
Mr. Mayor just let them go if they want and choose not to rescue them if it becomes necessary.

Easy enough.

2013-06-23 08:32:32 PM
The mayor is cool.  And I understand the stuff about emergency response.

But when there's a major urban snowfall, everybody applauds the dude who uses cross-country skis to get to work.

2013-06-23 08:34:28 PM
Nensh is my new hero.  BTW, Happy Birthday to the greatest of all heroes, Bruce Campbell.  I know it was yesterday, but I haven't been on FARK since.

Usually cross country skiers don't need rescuing after falling over in snow.

Bah I say if people want to go swimming boating or rafting in a disaster then let them.

no reason you have to help save their asses either mind you.

How do you 'close' a river?

The mayor is referring to people who had to be rescued from the river, because they decided that it was a good idea to venture out onto the raging, debris filled river. We are not talking about people who are rafting through their flooded neighborhoods in calm water

2013-06-23 08:47:02 PM
I love this city

2013-06-23 08:48:45 PM
Let them paddle.  Just make sure they know that there will be no rescue.

Really? A city with 3 million people has more to offer than a city with only 1 million. Whodathunk?

The Nensh is a hero. While corrupt mayors flourish in the east, ours is up constantly updating the city on the current state of the emergency.

He's been posting youtube vids of the ongoing situation on the calgary.ca website. He is awesome on twitter, too. The hero this city deserves.

You are welcome to Mayor McCrack... he hates public transportation, totally missed the point of the provincial upload on public housing, and has a complete disinterest in anyone poorer than he is...sounds like the man your looking for.

Same for asshat skiiers. Fark you for going out of bounds or avalanche risk areas and putting Search and Rescue in the position of risk. Oh, and pay their expenses dumbasses.
