I can't wait for this game to go live.  Wing Commander 2 and Strike Commander were two of my favorite games, and I can recall many hours spent as a kid really enjoying the gameplay mechanics and graphics.  If this is the spiritual successor, BRING IT ON!

As one of the biggest WC and Chris Roberts fan out there (I even paid good money for the movie) this game will rob me of at least a good hundred hours of my life.

/in the first hundred hours it's released.

I'm pretty sure that I can go a month without sleep. When this game comes out, we'll do an experiment.

I love that their treating these like actual advertisments. Something you'd see at a dealership.
Add the fact that they're self-publishing and crowdfunded (no publisher to rush it out the door unfinished) and I think it's going to be a hell of a game.

*they're treating...

/looks like the no sleep thing isn't gonna work.

I've heard of Star Citizen several times and I've briefly looked at their website. There are so many ships and purchase options that I'm a little overwhelmed. Can you earn all the ships in game or do you need to buy them?

2013-06-23 08:19:20 AM
Everything available for real $ can be purchased using ingame credits. EVERYTHING.
Ships, paint jobs, weapons, even cockpit decorations. There will not be an alternate currency like in world of tanks or anything like that.
Chris Roberts has said that he hates the pay-to-win model that a lot of games are using, he wants everyone to have the same experience available if they want it. If they want to take a shortcut and buy ships directly, that helps them with development costs, that's why they sell online.

I preordered at the $65 myself back when it first started, and got the 300i. This is the first I'm seeing of it. Very pleased.

/I also won an Anvil Bomber, no idea what it looks like.
//can't wait for the Hanger app to come out.

This game looks so good I'm trying not to let myself get hyped. Every other game that approaches this level of pre-release looking greatness always screws up somehow. I really hope this delivers on all aspects of its potential.

I don't know what I just clicked on and the comments so far aren't helping me. Is it some sort of a toy?

2013-06-23 08:34:35 AM
My god, that looked like it was filmed by the crew who produced the Battlestar Galactica reboot.  I'M SOLD, AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE HELL IT IS!

If it is what I think it could be, a new Wing Commander or Privateer type game.. well, I just shiat and wet myself, and I don't care.

*squeals like a little girl*

2013-06-23 08:39:13 AM
Did a google for Star Citizen.

http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/

Just wet myself again.  Holy Fark, I never thought I would see such a game ever again.  Online/Offline play, no subs.. oh shiat.

I... I...  I'm going to go sob tears of happiness now.

2013-06-23 08:39:35 AM
So glad I backed this game... the wait will be worth it.

It's a wing commander game in all but name. Remember Privateer? It's that, with online play.

/and I'm w/ you somemoron, it's been far too long for a game of this type.

Thank you for the information, I'm still in the dark but at least I know it's a video game now.
Never played the game you mention, I gave up a few years ago and when I was playing I was into stuff like Ico or Shenmue, slow games where not much happens but you feel like you're there...

Nah, its a really unfortunately named fictional company in the Star Citizen universe.  I know, I did the same skeptical look before recognizing the website's style.

Awesome, but 2017 release date?  That's after the apocalypse.

2013-06-23 10:08:41 AM
For some reason, I am not excited about this game. This seems like the type of game that I should be interested in. I love the space theme; I've played EVE Online a lot. I guess I just don't really understand how this game works. The whole online/offline thing confuses me (though I admit, I haven't watched any videos. I prefer to read). And, I'm skeptical about the microtransactions. Even though the developer says it's not pay-to-win, I get the feeling that somebody who is willing and able to pay real money will have an advantage.

It's named after Origin Systems, the developer that made the original Ultima and Wing Commander series.

Sadly, EA purchased origin systems back in '99 and proceded to ruin it (as they do with everything they purchase). The name is to honor the original development house.

late 2014 early 2015. but the dogfighting alpha is due later this year, and the full singleplayer missions are due early 2014.

It's more Xwing vs TieFighter, and less EVE:Spreadsheets.
the only advantage the real money players have is less time investment. Everything is purchasable w/ ingame credits.

Origin was the original publisher that Wing Commander, et. al., was published under. It's an homage.

So it's more of an FPS action game? Yeah, doesn't interest me. :-/

Garriot had a big party and burned the code for UO in effigy when EA shut down Origin systems.

Origin: We create worlds
EA: We buy them and strip every last bit of loot off of them like a Chinese hacker with  a stolen WoW account.

Even with the limited tech of the time one of the best, if not the best, game experiences I ever had was in a hellish mission I did in Wing Commander 2. I won just by the skin of my teeth and overcame impossible odds. And the thrill and emotions and memories of that fight have stuck with me all this time.

The game they're making looks gorgeous so suffice to say when I saw it was the Wing Commander guy making it I about wet myself. Add to that immersion and gameplay and book it, done. I'll be in sci-fi heaven.

I have my Star Citizen card... do you?

Hopefully the Oculus Rift HD is released by launch. :D

Yeah... when they get around to making the game instead of promos I'll be happier.

Until then the best 6D Shooter/Space Game out there is

http://star-conflict.com/

It's free.... it's also supported by Steam. And frankly, it's a hell of a lot of fun.

/just saying.

I think one of my friends got some of his pre-order stuff already this week.

I'm so hot for this game I want to get into a hottub with it and clumsily ask it to marry me after I divorce my wife.

Although the specs are a little weird. Ships seem incredibly light for their size.

those specs are for cargo capacity. they can carry that many tons in their holds.

I am looking at the mass, not the cargo capacity.

20 tons is very light for a shuttle.

The old orbiters, empty, weighed 68 tons.

The Orbiter/Space Shuttle is over twice the length of the Origin 300 series, and is built from 70's tech and materials. The Origin 300 series are one-man ships built out of futuristic materials, and their emphasis is on touring/exploration/dogfighting/racing. But it's cool that you look at the tech specs like that.

I got my Citizen's Card last week, I'm happy with my nice, low number. I am wondering what our Golden Tickets are going to get us, though.
